Burrell -- John Anthony Burrell Sr., SMSGT USAF Ret., passed away July 25, 2003 at the Veterans Hospital in Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his wife Ann Marie and son Gary. Cardon -- Emilio B. Cardon, 68 a resident of Albuquerque since 1962 died Friday, July 25, 2003. Cohen -- Jane Mosbaugh Cohen died on July 25, 2003 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the age of 79. She was born on March 14, 1924 in Ponca City, Oklahoma to Carl F. and Eula Mosbaugh. After their untimely deaths, she was reared by her aunt and uncle, Jay C. and Willie Ruth Wood with their daughter, Frances. She was a member of the First Methodist Church and sang in the Youth Choir. She graduated from Ponca City High School in the class of 1942, and was active in the Orchestra and was a twirler in the band. She received an Associate in Arts Degree from Northern Oklahoma College and attended Oklahoma State University. She was married to Arthur Allen Stevenson in 1945. During their tenure in the Military Service, she was Chapel Organist at several Bases including ones in England and Guam, and also taught piano. At the time of his death in 1981, the were both Realtors in Northridge, CA. On May 24, 1985, she married Joseph Cohen, a retired Air Force Captain. For the past eleven years they have lived in Albuquerque. She is survived by her husband, Joseph Cohen, and her extended family, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Cohen, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sherwin, and six grandchildren. Other survivors include her cousin, Mrs. Frances Thompson of Ponca City, Oklahoma, and her son T. Jay Thompson; her nephew Ralph Stevenson of Albuquerque; her sisters-in-law, Mrs. Nila Stevenson and Mrs. Maxine Raulerson and her husband, Bill Raulerson, three nephews and one niece. Also surviving are three cousins in Nashville, Tennessee, Mr. Jack Odom, Mrs. Jennie Wright and Mrs. Emily Farmer. Cubbage -- Rufus A. Cub Cubbage, a resident of Albuquerque since 1990, died on Saturday, July 26, 2003. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Cubbage of Albuquerque; daughter-in-law, Sarah Cubbage of Albuquerque; and grandson, Jason Cubbage of Pusan, South Korea. Rufus honorably served his country in WWII. He retired from The District of Columbia Police Force. After retirement, he was a volunteer for the Prince George County School System in Maryland and was a member of the American Legion Gallegos Post 69 in Alameda. Hanke -- Marie Faith Hanke, 84, born August 15, 1918 in Sugar Grove, Illinois, passed away peacefully July 19, 2003. She is preceded in death by her husband, Harold Hanke; and her daughter, Sally Barrett. She was the beloved mother of Sue Godfrey, D'Lorah Gothard and her husband, Richard of Albuquerque, Starr Cousino and her husband, James of Phoenix, Arizona. She was the grandmother of 14; great- grandmother of 16; and great- great- grandmother of two. She was a resident of Albuquerque since 1958. She was a longtime member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and a member of the Heights Club. She retired from Lovelace Medical Center. She was loved and will be greatly missed by friends and family. Ikelman -- Leeta Mae Ikelman, 94, died Thursday, July 24, 2003 at the Enchantment Senior Home where she had been lovingly cared for since September 2002. Born Leeta Mae Garrett in 1908 in Indian Creek, TX, Leeta Mae experienced the birth of most of modern technology, but always cherished the simplicity of life. She loved to share stories of her life with her family, and meticulously chronicled her early life in photo albums. She married Edward S. Ikelman in 1941, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force, and spent years traveling the world with her husband and son. They came to Albuquerque in 1955. She continued exploring the world well into her 80's, once again chronicling her adventures in volumes of scrapbooks and photo albums. She is survived by her son, Kenneth Garrett Ikelman and wife, Sandy of Albuquerque; two grandsons, Stefan K. Ikelman of Dallas, TX and Daniel E. Ikelman of West Palm Beach, FL; and their mother, Margaret Cover of Bent, NM. Leeta Mae was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church where she enjoyed many longtime friendships with parishioners. Leeta Mae was a substitute teacher with APS for twenty-five years, as well as being a lecturer for Weight Watchers for over twenty-years. Lawrence -- Kathryn E. Lawrence, age 48, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2003 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Kate was a devoted daughter to her father, Saul Kaye, and loving mother to her daughter, Masha Alexandra Lawrence. Kate will be remembered as a gifted musician, a dedicated teacher and a passionate, vibrant life force. Kate touched and shaped the lives of all who knew her and she will be deeply missed by her family and many friends. Lopez -- Larry J. Lopez, age 46, and a former resident of Belen from 1970-1975, a resident of Silver City, New Mexico from 1976 - 2002 and most recently a resident of Las Cruces, died unexpectedly at his home in Las Cruces, New Mexico. An avid athlete and loving husband and father, Larry is survived by his wife, Margie of Las Cruces; parents, Joe and Rita Lopez of Belen; children, Andrea Quintana of Rio Rancho, Aaron and Eric Lopez of Las Cruces, Jeanette Hanson of Alamogordo, Ralph Rueda of Clovis; and five granddaughters. In addition, he is survived by one sister, JoAnn Erikson of Albuquerque. A homecoming celebration took place on Monday July 21, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Assembly of God Church in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Funeral arrangements are being handled through Graham Mortuary of Las Cruces, New Mexico. A fund for the family has been set up and can be mailed to First Assembly of God Church 1605 So. Valley Dr., Las Cruces, New Mexico. Whether on a basketball court or on the church pulpit leading his congregation in song, his spirit and memory will live with those who knew him and loved him long after his death. We are comforted by knowing the love Larry had for the Lord Jesus Christ was first and foremost in his life. Life is not measured by the breaths that we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. Cherish the moments.

