Obituary for BATTAT

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday April 01, 2004

Aurora Mares Battat, 83, a resident of Albuquerque since 1977, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004. She is survived by her daughter, Anita Battat, of Albuquerque; sons, Kenneth Battat of Albuquerque and David Battat of Boston, MA; grandchildren, Thaddeus Jude Battat Beeley of Farmington, Margaret Summer Battat and Daniel Alexander Battat, both of Boston, MA; sisters, Carolina Hall and Eleanor Myers of Albuquerque, Celina Salazar and Elvira Archuleta both of Taos, NM, Tonita Negrette of San Francisco, CA; brothers, Belisandro Mares of Albuquerque, Orlando Mares of Belen, and Carlos Mares of Taos, NM. She was preceded in death by her sister, Flora Martinez and brothers, Andres Mares, Robert (Isaiah) Mares, and Eugene Mares. Aurora was born in the mountains of northern New Mexico in Blacklake on January 11, 1921 and moved to Taos while still a young girl. The sky, mountains, and people she grew up with shaped her view of life, which she kept until the end of her days. She married and moved to St. Louis, MO, then to Los Alamos, NM, in the late nineteen forties. She devoted her life in Los Alamos to raising her children and unselfishly supporting her husband, family and friends. It has been said that Los Alamos was a town where friends become family-everyone there was from somewhere else, a community of immigrants. She was fortunate to be geographically close to her family in Taos, and perhaps this is why she so successfully and continuously made strangers into friends and friends into family. She was a Charter member of Trinity on the Hill Episcopal Church, serving in many capacities, and always made time to help the less fortunate. She created and organized the Shop on the Corner, which clothed many needy Northern New Mexico residents. She moved to Albuquerque with her husband in 1977 and then to the Courtyard Dementia Unit at the Albuquerque Woodmark in 1999 where she spent her last years surrounded by family and strangers who became friends who became family who all remember her smile and voice and h er love for the earth and all its creatures. A memorial service will be held Friday, April 02, 2004, 3:30 p.m. French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd, 10500 Lomas Blvd NE with Lay Minister to the Holy Orders Randy Lutz officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family invites contributions in her memory to Taos Christian Academy, 814 Witt Road, Taos, NM 87571. French Mortuary 10500 Lomas Blvd NE 275-3500
