New -- Rita S. New, 80, a resident of Albuquerque since 1956, died Monday, February 21, 2000. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Henry"Bill" New of Albuquerque; daughter, Rita A. New of Albuquerque; sons, James A. New and wife, Vickie of Bosque Farms and William A. New of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Nathan New, Sarah New, and Tyler New of Albuquerque; and Anita New and Amy New of Bosque Farms; and sister, Agnes Heasley and husband, George of Greensburg, PA. Mrs. New was a member of Holy Ghost Parish, where she was active in the Rosary Altar Society. She worked as a volunteer Teacher's Aide at Holy Ghost Catholic School. Pallas -- Joseph D. Pallas, 79, of South Paris, died Friday, February 18, 2000 at Market Square Health Care Center. He was born in Washington, DC on March 8, 1920, the son of James A. and Hattie V. Plummer Pallas. He was educated in Washington, DC schools. He proudly served in the U.S. Army in WWII in the Pacific and in Korea as an M/Sgt. Prior to his retirement in 1976 he spent 30 years under Civil Service in the Dept. of Environmental Services as an engineer in the city of Washington, DC. He resided in Myrtle Beach, SC for 16 years before moving to South Paris in 1996. He was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Myrtle Beach, SC and the Myrtle Beach Lodge No. 353, A.F. & A.M. He is survived by his wife, the former Irene R. Major of South Paris; one daughter, Anne and her husband, Stanley Lane of Albuquerque; one son, James Pallas of Concordia, MO; a granddaughter, Nicole Pallas of Greensboro, NE; and a grandson, Christopher Lane of Las Vegas, NV; two step-daughters, Carol Williams of Upper Marlboro, MC and Virginia Murphy of South Paris; a step-son, David Ragland of Virginia; three step-grandchildren, Chip Williams and Michelle Williams of MD and Carrie Hayden of Lewiston; one great-grandson; and three step-great-grandchildren; two nieces and two nephews of MD. He was predeceased by a brother, John; and a step-granddaughter, Laura Williams. Memorial services will be held on Monday, February 21, 2000 at 1:00 p.m., at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 45 Main St., South Paris, ME, with the Rev. Henry Male officiating. Public Masonic services will be held prior to the service.

Vigil -- Rosella"Sister" Vigil, 64, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Saturday, February 19, 2000, with her family at her side. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Isidro B. Vigil of Albuquerque; sons, Ben Vigil and wife, Yvonne and Gene Vigil and wife, Debbie, all of Albuquerque; daughters, Lynn Chick and husband, James of Espanola and Noretha Vigil and fiancé, Luis Jimenez of Albuquerque; ten grandchildren; sister, Iris Alford and husband, Al of Las Vegas, NV; brothers, Gilbert Apodaca of Albuquerque, Henry Apodaca and wife, Dolly of Belen and Alfred Apodaca and wife, Joyce of Brook Park, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews. Rosary will be recited Tuesday, 7:00 p.m., at San Jose Parish, 2401 Broadway Blvd. SE, with Alice Martinez, Teresa Sandoval and Vickie Bonnie reciting. Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, 10:00 a.m., at San Jose Parish. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Cognetto -- Tony J. Cognetto, age 46, and a resident of Albuquerque for 20 years, died Sunday, February 20, 2000, at home following an illness. Mr. Cognetto is survived by his wife, Susan Cognetto of Albuquerque; one daughter, Chris Cognetto of Albuquerque; one son, Vito Cognetto of Albuquerque; his mother, Jane Cognetto; father, Anthony Cognetto; two sisters, Terry Cognetto and Gina Emad; and one brother, Norman Cognetto, all of New York. Mr. Cognetto was the owner of Enchantment Electronics. Visitation will be held Monday, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a Rosary to follow at 7:00 p.m. in the Palm Chapel of Strong-Thorne Mortuary. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, February 22, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 412 Stover SW, with Fr. James Moore, Celebrant. Hayden -- Lt. Col. Curtis B. Hayden, U.S. Army Ret., 82, a resident of Albuquerque since 1973, died Friday, February 18, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Lucille Hayden of Albuquerque; sons, Robert Kurt Hayden of Clearwater, FL, Edward B. Hayden and wife, Alma Lynne of Myrtle Beach, SC, and John S. Hayden and wife, Melba of Orange Park, FL; daughters, Susan Baca and husband, Jude of Albuquerque and Linda Topmiller and husband, James also of Albuquerque; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Jude Baca, Jr. and granddaughter, Melissa Ann Baca. Services will be held Wednesday, 11:00 a.m., at Chester T. Herring -- John Andrew Herring, November 15, 1930 - February 17, 2000, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and avid sportsman and outdoorsman. He served in the United States Marine Corps in China during World War II and in the United States Army in the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts. After his retirement from the military, he was employed by the Bernalillo County Sheriffs Department for 22 years as Director of Administration and Finance. He held the Bachelors and Masters Degree in Public Administration from the University of New Mexico. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Nancy Herring; and three children, Lesa French and husband, Michael French of Las Vegas, NV, Morgan French, and Jonathan French and wife, Maurica French of Orlando, FL; and great-grandchildren, Eliana, Alia and Micah, Norvell Glynn Herring and wife, Sheila Herring of Raleigh, NC; children, Joseph Herring and wife, Derek Herring, Dylan and Ethan Herring, Laura Corey and husband, Myles Corey of Cape Cod, MA, Nathan Cobler and Joshua Fulcher of Cape Cod, MA. Hyler -- Lota Dean Hyler, age 91, passed away on February 16, 2000. Dean was born in Indiana to Ross and Bertha Thomas. The family moved to Pagosa Springs, CO in 1920, then to Albuquerque in 1927. Her husband, Glenn Hyler; first husband, Charlie Neal; and son, Charles Neal, preceded her in death. Also by her brothers, Aurbery M., Leslie R. and Bernie Thomas. She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Upham and husband, Don; son, Donald Neal and wife, Maryann; her brother, James P. Thomas and wife, Betty; and by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Dean was a true lady of the"old" school. She loved gardening, flowers and her family. She always had a kind and for everyone and a positive outlook on life. Dean will be missed by all that were lucky enough to know her. A private graveside service was held Saturday, February 19, 2000. King -- Eleanor Marietta King, the first Dean of the College of Nursing at UNM in Albuquerque, first Dean of the College of Nursing at Western State College in Danbury, Connecticut. Highly regarded in the fields of nursing education and public health. Born in St. Paul, MN on October 29, 1907, died in Albuquerque on February 16, 2000. She was the daughter of the late Prof. and Mrs. James Sherman King of Hamline University in St. Paul. She graduated from Hamline and later from the Yale University School of Nursing and studied further at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD. Dean King is the sister of Mildred King Walser and Edna King Vander Wagen of Albuquerque; the aunt of Stanley Penn, James Walser, and Mary Falzone, also several great nieces and nephews.