Luna -- Rosa Luna, age 78, passed away July 25, 2003 following an illness. Rosa was born April 6, 1925 in Cabezon, NM to the home of Benigno and Romana Tachia Gonzales. She married Bonifacio Luna on September 20, 1947. Rosa worked as a waitress for various restaurants in Vaughn and she and her husband ran a Diner in Vaughn for over 10 years. She served on the Town Council of Vaughn. Rosa was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Vaughn where she was a member of the Sacred Heart Society. Rosa loved to quilt and watch her grandchildren play basketball. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bonifacio, her daughter Berna Perez, her sisters Devinia Valencia and Estefanita Armijo and her brother Ambrossio Gonzales. Survivors include her sons, Robert Luna and wife Stella of Vaughn and Joe Luna and wife Angela of Albuquerque, her son in law Victor Perez of Las Vegas, NM, her sister in laws Amy Luna Lucero and husband Bonifacio of Vaughn and Jeanne Luna of Santa Fe along with 7 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren numerous nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends. Rosary services will be held on Sunday evening July 27, at 7:00 from St. Mary's Church in Vaughn. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 28 at 10:00 am also from St. Mary's Parish in Vaughn with Father Hoi Tran officiating. Mccormick -- Edna Elizabeth (Mickey) McCormick, LCDR, MSC USNR, age 87, a resident of Albuquerque since 1985, died on Saturday, July 19, 2003 at the Manzano del Sol Health Care Center. She is survived by nieces, nephews and their extended families. Mickey was born March 12, 1916 in the state of Ohio and spent much of her youth in Washington state. She enlisted in the USNR (WR) on October 2, 1942 at Tacoma, Washington. She was commissioned ENS HC USNR in September, 1943, was released to inactive duty in 1945, recalled in October 1950 and retired May 1, 1968. She was a graduate of Bowling Green College in Ohio and a registered Medical Technologist with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. She served as a Blood Bank Specialist aboard the hospital ship USS Repose for 18 months during the Vietnam War. Her awards include the American Theater, WWII Victory, and National Defense Service (2- Korea-Vietnam) medals. She was a member of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish, the Waves National, the Franciscan Secular Order and the Franciscan Secular Institute of the Missionaries of the Kingship of Christ. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, July 29, 2003, 10:00 a.m., at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery Mausoleum, with Father Cecil Kleber, OFM, Celebrant. Mckinney -- Patrick McKinney M.D., 41, died on Sunday, July 20, 2003 while mountain biking near his home in Albuquerque. Dr. McKinney was the Medical Director of the New Mexico Poison & Drug Information Center and an Associate Professor both in the Department of Emergency Medicine and the College of Pharmacy at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. Dr. McKinney was graduated from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He completed his training with residency in Emergency Medicine at Truman Medical Center in Kansas City, and fellowship in Toxicology at the Rocky Mountain Poison Center in Denver. Recognized by his peers as an accomplished educator and scientist, he lectured nationally and internationally, garnering awards including the National Teaching Excellence Award from the American College of Emergency Physicians, and repeated awards by medical students and residents for his teaching at UNM, to name a few. He authored over 50 publications in his field. While his talents and professional contributions will be missed, his family and friends will especially remember his empathy for those in need, his honest humility and his rapier-like wit. Pat shared his enthusiasm and love for the natural world with his two adored sons, Samuel, 12, and Noah, 7; and cherished raising them with his wife, best friend and first love, Lisa. Mcspadden -- Nicolas McSpadden, age 4, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2003 following a long illness. Nicolas was born March 16, 1999 in Raleigh, NC, the son of Annette and Les McSpadden. Nicolas was a charming little boy who loved the horses and friends at J&H Stables and his classmates and teachers at Governor Morehead School. Rockhold -- Sarah Jane Rockhold, Born Feb 15, 1937 in Bryan, Ohio to Margaret"Peg" Crawford and H. Merrill Shaeffer went home on July 25,2003. Sarah was a community volunteer, and firearms activist, most recently testifying for concealed carry at the New Mexico Legislature. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother for both sons, team follower for Y AFL, and traveled many miles to cheer both sons while they participated in Belen High School sports. As a Benefactor Member of the National Rifle Association, she carried her interest in youth and gun safety forward by becoming the New Mexico Coordinator of the Eddie Eagle Gun Safety Program. During the last 10 years she brought the simple 4 point gun safety message ("Stop, Don't Touch, Leave the Area, and Tell an Adult") to almost 300,000 elementary age children in the state. Her favorite movie was"The Cowboys" starring John Wayne. She attended Ohio State University where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She subsequently graduated from the College of Santa Fe with a Bachelors Degree in Managerial Psychology and retired from Valley Improvement Association as Director of Safety and Security after 21 years. Earlier this month she and her husband Paul returned from a mission trip to Peru with Calvary Chapel of Rio Grande Valley where she assisted with Bible School in a jungle community. She is survived by her husband Paul of 46 years, sons Greg and wife Debbie, John and wife Judy, grandchildren Tiffany, Jennifer, Jordan, Zachary, and Trevor Rockhold (all of Albuquerque). Sprague -- Stephen John Eugene Sprague was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado on October 14, 1941 and died at home in Albuquerque on July 25, 2003 of complications from meningitis. Steve was preceded in death by his son Stryker Wonder and his father Marshall Sprague, a noted Western historian. He is survived by his mother, Edna Jane Ailes Sprague; his wife Jane Catherwood Sprague; his daughter Edna Frances Sprague; his brother Joseph Taylor Sprague and wife Linda B. Sprague; niece Susanna Jane Sprague; his sister Sharon H. Sprague and husband Bob Lee, all of Albuquerque. After graduation from The Lawrenceville School, Lawrenceville New Jersey, Steve received a B.A. from Colorado College, Colorado Springs Colorado in 1964, and a J.D. from the University of New Mexico Law School in 1967. As a lawyer, Steve was compassionately dedicated to his clients in all aspects of his legal work, be it public interest or private practice. He worked for New Mexico Legal Aid, Colorado Rural Legal Services, the NM Department of Health and Human Services - Children, Youth & Families, United Farm Worker's Union, to name a few, and at the time of his death, was a partner at the family law firm of Atkinson & Kelsey, PA. Steve was also instrumental in organizing the Inn of Courts & Albuquerque Arts Alliance. He was a member of the New Mexico Trial Lawyers Association and was licensed to practice law in the states of New Mexico and Colorado. Steve was a beekeeper, a hockey player, fly fisherman, tap dancer, and piano player. He practiced Tai Chi for 25 years, read Plato with his friends, and had a deep appreciation for art, poetry, music, and theatre. He was also active in his community - serving on several community boards and committees, including Serendipity Day School, Friends of the Rio Grande Nature Center, the Cesar Chavez Recuerdo Committee, the New Mexico & Albuquerque Mediation Associations and was a Vestry member at St Michael and All Angels Church in the North Valley. Steve had a great sense of humor, an inquisitive mind, a spiritual heart, and was adept in the art of rock & roll dancing. He loved life and the people around him - no matter their walk. Steve was a teacher and listener and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. The family wishes to thank everyone for their support during this time. Stribling -- Thomas Breece Stribling, Sr. 81, native of Albuquerque, died peacefully Saturday, July 19, 2003 at Presbyterian hospital. There are no services scheduled at this time. Tom will have a headstone at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Martha G. Stribling of Albuquerque; seven children, John D. Stribling, Martha Joy Stribling, Thomas B. Stribling Jr. and son, Luke Stribling, Margaret M. Stribling and her sons, Robert Caine and Sam Stribling, Steve R. Stribling his wife, Tammy Stribling and their sons, William Stribling and Marshall Stribling, George Stribling his wife, Teresa Stribling and there son, Levi Stribling, Joel D. Stribling his wife, Lori Stribling and their children, Joel Stribling II, Deanna Stribling, Rachel Stribling, Danielle Stribling and Martha Claire Stribling. Tom and Martha Stribling were married 63 years ago, he served in WWII and was awarded numerous medals and commendations along with the Purple Heart. After returning home from the war he founded Tom Stribling Associates Realtors with Martha at his side and sold homes to Albuquerque residents for 50 plus years. In the late eighties, Tom started work on a new endeavor, Supercuts, with the help of his wife and children. Tom loved the outdoors, landscapes and visiting with people. He was an avid hunter, camper and loved fishing with his family. Tom Stribling attended the University of New Mexico and later served as an English professor at the University. We will always feel the void left by the passing of Thomas Breece Stribling. He shall never be forgotten in our prayers.

