ROSENBERG, LELA BUFORD Age 107, passed from our hands at 1:45 p.m., Monday, December 15, 2014. She was born April 12, 1907 in Barstow, Texas to Thomas and Laura West Williamson. As the oldest sibling growing up on Texas ranches close to the Rio Grande, it was not uncommon for her to hide her sisters under the bales of hay in the rafters of the barn while Poncho Villa raided the ranch. She was one of the first graduates of Sul Ross State University, Alpine, Texas, in addition to being one of the first women to hold a college degree. She met her husband, Samuel Rosenberg from the Bronx, New York, at Shiprock, New Mexico, and later served with him at Fort Apache on the White Mountain Reservation in Arizona. They were married in San Antonio by Judge John Onion on Christmas, 1938, and continued that celebration for 50 years until his death in 1987. She and Sam continued Indian education on the Hopi, Apache (White Mountain and Jicarilla), Pueblo and Navajo reservations. As a pioneering woman, Lela taught the Hopi Indian women to make their first mattresses from U.S. Government surplus war cotton. It was not uncommon for her to ride a horse and cross the rivers to reach an Indian Village when she was needed or even to deliver an Indian baby. Lela was awarded the United States Merit of Excellence Award from the Bureau of Indian Affairs for her teaching endeavors. She was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church, past president of Church Women United and used her lovely garden flowers for the Harwood Church sanctuary for 35 years. She was a determined horse rider, educator, explorer of New York and other far-flung outposts who drove and bowled until she was 95. Survivors are her daughter, Laura Henson of Yoakum; son, Louis Rosenberg and wife Sonia of Floresville; grandchildren, Sarah Rosenberg of Floresville and Joel Rosenberg and wife Amy of Cordova, TN; great-grandchildren, twins, Porter and Max Rosenberg; extended family and a host of friends. She is preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; and one brother. Little Joe passed away on a fittingly rainy day - a day great for fishing. He loved to hunt, fish, go camping, cruise his '54 Willys, and tremendously enjoyed the many gatherings with family and friends. He was an active carpet layer for over 50 years and passed on his skills to many, whose generations of journeymen continue today. The family would like to thank the staff at UNM Hospital and most notably those at cardiac therapy, the heart failure clinic, and Dr. Stack and her staff for the care he received over the last 14 years, helping him to live a full and active life. Little Joe will be buried with Esther in a private ceremony at Fairview Memorial Park and his life will be celebrated at his annual Matanza at the family home on Saturday, December 20 at 2 p.m. As he would always say, "Don't worry about me - carry on, carry on folks!" We love you Dad - life won't be the same without you, but we will live our lives to the fullest just as you did. Go Fishing!
