CAMPBELL -- Jack McNiel Campbell died peacefully February 14, 2007. He was born October 17, 1916 in Ignacio, CO. The only child of Douglas H. and Verna McNiel Campbell, he moved to Albuquerque in 1924. He is a 1934 graduate of Albuquerque High. He attended the University of New Mexico and was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, and a graduate of LaSalle Business College. He married Alta Hunter of Mulberry, AR in 1941. Jack served his country as a decorated glider pilot in Europe during World War II. Before and after the war he worked for Standard Oil as a district manager out of Carlsbad, NM. In 1955 he returned to Albuquerque and began his +45-year career as a financial advisor / regional manager. Always the optimist and hard worker, his motto was "You were put on this Earth to work," which he did until age 82. Jack was a longtime Rotarian, Jester, Shriner, and Lobo Club member. Jack enjoyed fishing, reading, cheering for the Lobos, and morning walks through the Victory Hills and Ridgecrest neighborhoods. He was "Albuquerque's oldest paper-boy," tossing the delivered newspapers onto porches as he passed by. He is survived by his son, Richard Campbell and wife, Lorri; daughter, Debra Luther and husband, Dennis; daughter, Elizabeth Campbell; and grandchildren, Ryan and Mariaya Campbell, Mariaya Crawford, and Cody Luther. Jack's wife, Alta, preceded him in death in 1990. Services will be held Thursday, February 22, 2007, 3:00 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church, 215 Locust St. NE, reception immediately following. A private military honors ceremony will be held at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. DENHAM -- May Denham, 82, resident of Albuquerque, died on Saturday, February 10, 2007 at a local care facility. FIECHTL -- IRENE Irene was born March 31, 1928 and died February 2, 2007 at age 78. She is survived by many family members and friends who will remember her as a faithful servant of Jehovah God for 55 years. We will miss her laughter. FLEMING -- James Grant (Jim) Fleming, 47, died on February 13, 2007, in Albuquerque, due to cancer. Fleming was born in Kahului, Maui, Hawaii on November 28, 1959. His family moved to Brisbane, Australia in 1966, where Jim lived until moving back to the United States to attend university. Fleming received his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1982 and his masters and doctorate degrees from Stanford University, in materials science and engineering in 1984 and 1987, respectively. His thesis work concentrated on thermodynamic and kinetic studies of mercury cadmium telluride. During his graduate work he was an Office of Naval Research fellow. After graduation, Fleming was awarded an Alexander von Humboldt fellowship and worked at the Hahn-Meitner Institut in Berlin from 1986 to 1988. His work there involved solar energy conversion. In 1988, Fleming began working at Sandia National Laboratories where he was actively involved in micromachining process development, chemical vapor deposition processes, CMOS process integration, and 3-D photonic lattice design and fabrication. Fleming was the author or co-author of dozens of publications and held more than 20 patents. In 1998, the work undertaken in the area of photonic lattices was selected as one of the top 25 new technologies of the year by Industry Week magazine, which also identified Fleming as one of the 50 R&D stars to watch. His articles appeared in numerous academic journals, including Nature, and articles about his work appeared in several popular publications, such as Wired and the Wall Street Journal. He was promoted to Distinguished Member of Technical Staff in recognition of his many contributions at Sandia and was the recipient of two R&D 100 awards and a Lockheed Martin Nova award. Jim's interests included playing soccer and coaching youth soccer teams (in the AYSO and Duke City leagues), hiking, cycling, woodworking, and gardening. Jim is survived by his wife, Cearlwyn Fleming; his children, Jesse, Keila, and Brighid; his parents, John and Nancy Fleming; and his sister, Ann Fleming McMahon. A Memorial Service will be held at the Howard Johnson Inn, I-40 and Eubank Blvd., Albuquerque, at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 17, 2007. HERRERA -- ELOY C. Mr. Eloy C. Herrera, 85, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on February 15, 2007 peacefully at home with his loving family by his side and is now in heaven with our Lord. Mr. Herrera is the beloved husband to Mrs. Lina Herrera, married for 61 years. Mr. Herrera is also survived by his children, Dan Herrera and wife, Linda, Tony Herrera, Larry Herrera and wife, Mercy, Jimmy Herrera and Roseanne, Jane Archuleta, Renie Carmona and husband, Dominic; one brother, Ramon Herrera and wife, Grace; one sisters, Carolina Herrera and nine grandchildren. Mr. Herrera was a member of the Catholic Church and a Veteran of the U. S. Army serving in World War I I during the European Theater. Visitation for Mr. Herrera will be Monday evening in the Gabaldon Memorial Chapel from 6:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Final visitation will be Tuesday morning from 8:30 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. at St. Anne Catholic Church, 1400 Arenal SW, with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. by Father John Vigil. MORENO -- Melchor "Johnny" Moreno, 73, longtime resident of Albuquerque, passed away Wednesday, February 14, 2007 surrounded by his loved ones. NORDBERG -- Helen Bell Freeman Nordberg passed away February 10, 2007, in Fort Smith, AR. She was born November 29, 1918, in Harrison, AR, daughter of Charles Herbert and Birdie Lou Watkins Bell, where she grew up on the family farm. On December 5, 1936, Helen married George William Freeman of Seneca Falls, NY, a native of England. They became the parents of Dian and James David Freeman, and made their home in Ozark, AR. In 1952, Helen moved to Fort Smith, AR, where she worked as a dental assistant at Fort Chaffee until her marriage, July 21, 1959, to Dr. Harry Donald Nordberg of Salt Lake City, UT. In 1959, they