ALONZO -- Jon Robert Alonzo died May 31, 2006. He is survived by his father, Fritz Alonzo; by his children: Tiffany, Christopher, Brittany, and Jonathon; and Jon's close friend, Leta Salazar of Chimayo. Jon is brother to Richard and his two sisters are Jacqueline and Marie Catherine. Jon will be remembered by his many relatives in Albuquerque and at Isleta and Laguna Pueblos. Other close relatives reside in Indiana and Kentucky. Jon was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping out; but he enjoyed most the simple things in life. His kind, gentle and mild manners will be greatly missed. Jon was preceded in death by his mother (on November 19, 2005). Jon helped with her care and feeding during the 11 years of her disability after her stroke. Jon kept her smiling with his wonderful sense of humor. Jon's Memorial Service will be June 24, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Queen of Angels Chapel, 12th and I-40. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the church.

ARNOLD -- Barbara Ann Griego-Arnold, 60, a resident of Chicago, passed away on Tuesday. She was preceded in death by her parents: Roy and Maria Griego. "Bobby" is survived by her husband, Angelo Arnold and three daughters: Angela, Maria, and Christina. She is also survived by sisters: Margaret (Carl) Hime; Judy (James) Contino; Elizabeth (Lloyd) Griego-Powell; brothers: Michael Griego, Robert (Rachel) Griego, and Anthony (Vivian) Griego. CHAVEZ -- John J. Chavez was born February 8, 1927. Our father, grandfather, uncle, friend, and beloved husband to Mela, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, June 21, 2006, to be with our Lord and Savior. He left us in the presence and in the loving arms of his son, John Michael, and his wife, Mela. John served his country in World War II, with honor. John joins his parents, Juan and Lucia; his siblings; his sister-in-law, Flora Vau; and grandson, John Michael Chavez Jr. John deeply loved his children and grandchildren, and he leaves behind his loving wife of 57 years, Mela; his sons, John Michael Sr. and wife, Diane, Stan, Ken and his wife Lorraine, Mark and his wife, Doretta; his grandchildren, Andrea Chavez, Lori Bottom, Darlene Martinez, Veronica Chavez, Gabrielle Chavez, and Giselle Chavez; his great-grandchildren, Naomi Jiron, Alyssa Martinez, Derryke Jiron, Martin Chavez, Orion Bottom, and Andre Martinez. FLOWERS -- WILLIAM V. Lt. Colonel William V. Flowers, USAF Retired, passed away Wednesday, June 21, 2006. He was a resident of New Mexico for approximately 25 years. He is survived by his wife, Edith Morgan Flowers of the family home; daughter, Tonya Cutler of Killeen, TX; step-son, Dr. Clifford O. Morgan, and wife, Elizabeth, of Los Lunas, NM; grandchildren, Cara Morgan of Mesa, AZ, Kayla Morgan of Los Lunas, Rand Morgan and wife, Marilee, of Rio Rancho, Jeffrey Lavelle, C.J. Gentry, and Taylor Cutler and husband, Charles, all of Killeen, TX; great-grandchildren, Emma Morgan of Rio Rancho and Shennon Morgan of Albuquerque; and nephew, Captain Alden Woolley. After high school, Bill attended Tulane University on a football scholarship, majoring in medicine. At that time he learned to fly an airplane and earned his Pilot's License. Therefore, when WWII was declared he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Bill was first stationed in England and made 46 combat missions over Germany in his beloved B-26 airplane. During his 27 and a half years of active military service he earned his Senior Pilot's rating flying cargo all over the world. Bill faithfully participated in three wars, WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He was a member of the WWII "Great Generation" that pulled America out of the depths of the depression, defeated Hitler, Mussolini, and Imperial Japan, and halted the expansion of Communism around the world. Bill was a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies of free Masonry. He received his 32 Scottish Rite Degree on November 3, 1963 in Paris, France. Bill became an avid golfer and after retirement he was a golf instructor at Lackland AFB. He established his own workshop repairing and making golf clubs. Bill was also an active sportsman in all kinds of sports, such as hunting and fishing. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, VFW, and American Legion. Bill enjoyed the fellowship he had with the Eastern Hills Baptist Church. Services will be held on Saturday, June 24, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at the Eastern Hills Baptist Church, 3100 Morris NE, with Pastor Larry Miller officiating. GASTON -- G. Irvin "Jeep" Gaston passed from this earth on the afternoon of Friday, June 16, 2006. Jeep is survived by his wife, Caroline, of 54 years; son, Richard; daughter, Annie; two grandsons, William, 3; and Matthew, 1. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Henry Gaston and Lydia Gaston; and three siblings, William, Patsy, and DeVera. Jeep was born on August 6, 1928, in Kansas City, KS. