His family moved to Brisbane, Australia in 1966, where Jim lived until moving back to the United States to attend university. Fleming received his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1982 and his masters and doctorate degrees from Stanford University, in materials science and engineering in 1984 and 1987, respectively. His thesis work concentrated on thermodynamic and kinetic studies of mercury cadmium telluride. During his graduate work he was an Office of Naval Research fellow. After graduation, Fleming was awarded an Alexander von Humboldt fellowship and worked at the Hahn-Meitner Institut in Berlin from 1986 to 1988. His work there involved solar energy conversion. Fleming was the author or co-author of dozens of publications and held more than 20 patents. In 1998, the work undertaken in the area of photonic lattices was selected as one of the top 25 new technologies of the year by Industry Week magazine, which also identified Fleming as one of the 50 R&D stars to watch. His articles appeared in numerous academic journals, including Nature, and articles about his work appeared in several popular publications, such as Wired and the Wall Street Journal. He was promoted to Distinguished Member of Technical Staff in recognition of his many contributions at Sandia and was the recipient of two R&D 100 awards and a Lockheed Martin Nova award.
