BACA -- Eric Baca, 81, an Albuquerque resident born and raised in Barelas, finished his course on this earth early Wednesday morning, August 13, 2008. He was a friend to all, an indispensable help to many, a wonderful husband to his wife, Jessica, and the best father, grandfather, and great-grandfather ever. He lived a full and colorful life. He was an Albuquerque High Bulldog, Class of 1945. He was an Armed Services veteran, having served his country as a paratrooper during and after WWII. He attended UNM and Berkeley, graduating with a degree in accounting. He worked at the US Post Office, was the business manager and best friend of prize fighter Art "Golden Boy" Aragon, and he sold many native Albuquerqeans their first car at his lot on 4th Street in the '50's. He was very active in New Mexico's Democrat Party, helping many candidates into elected office (he was Hubert Humphrey's New Mexico presidential campaign manager in 1968), and loved being a businessman and investor. Eric is best known locally as the owner of "Eric Baca's Tax Service" and "BC Bail Bonds" (where Eric and partner Buddy Caire promised to "Get You Out Even If It Takes 10 Years!") downtown at 6th and Lomas NW. Eric had a much broader, less noticed ministry serving and helping anyone he came into contact with. He gave support to many needy individuals, ministers, ministries, orphanages, the local performing arts community, and was a member of the National Hispanic Cultural Center and many other local groups and organizations. In his business life, his social life, and his family life he treated everyone like they were very special, and that their needs were very important to him. He always had the answer to every situation, and the solution to anyone's problem. He loved God, his family, and his work. His wisdom, his "life-of-the-party" sense of humor, and his generosity will be missed by all of his family and his many friends. Eric is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jessica Baca; daughters Alexia Baca-Morgan and Claudia Baca-Moore and husband, Wyatt Moore; daughter-in-law, Joan Baca; grandchildren Leanna Archuleta, Shannon Schmidt, Marja and Johnny Morgan, Francesca and Carla Baca; and great-grandchildren Siara and Anthony Guzzio and Jeremy Schmidt. Eric is also survived by sisters Agnes Miera-Chavez and Margaret Romero, and by his brother, Desi Baca. ROBERTSON -- Vernon DeVere Robertson, 95, died August 9, 2008. He was born on a farm near Valley Falls, Kansas, on February 5, 1913, near one which his great-great-grandfather had purchased form the Osage Indians in 1856. His parents were Thomas Jefferson and Norah Maren Jones Robertson. Some of his fondest memories are of farm life which he experienced while visiting both his grandparents' farms. As a result of his father's wholesale poultry business, Vernon and his brother Howard moved to various towns in Missouri, Iowa, and Nebraska; then as teenagers the boys and their parents finally settled in Kansas City, Missouri. As a young man, Vernon learned the meat cutting trade which became the basis for his future. In 1933 he married Stella Louise Hester and together Kansas City became their home until 1950 when they opted to move to Albuquerque, largely for her health. Once here he worked for a number of grocery stores, either managing them or their meat departments until he opened the Meat Block, where he established a very loyal clientele. In 1970 he sold that business and retired. He and Stella then spent a great deal of time traveling in trailers or motor homes. Upon Stella's death in 1984, he married Marjorie Gehrke who likewise shared his love for traveling in the West, and the two of them then continued exploring national parks, their favorite always being Yellowstone. As a result of his marriage to Marjorie he gained two sons and their families, who embraced him with their love and kindness and provided him the opportunity to spend extended periods in both New Hampshire and New Zealand. Upon Marjorie's death, he moved into his son Bill's casita where he remained until his death. Survivors include his only son, Bill Robertson of Albuquerque; two stepsons, Alan Gehrke and wife, Marcia of Hampton, New Hampshire, Jerry Gehrke and wife, Liz of Hamilton, New Zealand; as well as four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
