BATTAT -- Aurora Mares Battat, 83, a resident of Albuquerque since 1977, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004. She is survived by her daughter, Anita Battat, of Albuquerque; sons, Kenneth Battat of Albuquerque and David Battat of Boston, MA; grandchildren, Thaddeus Jude Battat Beeley of Farmington, Margaret Summer Battat and Daniel Alexander Battat, both of Boston, MA; sisters, Carolina Hall and Eleanor Myers of Albuquerque, Celina Salazar and Elvira Archuleta both of Taos, NM, Tonita Negrette of San Francisco, CA; brothers, Belisandro Mares of Albuquerque, Orlando Mares of Belen, and Carlos Mares of Taos, NM. She was preceded in death by her sister, Flora Martinez and brothers, Andres Mares, Robert (Isaiah) Mares, and Eugene Mares. Aurora was born in the mountains of northern New Mexico in Blacklake on January 11, 1921 and moved to Taos while still a young girl. The sky, mountains, and people she grew up with shaped her view of life, which she kept until the end of her days. She married and moved to St. Louis, MO, then to Los Alamos, NM, in the late nineteen forties. She devoted her life in Los Alamos to raising her children and unselfishly supporting her husband, family and friends. It has been said that Los Alamos was a town where friends become family-everyone there was from somewhere else, a community of immigrants. She was fortunate to be geographically close to her family in Taos, and perhaps this is why she so successfully and continuously made strangers into friends and friends into family. She was a Charter member of Trinity on the Hill Episcopal Church, serving in many capacities, and always made time to help the less fortunate. She created and organized the Shop on the Corner, which clothed many needy Northern New Mexico residents. She moved to Albuquerque with her husband in 1977 and then to the Courtyard Dementia Unit at the Albuquerque Woodmark in 1999 where she spent her last years surrounded by family and strangers who became friends who became family who all remember her smile and voice and h er love for the earth and all its creatures. A memorial service will be held Friday, April 02, 2004, 3:30 p.m. French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd, 10500 Lomas Blvd NE with Lay Minister to the Holy Orders Randy Lutz officiating. She continued her membership and active participation in the Pi Beta Phi fraternity after college, and worked nearly every year with the chapter on campus at UNM, as well as with other pan-hellenic groups nationally. She was a long-time member of the Junior League of Albuquerque and served on many community boards. Carrie-Mae enjoyed being a wife and mother, reading, sewing, skiing, water skiing, and was an avid fan of college women's and men's basketball. CLINE -- Donald Cline, 83, a resident of Albuquerque since 1942, passed away on Sunday, March 28, 2004. He was born in Columbus, Ohio on November 9th, 1920, the youngest of seven children. As a teenager, he developed a serious lung condition and, after a number of years of unsuccessful treatment, his doctors told him that his only hope was to move to a drier climate. He left his family and friends back home and, having never seen so much as a picture postcard of Albuquerque, arrived here by train on his 22nd birthday. He checked into the YMCA across the street from the old Alvarado train station and started his new life. This new life turned out to be a series of fortunate circumstances, not the least of which was overcoming his lung condition. He eventually obtained employment at Stromberg's, a local men's clothing store. As he said many times, his most fortunate circumstance occurred in 1946 when he was introduced to his future wife, Dorothy Childers, by a mutual friend. They married September 29, 1947. He remained with Stromberg's for over thirty years where he retired as vice-president of the corporation. He was elected president of the Winrock Merchant's Association several times and was also on the board of directors of the Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce and Better Business Bureau and was a member of the 20/30 Club. He gave many of Albuquerque's current business leaders their first jobs and instilled in them the work ethic that had served him so well. While his tenure at Stromberg's allowed him to indulge his passion for the retail business and fine men's clothing, he was also equally passionate about American luxury automobiles. His close friends will truly understand the following line; He has owned over 75 cars and there was never a speck of dust on any of them. Through Stromberg's, his love of cars and his gregarious nature, he developed literally hundreds of friends, every one of whom would agree that he was genuinely thoughtful and caring and a man of unrivaled honesty, integrity, gener osity and humor. He will be sorely missed by all. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy, two sons, John and Jeffrey, and two granddaughters, Lindsey and Jamie Cline, all residents of Albuquerque. A Memorial Rosary will be recited Thursday, April 1, 2004, 5:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, with the Marianites reciting. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Friday, April 2, 2004, 8:30 a.m., at Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church, Claremont and Vermont St. NE, with Father Ronald Bruckner, Celebrant. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Lovelace Hospice, 5403 Gibson Blvd. SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108 or Casa Angelica 5629 Isleta Blvd SW, Albuquerque, NM 87105. GATEWOOD -- Ruth In Loving Memory of Ruth Rieb Gatewood April 17, 1917 - March 26, 2004 "Jesus, Mary and St. Joseph love you and so do I." Those were the words our dear Mother frequently imparted to us verbally or in ending a letter. It was her little way of gently reminding us of what is truly important in this life. Mother died as she lived, resigned to the Holy Will of God and persevering to the very last. Ruth was born in St. Francis, Kansas to Nina May Deal and Gustav Rieb. As a child, Ruth's family made their home in New Mexico. Ruth was a lifelong New Mexican with the exception of some years that were spent in Long Beach and San Diego. Ruth attended Albuquerque High School where she excelled in academics, music and basketball. She graduated in 1934 at the age of 16. She attended St. Joseph's School of Nursing. During that time, she met and married an intriguing and handsome man by the name of Art Gatewood. Together, Ruth and Art became the parents of six children. Their family included, Art Jr., and wife, Darlene, Gloria Ann Hultine, James Allen, Linda Haughey and husband, Chuck, Robert and wife, Frances, and Phillip and his wife, Kim. Mother loved her family very much and was especially thankful for all of her children; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Mother was preceded in death by her beloved sons, Jimmy and Artie; and sisters, Roma, Mildred and Margaret. Ruth was a dedicated wife and mother. Her love of God, family, friends and helping others meant everything to her. She was known for her vibrant personality, beautiful and engaging smile, her tenacity, self-discipline, compassion and love of others. The greatest gift she gave her family was in living her faith and teaching us to persevere. Our family is deeply grateful to the religious, family, friends, acquaintances, caregivers and others in the medical professions who so lovingly made a difference in her life. God bless you all. If she were able to, she would ask that you please continue to pray for her soul, as she will be praying for you. Jesus, Mary and St. Joseph love you Mama, and so do we.