moved to Albuquerque, NM, and established a dental practice in which Helen worked as assistant and office manager. She lived in Albuquerque until October of 2006, when she moved to Fort Smith, AR, to be with her family. She was preceded in death by her husbands; her parents; and by four brothers: Lex F. Bell, F. David Bell, Charles C. Bell, and Richard A. Bell, all of Harrison, AR; and by two sisters: Birdie J. Hickenbottom of Joplin, MO, and Hazel J. Collins of Modesto, CA. She is survived by her children, Dian Layman and David Freeman of Fort Smith, AR: five grandchildren, Mark and Matthew Freeman, Kevin, Brian, and Craig Layman; four great-grandchildren; and by three sisters, Lillian V. Parnell and Virginia C. Schneider of Kansas City, MO, and Celia G. Williams of Batesville, AR. In the 48 years she lived in Albuquerque, Helen made many friends and had many neighbors in whom she took great interest. She was always available in her neighborhood to provide practical nursing care for ailing neighbors, house-sit with pets, give gardening advice, and share the produce and flowers from her garden. Some of these neighbors and friends, in her later years, helped and took care of her, in the absence of her immediate family. Their kindnesses to her will never be forgotten by her family. ORONA -- Amalia "Molly" Orona, 88, a long-time resident of Albuquerque since 1940, died Saturday, February 10, 2007. She is survived by her children; John Orona and wife, Gloria, daughter-in-law, Irene Orona, Theresa Anderson; 11 grandchildren, Debra, Leslie, Steven Clifford, Sharon, Leonard, Mark, Felicia, Kenny, Rodney, Albert and James; ten great grandchildren, Bobby, Joshua, Matthew, Nicholas, Phillip, Benjamin, Steven Jr., Brianna, Joey, and Jeremy; three great-great grandchildren, Steven III, Jordan and Natlie Molly; two sisters; and numerous other relatives and friends. Molly was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Ann Anderson-Dixon; her son, Jim Orona; three sisters; and three brothers. PACHECO -- Augustine J. Pacheco, 94, a resident of Alameda, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 15, 2007 with his loving family at his side. He was dearly loved and will be forever missed. Augustine was born in Martineztown on February 28, 1912 and was a WWII Veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lydia; sons, Frank, Manuel, Tony, and Robert; and son-in-law, Michael A. Gutierrez. He is survived by his one and only daughter, Sandra B. Gutierrez; sons, Larry Pacheco and wife, Liz and Victor Pacheco and wife, Shelley of Olympia, WA; daughters-in-law, Lily Pacheco and Emily Olivares; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson; a brother, Ignacio Pacheco and wife, Laura; and a sister, Eloisa Montoya. ROBERTS -- Jamie K. Roberts, 49, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, passed away after a short illness on Wednesday, February 14, 2007. She is survived by her loving two daughters, five grandchildren, father, and life-long partner. Also surviving are her two brothers, nieces, nephews, and many special friends. May the sun never set on Jaime, loving daughter, mother, grandmother, and friend. She gave more of herself to everyone around her, before she thought of herself. THOMPSON -- W. Ragon Thompson M.D., a true southern gentleman, gardener, skier, and world traveler died on January 26, 2007 at the age of 71 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's. He was born on September 8, 1935 in Clarksville, Arkansas to Anna Augusta Ragon Thompson and Roger Leon "Buster" Thompson. His parents; his sister, Luanne Thompson; and his sister-in-law, Jan Thompson, preceded him in death. He is survived by his brother, Byron Alfred Thompson and niece, Anna Beth Thompson of Springdale, Arkansas; his aunt, Mary Johnson of Clarksville, Arkansas; his cousins, Kay Nevins of Searcy, Arkansas, Rosemary Dyke of Little Rock, Arkansas, Lee Ragon of Denver, Colorado; his adopted daughter, Madonna Stewart and her brothers and sisters and their families. He is also survived by his friend of thirty years, Charlotte Mary Toulouse, the extended Toulouse family, and his wonderful caregivers and friends, Ben Megah, Denise Corder, Victoria Secrest, Linda Heflin, Tiffany Megah, Geneva Megah and Heritage Hospice. At the age of 17 Dr. Thompson entered The University of the Ozarks in Clarksville. Upon earning his undergraduate degree in 1956 he went on to medical school at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock. After graduation from medical school he came to Albuquerque where he did an internship at the University of New Mexico Medical School. He completed a residency in 1968 at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock in Obstetrics and Gynecology, which became his specialty for the rest of his medical career. He served in the United States Air Force as a Captain from 1963 to 1965. In 1968 he returned to Albuquerque where he worked at Lovelace Clinic and in 1973 he entered private practice with his friend and colleague Scott Taylor M.D. until he retired from medicine in 1986. He then moved to Ouray, Colorado where he owned two art galleries and became an excellent picture framer. In 2002 he moved back to Albuquerque so he could be surrounded by loving friends who would help him through his final journey. A Memorial Service will be held at French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 17, 2006 with the The Rev. Geoffrey Butcher from Nashville, Tennessee officiating. He will be buried in the family plot in Clarksville, Arkansas. Donations in memory of Dr. Thompson can be made to two of the organizations where he gave not only of his money but his time, Planned Parenthood of New Mexico, 701 San Mateo NE, Albuquerque, NM 87108, or Second Chance Humane Society, PO Box 2096, Ridgway, CO 81432. If you were one of the hundreds of infants or the mother of one he delivered there will be a display at the mortuary where a picture of the babies as he first saw them and as the adults they have become can be placed anytime this week, during normal business hours, and prior to the service.