Tavis -- C. Leon Leon Tavis, 59 of Tempe passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2003. Born October 27, 1943 in Hardtner, Kansas. His family moved to Mesa in 1957 and Leon graduated from Mesa High in 1961. He served in the Air Force from 1961-64. Leon lived and worked in the Albuquerque area for many years before returning to Arizona. Leon retired from IBM. He was preceded in death by his father Cleo R. Tavis, and survived by his wife Mary"Jay" Tavis; daughters, Leslie Ann Brown, and Kelly Jean Buechler; sons, Seth Andrew and Aaron Ray; grandchildren, David, Devin and Taylor. Thomason -- Celia"Jo" Thomason, 67, an Albuquerque resident of 45 years, passed away July 25, 2003. She struggled to recover after miraculously surviving an arterial hemorrhage in May. She is preceded in death by her father, Clarence Walker Failor. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Tom W. Thomason, mother Mary Springer Dotts of Honolulu, Hawaii, sister Jane Sage of Denver, Colorado, nieces Amy Vozar and Lisa Powell of Dallas, Texas. She will be deeply missed by her many close friends and co-workers. Jo was a tireless advocate for exceptional children and people with disabilities. With a Doctorate in Education and a Masters Degree from the University of New Mexico and Bachelors degree from the University of Minnesota, Jo dedicated 45 years to teaching special education in New Mexico classrooms and universities world-wide. She was a Special Education Administrator for the Albuquerque Public Schools from 1969 to 1986. She was the Executive Director of the International Council of Administrators of Special Education (CASE), and a world leader for the advocacy and education of special needs children. She was the leader of the CASE delegation to the then Soviet Union in 1991 and the Chairperson for the 1987-88 International Conference on Special Education held in the People's Republic of China. This was the first open, multi-national conference for special education held in the world with speakers from over 20 countries. She was the President of the Council for Exceptional Children 1981-1982. She consulted with public school systems, state departments of education, universities throughout the United States, the U.S. Department of Education, the Malagasy Republic, the Mental Health Project, NYC and the White House Conference on Handicapped (1978). She was adjunct professor at the University of New Mexico (1980-1997) and visiting faculty member at the University of British Columbia (1987) and presented at over 200 conferences, seminars and institutes in the United States, Canada, England, Wales, the People's Republic of China and the USSR. Jo's Honors include CASE Outstanding Contributor Award (2002- now named the Jo Thomason Award), CEC Outstanding Contributor (1993), NM CEC Award for Outstanding Leadership (named Jo Thomason Award since 1986), Washington State University Outstanding Service Award, New Mexico School Administrators Outstanding Leadership Award. The Special Education community will miss Dr. Jo Thomason's commitment and expertise. Jo was Chairperson of the Foster Grandparents Advisory Board and served on the Albuquerque YWCA Board. Proud to be a liberal democrat, Jo was also an avid traveler, gardener, cross-word puzzler, reader, cook and loved to spend time with her dogs and cats. She has been enjoying retirement from the Mountain Bell Telephone Company since 1982, where she was an accounting manager for 25 years. The way she lived her life with loved ones and friends is the only Memorial needed. Cremation has taken place at the Sunrise Society of New Mexico. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to her favorite charitable organization, the Ronald McDonald House at 1011 Yale Ne, Albuquerque, NM 87106.

Wintersberger -- Josef Wintersberger, 73, a resident of Albuquerque since 1971, died Tuesday, July 22, 2003. He is survived by his daughter, Carol Wintersberger of Albuquerque; son, Ralph Wintersberger of Tijeras, NM; sister, Elsa Jahrstorfer of Germany and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Wintersberger was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrud Wintersberger; sisters, Paula Knollmueller and Mariluise Wintersberger; and brothers, Otto Wintersberger and Franz Wintersberger. Josef was a machinist at Sandia Laboratory and retired in 1995. As a hobby he enjoyed woodworking in his spare time. While growing up as a young man he was a baker in Germany and in New York. Services will be held Monday, 11:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel with Deacon Bob Lewis officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Friends may visit French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, Sunday, 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be Clinton Wolf, Loren Montgomery, Roberter Koegler, Jr., Jim Brown, Edward Lujan, Karl Buttner, and honorary pallbearer, Doug Pridham.