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1948. He earned his BA in Math Education from the University of Kansas in 1951, and he received his MA in Statistics from KU in 1952. For two years he served as a teacher of Mathematics and Science in the Etna, CA public schools. During four summers in the early fifties, Jeep worked as the Director of Youth Programs for the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, CO, where he and Caroline developed a love of the mountains, and made many lifelong friends. This experience also began his long-term career involvement with the YMCA. Jeep served as a YMCA Director first in Fort Worth, TX, from 1955 to 1970, then as the Executive Director of the Albuquerque YMCAs from 1970 to 1982. He next capitalized on his lifelong love of travel by starting his own travel service "Tour New Mexico" in 1983. From 1984 to 1994, he drew on fundraising skills he had developed at the YMCA, engaging in development work for non-profit organizations around the country with Jerold Panas and Associates. Throughout his life in Albuquerque, Jeep was an active Rotarian, embodying the group's mission: "Service Above Self." He was the songleader and played Santa for the club for many years. Jeep also led a Group Study Exchange trip for Rotary to Brazil. He served on the Albuquerque Academy Board of Trustees for a number of years. In his later years, Jeep took up painting, and he and Caroline enjoyed many international and domestic travel adventures together. Jeep loved to learn, read, hike, eat well, take photos, talk with people, tell stories, sing, laugh, and have fun. He lived life fully in this world, while knowing he lives finally in God's Kingdom. He loved his family and was beloved by his family, which includes many sons and daughters who adopted him. Jeep showed us what it means to serve the Lord. A Memorial Service will be held celebrating the God-blessed life of Jeep Gaston at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, on Friday, June 23, 2006, at 3:30 p.m. A reception will follow at the home of longtime friends of the family. GILL -- Herbert Gill, 81, a resident of Albuquerque passed from this life on Tuesday, June 20, 2006. He was born and raised in eastern Oklahoma. Gill was a decorated WWII Army veteran. He owned and operated Cimarron Trucking Co. until his retirement in 1986. Gill was an avid pilot and flew at every opportunity. Gill married Alberta Mae Hicks in Poteau, OK in 1948; she survives him. GROVE -- Alice May Grove, 71, died at her home on Wednesday, June 21, 2006. She was born in White Plains, NY on July 30, 1934 to Vernon N. and LaVerne (Purdy) Grove. Alice was self-employed in the restaurant industry. She was involved with the Sierra Vista Hospital Ladies Auxiliary; a volunteer at the meal site; a member of the former Community Theater; participated in the County and State Senior Olympics; a member of the Little Theater in Tuscon in 1981 and the Little Theater in T. or C. until 1997. She loved to travel. Alice was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Randall Schlemmer. She is survived by her husband, Vernon N. Grove of T. or C.; step-daughters, Robyn Inman and husband, Randy of Spring Branch, TX; Mary Ann Schalles and husband, Dennis of Picayune, MS; daughters, Nancy Beach of Vandalia, OH; Tracey Wolever and husband, Bret of Tucson, AZ; brother, Thomas L. Ward, Jr. of Tucson, AZ; sister, Laverne Ayers and husband, Robert of Kent, CT; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Cremation will take place. GUTIERREZ -- WILLIE J. Mr. Willie J. Gutierrez, 81, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on June 22, 2006 peacefully at home with his loving family by his side. Mr. Gutierrez is the beloved father to Mrs. Margie Casaus and husband, Jerry, He is also survived by three grandchildren, Deborah Yvette and husband, Milton, Jerry II, and Willie III; three great-grandchildren, Darrien, Rayren, and Jonathan; three brothers, Floribal Gutierrez, Chano Gutierrez and wife, Reyes, Felix Gutierrez and wife, Meme; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Gutierrez and a son, Willie Gutierrez II. Mr. Gutierrez was a member of the Catholic Church and a Veteran of the United States Army serving in World War II. PADILLA -- Linda Suzanne Padilla, 58, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 22, 2006 with her loving family at her side. Linda was born May 7, 1948 in Los Angeles, CA to Fredrick and Avis Wilson. Linda raised her two daughters in Monrovia, CA where she worked as an accountant. In 1995 Linda retired and moved to Rio Rancho, NM. Some of Linda's favorite pastimes included spending time with family and friends, reading, bargain shopping, and quilting. She is survived by her husband of 13 years, Ben J. Padilla of Albuquerque; two daughters, Suzanne Edwards and husband, Scott of Albuquerque, and Stephanie Trujillo and husband, Matt of Rio Rancho; and her three grandchildren, Sarah Edwards, Alyssa Trujillo, and Ethan Trujillo. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and dear friend, who will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know her. PARR -- Katherine Amelia Parr, age 71, beloved Mom, Grandmother, and friend passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Tuesday, June 20, 2006 of pancreatic cancer. She is survived by her ex-husband and best friend, Tom Parr of Albuquerque; and her daughters, Deb Werenko of Santa Fe, Liza Kerr and partner, Kerry of Albuquerque, Mary Sanchez and husband, Patrick of Las Cruces, Cyndi Vandi and husband, Mark of Los Lunas; and her son, Tom Parr of Albuquerque; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Kathy was a devoted mother, friend, mentor, and teacher to many. Kathy was born in Hollywood, CA, but moved to New Mexico when she was 15 years old. She graduated from St. Mary's High School where she met several life-long friends. She taught school for a total of thirty-four years at St. Charles Catholic School, Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School, and most recently at Washington Middle School where she retired two years ago. She will be deeply missed and remembered lovingly by her friends and family. