Simpson -- Lily Mae"Johnnie" Simpson, 73, a resident of Rio Rancho and a lifetime resident of New Mexico, passed away on Sunday, October 31, 1999. Lily Mae Simpson was born November 26, 1925 the daughter of Robert Grant and Mable Sally Deathridge Foster in Raton, New Mexico."Johnnie" was preceded in death by her husband J.C."Jake" Simpson in 1994. She is survived by two daughters Patricia McClain and husband Gary and Ruby Caputo and husband Paul all of Rio Rancho; two brothers, Robert Foster, Jr. and wife, Spring of Oregon, James Foster and wife, Jackie of Albuquerque; one sister, Mary Louise McKeegan of Raton; six grandchildren, Sean, Morgan, Joseph, Annette, Jason and Lisa; four great-grandchildren, Bryant, Jake, Kayla and Eric; and her faithful companion, Foxy Dude."Jonnie" was one of the most humane and caring persons to ever walk the earth. She was much loved and will be deeply missed. The service for"Jonnie" will be tomorrow, Thursday, November 4, 1999, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Rd. at Meadowlark Ln., Rio Rancho, with the entombment to follow in Vista Verde Memorial Park. Byrne -- John P. Byrne, 84, a resident of Albuquerque since 1973, died Sunday, October 31, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Guri Byrne; daughters, Patricia Ann Leischner of Denver, CO, Guri K. Glass and husband, Wayne of Alexandria, VA, Bridget S. Turman and husband, Jerry of Chadron, NE; sons, James H. Byrne of Anchorage, AK, John W. Byrne of Albuquerque, and Timothy P. Byrne and wife, Geri of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Drew, Reeve, Barbara Jean, Matthew, Michael, Sage, Sarah, and Samantha. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Justin; and his sister, Jean Ann. Mr. Byrne served in the US Army for 27 years and was involved in WWII, as well as the Korean Conflict. Cremation has taken place. Private services will be held. French Mortuary, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE.

Kraus -- Mrs. Sarah G. Kraus, 84, a resident of Albuquerque for 53 years, passed away on Saturday, October 30, 1999. Mrs. Kraus is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, Robert (James) Kraus of Albuquerque; her son, Robert Kraus and wife, Judy of Albuquerque; her sister, Catherine Roberts of Washington, DC; her brother, Charles Garton and wife, Opal of Weston, WV; two sisters-in-law, Pat Garton and Jean Garton; many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Kraus was preceded in death by her two brothers, Thomas and Joseph Garton. Sarah was a devoted wife, mother and friend. She was a member of St. Edwins Church. Visitation will be Wednesday morning, from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m., in the St. Edwins Church, 2105 Barcelona SW, with a Rosary to be recited at 10:00 a.m. by Deacon J.O. Luna. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated following the Rosary on Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. by Father Jose Hernandez. Private disposition will take place. Powell -- James I. Powell, 84, a resident of Albuquerque for 82 years, passed away quietly Monday, November 1, 1999. Jim served in the US Navy during WWII as a Chief Electricians Mate. He owned J.I. Powell Company, Electrical Contractor, for over 30 years before retiring in 1979. Jim loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. He dearly loved and missed his late wife,"Bert". Jim and Bertha were happily married for 42 years before she passed away in 1992. His survivors include three daughters, Susan Bobbitt and husband, Bill of Irving, TX, Deb Stark and husband, Larry of Albuquerque, and Barbara West and husband, Joe of Albuquerque; four grandsons, James Bobbitt of Irving, TX, Chris Lovato of Los Angeles, CA, Daniel Castellano and wife, Maria and David Castellano and wife, Adonica, all of Albuquerque; one step-grandson, Joseph West of Albuquerque; three great-grandchildren, Daniel Castellano, Breeana Castellano and Joel Castellano, all of Albuquerque; brother-in-law, Lee Neighbors and son, Matt; sister-in-law, Lillian Klineline; dear friends, Al and Fran Jobe; lifelong friend, Charlie Hobson; and numerous friends from La Familiar Cafe. Covington -- James"JD" Covington, 70, a resident of Albuquerque since 1979, passed away on Wednesday, October 27, 1999. JD was born in Reidsville, North Carolina, the son of John and Madge Johnson Covington on May 9, 1929. JD enlisted in the Air Force in 1952 and reached the level of Full Colonel. During his 27 year career in the USAF, he was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Oak Leaf Cluster. In addition he received numerous Meritorious Service Medals. He was a member of the River Rats Association, an associate member of the local Fleet Reserve Association, and the UNM Lobo Club. JD was self-described"golf buff" and thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie of his many"golf buddies." He also derived great pleasure from his stained glass hobby, and in giving his works as gifts to family, friends and his church. Besides his wife, Marjorie, of 46 years, his survivors include his daughter, Diana Covington of Albuquerque; his brother, Robert Covington of Oak Island, NC; numerous nieces and nephews; and two very dear friends, Georgia McGuirt and Fola Williams of Monroe, NC. JD was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, whose members have provided such boundless love and concern for him and family throughout. A Memorial service will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 4, 1999 with Pastor Mick Erickson officiating. Interment will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. Military Honors will be presented by the Kirtland AFB Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church, 4301 Atrisco Dr. NW, Albuquerque, NM 87120. Arrangements by Vista Verde Mortuary, Rio Rancho.

