HOUGHTON -- Karl Herbert Houghton passed away in Mesa, AZ on Thursday, August 7, 2008. Karl was 96 years old and died from natural causes. He was born September 28, 1911 to Mabel and George Houghton in Salt Lake City, UT. Karl attended Oregon State University and UCLA, where he affiliated with Beta Theta Phi. Upon graduating from the University of Southern California School of Medicine, he joined the Army as a Second Lieutenant for further medical training. He married Virginia Adams in 1935, and a daughter, Judith Ann was born. The family was stationed in Manila when war with Japan became imminent. The women and children were evacuated to the United States. Karl stayed behind with the Army and in 1942 was captured on Bataan, participated in the Death March, and was imprisoned in POW camps for the duration of World War II. After the war, Capt. Houghton joined the Air Force, where he became involved with the Embassy in London and the Atomic Energy Commission. Upon retirement as a full Colonel, he went to work with McDonald Douglas as a medical advisor in the Areospace Program. His second wife, Dorothy, preceded him in death. His survivors include his daughter, Judith Jardine (Len) of Mesa, AZ; granddaughters, Pam Rheinschild (Rob) of Hailey, ID and Tracy Penkoff of Mesa, AZ; great -granddaughters, Jessie Penkoff and Royce Rheinschild. A Military Service will be held at the Santa Fe National Cemetery on Monday, October 6, 2008 at 11:30 a.m.

FRANKLIN -- Rev. Dr. Wallace Manning Franklin, D. Min. Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and "big papa", Wallace Manning Franklin went to be with his Precious Lord, Tuesday, January 15, 2008. He was born February 6, 1924 in Alhambra, California to Grace Ervema Chittenden Franklin and Wallace Clare Franklin, both preceding him in death. Also preceding him in death were his sisters, Edith Mae and Marye Grace. He is survived by a beautiful, loving wife of 62 years, Norma Lee Franklin; his two sons and their wives, Wallace Harold and Brenda, and Stanley Wayne and Annette Franklin. Wallace was also blessed with four grandchildren and their spouses, Melissa and Tom Padilla, Sheri and Andy Glanz, Mark Franklin and fiancee, Liza Jacquez, and Christina and Steve Jeter; and eight great-grandchildren, Chorus, William, Taylor, Katrina, Jack, Davin, Luke and Tommy. Wallace honorably served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Hutchins in the Pacific Theatre. On July 25, 1945, Wallace took a leave from the Navy and married his wife, Norma, in Albuquerque, New Mexico at Faith Tabernacle. After a brief stay in Oregon and California, Wallace and Norma returned to Albuquerque. In 1962, they started a storefront mission church at Five Points and Bridge and Wallace became an ordained minister with the Assemblies of God. The church was then moved to its present location on Sage and Coors in 1965 and built with Wallace's very own carpenter hands along with many dear friends. In 1968, they opened a child care center and school. In 1975, at the age of 51, he received his BA from the University of Albuquerque, in 1979, his Master's Degree from Pepperdine University, and in 1983 his Doctorate of Ministry from Trinity Theological Seminary. His love was in ministry and counseling. His huge heart never stopped reaching out even to the very last day. He touched every life he came in contact with and was loved by many. His impact in this community was great. He loved his family so dearly; and also loved bookstores and sneaking drinks of his wife's coffee. He will be missed so very much and will be waiting for us at those pearly gates. The viewing will be held from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. Friday, January 18, 2008 at Western Heights, 6415 Sage Road SW, Albuquerque, NM, 87121. Funeral Services will also be held at Western Heights on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. Pallbearers will be Orlando Segura, Tony Lovato, Carroll Brown, Clair Dutton, Albert Houghton and Dale Berglund. Immediately following the Funeral, the Burial Service will be held at Sunset Memorial, 924 Menaul Blvd., Albuquerque, NM, 87107. MERICLE -- Iris L. Mericle, 87, beloved and cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, went to be with our Lord on Saturday, August 11, 2007. Iris was born December 24, 1919 the daughter of Claude and Minnie Gerrish Pull in Kenosha, WI. The Mericle family moved to Albuquerque in 1947 from Zion, IL. Iris worked as an LPN for several years, then went to college at age 50 and earned her RN degree. She worked and retired from Presbyterian Hospital. Her passions in life were gardening and cooking. She was a kind and gentle person, loved and respected by all who knew her. She taught her family the meaning of unconditional love. Iris was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse, after 65 years of marriage; her parents, Claude and Minnie; and one granddaughter, Angie Mericle. She is survived by four children, Jerry and wife, Sue, Harry and wife, Yukie, Tim (loving caregiver), and Lynn Chirigos and husband, Dean; five grandchildren, Tim Chirigos, Tina Marcus, Vicky Houghton, Scott Mericle, and Tami Schaefer; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Arlene Gesell and husband, Elmer; three nieces, Sherry Binyon, Linda Anheirer, and Chris Anderson. THORNTON -- Allen L. Thornton, age 84, passed away on August 16, 2007 in Albuquerque, NM. He was born on June 8, 1923 to Frank and Magdalene Thornton in Grotton, SD. Allen grew up in Canada and served the United States Army Air Corp and after leaving the military met his wife, Joan in Minneapolis and they moved to Albuquerque and raised their family, retired from Sandia Laboratories Corporation. Allen is survived by his three children, Mary Thornton of Sandia Park, NM, Leigh Ludington and husband, Wayne, of Helper, UT, and Mark Thornton of Rio Rancho, NM; four grandchildren, Taber Yates and husband, Chris of Albuquerque, NM, Tracy Ludington of Portland, OR, Douglas Ludington and wife, Karla of Los Lunas, NM, Allen Ludington and wife, JoyAnne of Houghton, MI; four great-granddaughters, Alyssa, Hannah, Libby, and Emma; one sister, Dorothy Stiebel and her son, David of Ottawa, CA.
