Baca -- Macedonio C. (M.C.) Baca, 87, a lifelong resident of Belen, passed on to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 7, 2000, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Our beloved father was born on September 13, 1912 in Belen to Eloisa and Alberto Baca. He was educated in Belen, a graduate of the 1st class of St. Mary School. He started out as a farmer along with his father and went on to become a successful businessman in the community. He was the founder of Baca Oil Co., Baca Auto Sales, Baca Chevrolet, Mt. View Motel, and Whiteway Cafe. He was a member of the original board of directors of Ranchers State Bank. M.C. retired in 198 and spent his remaining years gardening and visiting with his family. He was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church and he and his wife, Angelina served as Padrinos for Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church on two separate occasions. He was also a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus and the League of the Sacred Heart. M.C. was preceded in death by his loving wife, Angelina in 1996. M.C. is survived by his seven loving children, his four daughters, Mary Jane B. Sanchez and her husband, Joe, Elsie B. and Marty Sachs, Margaret Baca and her husband, Ned, Tina Baca and her husband, Mike; three sons, Ruben and his wife, Barbara, Leroy Baca and his wife, Sylvia, Mac Baca Jr. and his wife, Anita; his 25 loving grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren; his sister, Emily Moya; his two brothers-in-law, Juan Orona and Frank Orona; one sister-in-law, Melinda Orona. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., followed by a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. also at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the Parish Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, James Sanchez, Rodney Baca, Bobby Sachs, Paul, Mark, Michael, and Roberto Baca; and great-grandson, Ryan Espinosa. Honorary pallbearers will be his other grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his part-time caregiver and neighbor, Lorenzo Zamora. Candelaria -- Aurelia Candelaria, 93, died Sunday, May 7, 2000 in Albuquerque. She is survived by her sisters, Eugenia Gerhardt, Louisa Flores and Esther C. Tenorio, all of Albuquerque; brothers, Eurenio Candelaria and wife, Tive of Santa Rosa, CA, Rendolfo Candelaria and wife, Agatha of Amarillo, TX, and Maguin Chavez and wife, Ella of Albuquerque; and many other family, nieces and nephews. Aurelia was preceded in death by her parents, Esequiel and Sinfornia Candelaria; brothers, Fred and Bennie Candelaria; and sister, Eliza Chavez. She was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, as well as a member of the Sacred Heart. Aurelia was a former employee of Pioneer Wear. Critchfield -- Jean Critchfield passed away quietly on May 6, 2000 with family at her side. She and her husband, Charles came to Los Alamos in 1943 to participate in the Manhattan Project during World War II. She is survived by her four children, Lewis and wife, Lili, Robert, Barbara Chang and husband, Bill, Douglas and wife, Judy; eight grandchildren, Yasmin, Tanya, Elizabeth, Valerie, Heidi, Douglas, Lucas, and Jason; and three great grandchildren, Derek, LeAnne, and Kodi. Jean leaves behind many dear friends, including the congregations of both the Unitarian Church and United Church of Los Alamos, and her colleagues in the various clubs and volunteer organizations in which she was active. Her radiant smile, energy, curiosity, and enthusiasm will be sorely missed. These traits and her unfailing optimism and determination whether climbing the East Face of Long's Peak, Colorado or in meeting the challenges of growing old, will continue to be a guide and model for all who knew her. Farrow -- Fayebell T. Farrow, 81, homemaker and resident of Albuquerque, died May 6, 2000 at Sandia Care Center. She was born August 23, 1918 in Clovis to the parents of Claude T. and Muriel Allen Trimm. Faye's working years were spent at First National Bank in the 1940's, and later serving as Secretary-Treasurer at First Federal Savings and Loan in Clovis for 28 years. Service to others was a priority and she served two terms as President of the Pilot's Club in Clovis and held a district office as well. She also served as Coordinator for the Clovis Meals on Wheels program and delivered meals to shut-ins for many years. Faye was a charter member of Kingswood Methodist Church in Clovis, where she was very active, helping in the office and preparing the communion service for many years. She attended Central United Methodist Church in Albuquerque for nearly two years. She was a person of great love, energy and strength, and leaves a large void in the lives of those who loved her. Faye and her husband, George Alva Farrow lived in Belen for many years before moving to Clovis. More recently Faye had moved to Albuquerque to be near to her children. She will be remembered with much love as Mom. Grandmothering was her specialty and she spent many hours planning and enjoying outings and travel with her grandchildren and later her great-grandchildren. She will be loving remembered as Grandmommy. Faye was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Leo Trimm; and husband, George Alva Farrow. She is survived by her son, Dick Farrow and wife, Judy of Belen; daughter, Frances Boldt of Albuquerque; sisters, Clela Crawford and husband, Gordon of Bullhead City, AZ; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Services will be held on May 9, 2000, 10:00 a.m., at Kingswood United Methodist Church with Dr. Mark Scott officiating. Burial will be at Mission Garden of Memories. Fleming -- Judy Ann Fleming, 68, a resident of Albuquerque since 1977, died