Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Saturday February 17, 2007

Helen Bell Freeman Nordberg passed away February 10, 2007, in Fort Smith, AR. She was born November 29, 1918, in Harrison, AR, daughter of Charles Herbert and Birdie Lou Watkins Bell, where she grew up on the family farm. On December 5, 1936, Helen married George William Freeman of Seneca Falls, NY, a native of England. They became the parents of Dian and James David Freeman, and made their home in Ozark, AR. In 1952, Helen moved to Fort Smith, AR, where she worked as a dental assistant at Fort Chaffee until her marriage, July 21, 1959, to Dr. Harry Donald Nordberg of Salt Lake City, UT. In 1959, they moved to Albuquerque, NM, and established a dental practice in which Helen worked as assistant and office manager. She lived in Albuquerque until October of 2006, when she moved to Fort Smith, AR, to be with her family. She was preceded in death by her husbands; her parents; and by four brothers: Lex F. Bell, F. David Bell, Charles C. Bell, and Richard A. Bell, all of Harrison, AR; and by two sisters: Birdie J. Hickenbottom of Joplin, MO, and Hazel J. Collins of Modesto, CA. She is survived by her children, Dian Layman and David Freeman of Fort Smith, AR: five grandchildren, Mark and Matthew Freeman, Kevin, Brian, and Craig Layman; four great-grandchildren; and by three sisters, Lillian V. Parnell and Virginia C. Schneider of Kansas City, MO, and Celia G. Williams of Batesville, AR. In the 48 years she lived in Albuquerque, Helen made many friends and had many neighbors in whom she took great interest. She was always available in her neighborhood to provide practical nursing care for ailing neighbors, house-sit with pets, give gardening advice, and share the produce and flowers from her garden. Some of these neighbors and friends, in her later years, helped and took care of her, in the absence of her immediate family. Their kindnesses to her will never be forgotten by her family. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for donations to be sent to: Park Management Division, P.O. Box 21037, Attention Memorial Tree Program, Albuquerque, NM, 87154. Please mark donations "Helen B. Nordberg, Bench and/or Tree". Either or both will be placed in La Palomita Park.