Doak -- Rheba M. Doak, 88, of Kokomo, Indiana, died at 9:14 p.m. on Thursday, October 28, 1999, at St. Joseph Hospital in Kokomo, Indiana. She was born August 6, 1911 in Sims, Indiana, the daughter of Earl and Ida McLain Jarvis. She was a homemaker. She was married to John A. Doak, April 5, 1930 and he preceded her in death, July 7, 1984. She was a member of the Courtland Ave. Friends Church and the United Society of Friends Women. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Nancy Doak of Albuquerque, and Stanley and Kim Doak of Converse, IN; 11 grandchildren, William Doak, Jon Doak, Dinora Doak, Tom Doak, Julia Emery, Bradley Doak, Travis Doak, Amy Gardner, Seth Gardner, Alana Gardner, and Kevin Smith; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Helen Bond, and Ramon and James Slaughter; sister-in-law, Norma Jarvis; brother-in-law, Jim Bevens; and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, at the Courtland Ave. Friends Church with Pastor Kirk Harrison officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery. Campbell -- Herbert Maxwell"Max" Campbell passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 26, 1999, at the age of 83. His beloved wife, Martha, preceded Max in death. He is survived by his children, Judy and Chuck Stoughton, and Herb and Sue Campbell of Albuquerque, Susan and Al Badger of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and La Jolla, California; Jim and Peggy Campbell of Oceanside, California; grandchildren, Kristin Holliday, Kimberly Luevano, Sherry Green and Brett Campbell; and great grandchildren, Ashley, Keilah, James, Susannah, Lydia, and Sarah Holliday. Max was born in Elkins, West Virginia, on February 10, 1916. After graduating from Buchtel High School in Akron, Ohio, he attended Heidelburg College and then Ohio State University, where he was a member of the varsity football team and Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. In June of 1941, he was commissioned as a pilot in the Army Air Corps. After his marriage to Martha Burke, he reported to his first active duty assignment at Hickam Air Base in Honolulu, Hawaii. Max and Martha were present at the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and he was among the first pilots sent to begin counterattacks on the Japanese fleet. They remained in Hawaii until December of 1942, after which Max then served in the Air Force as a test pilot and ROTC instructor. Max completed his MA in political science at Columbia University in 1951 and taught at West Point Military Academy, as well as completing overseas assignments in the Pacific area until his retirement from the Air Force as Professor of Air Sciences at the University of New Mexico in 1961. He then served as Director of Career Services at the University of New Mexico until 1972. Max was proud of his selection as a lifetime member of the Albuquerque Chapter of Rotary International, where he had been a faithful member. He had also served as a deacon at the First Presbyterian Church. His children and grandchildren will remember his as a man who intensely loved his family and was devoted to his country. His grandchildren particularly remember his fascinating stories of World War II reconnaissance and his espionage tales as a CIA agent. A Memorial service will be held for Max at the First Presbyterian Chapel on Friday, Ocotober 29, at 10:00 a.m., after which he will be interred at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, next to his wife, Martha. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request that any contributions be made to the Sandia Hospice Foundation. The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Albuquerque Manor and Jennie Jones of Sandia Hospice for the immeasurable amount of comfort and care they gave to Max and the family.

Mason -- Edna L. Mason, 90, a resident of Albuquerque for 30 years, died Wednesday, October 27, 1999. Beloved mother and grandmother of daughter, Barbara Ofsthun of Seattle, WA; grandchildren, Jamie Ofsthun, Michael Ofsthun and Darren Ofsthun, all of Seattle, WA; great-grandchildren, Christina, Kevin and James; also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Franz; and brothers, Charles and Gale Mathias, all of Ohio. Mrs. Mason was a member of Montgomery Blvd. Church of Christ. She taught knitting for over 20 years. Cremation services were held at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University NE.