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Presbyterian Hospice, especially Barbara Burchard and Dr. Lawson. Special thanks also goes to Jessica Kerr, her granddaughter, who showed complete devotion throughout her illness, and was an example to us all. SALISBURY -- Leola Elverda Simmons Salisbury, age 89 years, a former resident of Dailey and Valley Bend and for the last ten years, a resident of Mountain View Manor at Albuquerque, NM, went to be with the Lord Sunday, June 18, 2006. She was born on Wednesday, February 21, 1917, in Valley Head, WV, a daughter to Leroy Simmons and Jessie Phares Simmons. She grew up in Valley Head and Dailey and graduated from Belington High School. On August 26, 1948, she was married to Woodford Whitney Salisbury who preceded her in death on April 25, 1999. They had lived near Valley Head, WV, until moving to Oregon in 1960. After retirement, they moved to Valley Bend, WV in 1980. They moved to Buckley, WA, in 1985 and moved to Albuquerque, NM in 1997 where she attended Cross of Hope Lutheran Church. Before marriage, Leola worked at the Hillborn's Grocery Store in Valley Head, WV for eleven years. In Oregon, she worked at the Bumble Bee Fish Cannery in Astoria, OR for seventeen years. Surviving her is one son, Mark Salisbury and wife, Joan, Albuquerque, NM; one daughter, June Medearis and husband, Larry, Vancouver, WA; five grandchildren, Theresa Durbec and husband, Chad, Anitra Quist and husband, Jim, Luke, Jacob, and Anya; five great-grandchildren, Camille, Isaac, Zachariah, Whitney, and Olivia; one sister, Luella ("Pete") Losh; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Laola ("Bob"), Laila ("Bill"), and "Leota Lavelle ("Pooch"); and two brothers, Leroy ("Bud") and Loren. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Lohr and Barb Funeral Home of Elkins, WV. Final Rites will be conducted on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the Valley Head United Methodist Church. The Reverend William Sullivan will officiate and interment will follow in the Stalnaker Cemetery at Monterville, WV. THOMAS -- ROY Dr. Roy Thomas was a professor at the University of New Mexico's Department of Physics and Astronomy from 1948 to 1980. He passed away on March 18, 2005. Roy was born in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada on August 8, 1914 and he proudly maintained Canadian citizenship throughout his lifetime. His parents, who immigrated to Alberta, Canada from the Ukraine, were Nicolas and Kate Tomashewski. His father worked for the Canadian National Railroad. Roy graduated from Prince Rupert public schools and subsequently enrolled at the University of Alberta, where he received a B. S. in physics in 1938, receiving the Governor General's Gold Medal for attaining the highest scholastic average in his graduating class. He subsequently attended the University of California at Berkeley, on teaching fellowships, from 1938-1942, where he met his future wife, Evelyn. He obtained his Ph.D. in physics in Theoretical Physics in 1942. While at the University of California, he was a student of Professor J. Robert Oppenheimer. Roy's scholastic activities with Professor Oppenheimer are documented in the recently published book J. Robert Oppenheimer and the American Century (David C. Cassidy, Pi Press, New York, 2005). Roy became an instructor at Washington University, St. Louis, from 1942-1946, where part of his responsibilities included supervision of lecturers to Army and Air Force trainees. From 1946-1948, he was assistant professor of physics at St. Louis University. While at the University of New Mexico, Roy also gave numerous lectures and classes to other organizations in the state, including the Los Alamos Graduate Center, Kirtland Air Force Base, Sandia Corporation, and Highlands University. He was a colleague of the recently-deceased, former department chairman, Dr. Victor H. Regener. Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn and sister, Julia. He is survived by his brother, Victor; his daughter, Audrey; his four sons, Willard, Howard, Edward, and Vincent; and six granddaughters, Kari, Katie, Kelsey, Kira, Karin, and Kaela.

WINTERS -- Stephen (Steve) Alexander Winters, 65, died Wednesday, June 14, 2006. Steve was born July 8, 1940 at Loco Hills, NM, the second child of Lee and Mary Winters. His family moved to Artesia when he was one and then to Albuquerque when he was seven, where he lived for most of the next fifty-five years. After retiring from Sandia Labs in 1997, Steve bought a second home in T or C, NM and eventually moved there in 2002 to spend more time on his life long love; fiddling. Steve is survived by his wife of almost 47 years, Pearl Winters; his four children and their spouses, Leon and Doni Flores, Stephen and Angela Winters, Bonnie Winters, David and Mary Gower; and his six grandchildren, Jamie Foreman, Caesar Flores, Zayne Foreman, Christian Winters, Kayla Winters, and Alexis Winters. He is also survived by two sisters, Gay Garrison and Lenora Hagen; and one brother and sister-in-law, Howell and Vivian Winters. Steve was a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He taught us each about honesty, integrity and, most of all, love.
