As the oldest sibling growing up on Texas ranches close to the Rio Grande, it was not uncommon for her to hide her sisters under the bales of hay in the rafters of the barn while Poncho Villa raided the ranch. She was one of the first graduates of Sul Ross State University, Alpine, Texas, in addition to being one of the first women to hold a college degree. She met her husband, Samuel Rosenberg from the Bronx, New York, at Shiprock, New Mexico, and later served with him at Fort Apache on the White Mountain Reservation in Arizona. She and Sam continued Indian education on the Hopi, Apache (White Mountain and Jicarilla), Pueblo and Navajo reservations. As a pioneering woman, Lela taught the Hopi Indian women to make their first mattresses from U.S. Government surplus war cotton. It was not uncommon for her to ride a horse and cross the rivers to reach an Indian Village when she was needed or even to deliver an Indian baby. Lela was awarded the United States Merit of Excellence Award from the Bureau of Indian Affairs for her teaching endeavors. She was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church, past president of Church Women United and used her lovely garden flowers for the Harwood Church sanctuary for 35 years. She was a determined horse rider, educator, explorer of New York and other far-flung outposts who drove and bowled until she was 95.