Sunday, May 8, 2000. She is survived by her husband, Uel E. (Gene) Fleming of Albuquerque; daughters, Jeannette D. Flattley and husband, George M. of Albuquerque, Elizabeth Kay Chapman and husband, Mike of Las Cruces, and Cynthia C. Haight and husband, Michael of Ft. Myers, FL; son, Gary G. Fleming and wife, Karen of Abington, MA; sister, Winnie Harvey and husband, Dan of Artesia; grandchildren, Jeremy and Becky Flattley of Albuquerque, Amanda Chapman of Las Cruces, Johnathan Grossman and Alex Fleming, both of Abington, MA; and nephews, Danny Harvey of Artesia and Tim Harvey of LaLuz, NM. Garcia -- Martha E. Garcia, 56, a longtime Vaughn, NM resident, died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque following an illness. Mrs. Garcia was born March 20, 1944 in Mosquero, NM to the home of Flugencio Baca and the former Monica Martinez. She was reared at Pastura and Vaughn, where she attended school. She married Luperto Garcia on June 9, 1969 in Santa Rosa. She was a member of St. Mary's Parish in Vaughn, NM. Martha was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Mike Baca in 1988; and an infant sister, Pauline Baca. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. Survivors include her husband, Luperto Garcia of the home in Vaughn; two sons, Jessie L. Garcia and fiancee, Venus of Albuquerque, Eric Garcia of Vaughn; two brothers, Benjy Baca and Abenacio Baca of Vaughn, and Helen B. Garcia of Tucumcari. Also surviving are two grandchildren, along with a host of other relatives and many friends. Rosary services will be held at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, from St. Mary's Parish in Vaughn. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from the church at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 11, 2000, with Father Patrick Duffy, Celebrant of the Mass. Gibanica -- Samuel Gibanica, 84, passed away May 6, 2000. He retired as an Army Lt. Colonel after serving his country for 30 years. He worked as an automotive salesman, receiving awards from Mercedes and Cadillac. He was a devoted husband, father and"Papa" who dearly loved his family. He is survived by wife of 69 years, Evelyn Gibanica; children, Diane G. Deflon-Ray and husband, James, Stephen C. Gibanica and wife, Judy; grandson, Eric C. Deflon; great-grandchildren, Brandon and Victoria Deflon; extended family and friends who loved and will miss him. Iglio -- Josephine Iglio, 93, a resident of Rio Rancho, residing at Acantilado Vista Retirement Community, passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2000. Josephine was born July 18, 1906, the daughter of Angelo and Josephine Leone Sgammato in Brooklyn, New York. She did hand sewing for a clother in New York before retiring. Josephine was preceded in death by her husband, Domenico in 1972. She is survived by four children, Tony Iglio and his wife, Arlene of Alameda, Charles Iglio and wife, Frances of Ozark, MO, Mechela Dicks of Virginia, Josephine Horton of Georgia; two brothers, Charles and Louis Sgammato of New York; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, May 9, 2000, from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with the Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Rd., at Meadowlark Ln., Rio Rancho, with the Mass of Christian Burial being celebrated on Wednesday, May 10, 2000, 10:30 a.m., at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Lathrop -- Jennie S. Lathrop passed away Sunday, May 7, 2000 at Lovelace Medical Center. She had been a resident of Albuquerque since 1952, residing in La Vida Llena Retirement Community since 1990. Jennie was born in Fayetteville, AR on July 21, 1912. She married Loyt Lathrop in 1933 while both were attending Kansas State College (now University) in Manhattan, KS. During WWII, Jennie served as a civilian employee of the Army Signal Corp. She first received her amateur radio operator's license in 1937 and was active as W5YSJ until 1988. During that time, she assisted with communications between their families and the scientists and military personnel stationed in Antarctica and Greenland. Jennie made her community better through her service as scout leader, school volunteer, church volunteer and volunteer for many other community activities. She is survived by her husband, Loyt Lathrop; her son, Kenneth; her daughter, Wendy Manzo; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Her infectious smile and cheerful attitude will be missed by all who knew her. A Memorial service will be held for her at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 10, at Carter Hall, La Vida Llena, 10501 Lagrima de Oro NE, with Rev. Norton Scrimshire and Rev. Jim Massey officiating. Maes -- J. Manuel Maes, age 86, a resident of Santa Cruz, passed away on Saturday, May 6, 2000, due to a lengthy illness. Mr. Maes was born in Alamosa, CO and received his elementary education there before moving to the Espanola Valley, where his grandparents lived. He graduated from Santa Cruz High School and received a BA degree from Adams State College in Alamosa. Mr. Maes was awarded an MA degree in Secondary School Administration from Highland's University in Las Vegas and did further graduate work at the University of New Mexico. Following his college work at Adams State, he began his teaching career at Santa Cruz High School when it was a Catholic Parochial School. He taught there two years before entering the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served four years in the European Theatre during World War II as a meteorologist. He later spent six months in Spain as a civilian, helping to establish air bases in that country. Upon returning to the states he resumed his 30 plus year career in education and administration. He taught further at Santa Cruz High and later became principal, as well as at John F. Kennedy and Cuba Junior High Schools until his retirement. He was loved by countless students and colleagues. He was a member of the National Education Association, The New Mexico Education Association, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Mr. Maes was a member of the Santa Cruz Holy Family Society. An avid sports enthusiast, he enjoyed baseball and basketball, and particularly ice skating. His other hobbies were masonry work and gardening. His mind was sharp to the end as he often recalled train rides on the Cumbres from Alamosa to Espanola, as well as many other experiences from his youth. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ramon and Carmelita Maez; his wife, Maria E. Maes; two sons, Bobby and Eugene Maes; and one brother, Guillermo Maes. He is survived by his children, Manuel R. Maes of Fairview, GA, Matthew and Alfred Maes, all of the home, Eddie Maes and wife, Edna of Pojoaque, Carmen Gonzales and husband, Rudy of Santa Cruz, Rev. Fr. Clarence Maes of St. Anne's Parish, Santa Fe, and Anthony Maes of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Damon Paul Maes (whom he raised), Chris R. Maes, Yvonne, Arthur and Jerome Quintana, Alicia Gonzales and Ramona Salazar; three great-grandchildren, Desiree Quintana, Benito Maestas Jr. and Raylynn Quintana and one due in May. Rosaries will be recited on Monday evening, 7:00 p.m., at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Espanola. A second Rosary will be recited on Tuesday, 5:00 p.m., at Santa Cruz de la Canada. Visitation will be at 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon, on Tuesday, May 9, 2000 at the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home. Maestas -- Joe Arthur Maestas, 70, born July 24, 1929 in Dixon, NM, he joined God May 6, 2000. He is survived by his loving wife, Taeko; daughters, Mary Jo Russell, Kathy Looney and husband, Joseph; grandchildren, Jennifer, Robyn, Mary Kate, Jake; sisters, Connie Griego, Lucy Sargent and husband, Chuck; brother, Rudy and wife, Eileen. He loved and was loved by many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, Godchildren and friends. He served 26 years in the Air Force, 18 years in Civil Service, an active member of Holy Ghost Parish, a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus, and a member of American Legion Post 49. Martinez -- Luther Frank Martinez Sr., 84, loving husband, father, and grandfather, and a resident of Albuquerque since 1933, died Saturday, May 6, 2000. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Cordelia Lily S. Martinez of the family home; sons, Luther F. Martinez Jr. and wife, Alice of Albuquerque, Lavern E. Martinez and wife, Francie of Denver, CO, LeRoy D. Martinez and wife, Ines of Mission Viejo, CA and Lemuel L. Martinez of Bernalillo; daughter, Linda G. Alvarado and husband, Robert of Denver, CO; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren; brother, David S. Martinez and wife, Virginia of Independence, MO; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives and friends. Mr. Martinez was preceded in death by his son, Lawrence L. Martinez. Mr. Martinez was employed by Sandia National Laboratories for 25 years and enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, auto mechanics, remodeling, and was a fan of the Colorado Rockies and the New Mexico Lobos. He was a WWII Army Veteran of the South Pacific, earning a Purple Heart. He was a Member/Deacon of Hoffmantown Baptist Church, East Mesa Civitans, and VFW Post #401. Martinez -- Mr. Pilar Martinez Jr., 64, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away peacefully at home in the arms of his loving family on May 7, 2000. Mr. Martinez was the beloved husband of 39 years to Mrs. Betty Martinez. He is also survived by three daughters, Louise Romero and husband, David, Yvette Martinez and Diane Martinez; one son, Gerald Anthony Martinez and wife, Rose; one sister, Fita Sanchez and husband, Eddie; two brothers, Phil Martinez and wife, Priscilla and Eppie Martinez; four grandchildren, Felicia, Savannah, Amanda and Bernadette; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mr. Martinez was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mathews -- Mr. Patrick Mathews died Sunday in Albuquerque at the age of 34. Patrick was born in Glenwood Springs, CO and had been a resident of Albuquerque for 20 years. He graduated from Rio Grande High School in 1983. He was preceded in death by his father, Pat Mathews; grandparents, Barney and Irene Romero; and brother, Gilbert Urban. Patrick is survived by his mother, Lorraine Aragon; brothers, Tom Urban and Russell Urban, all of Albuquerque; sisters, Charmaine Mathews and Christina Aragon of Denver, CO, LaVonne Urban of Norfolk, VA, and Renee, Patricia and Lisa Mathews of Glenwood Springs, CO; and caregiver, Randy Valdez. Funeral services for Patrick will be held on Wednesday at the Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church, where the Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Matlack -- George Miller Matlack, a Los Alamos resident for 51 years, died on Sunday, May 7, 2000. He was born June 14, 1921, in Pittsburgh, Penn., a twin son of Mildred Miller and Allyn Wolcott Matlack. He attended schools in Steubenville, Ohio, until 1935, when he and his brother, David, moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where they attended and graduated from East High School in 1939. George graduated from Grinnell College in 1943 with an A.B. degree, then earned a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the State University of Iowa in 1949. While at Grinnell he met Meredith Madsen; they married in 1943 and had four children. He joined the Iowa Geological Survey as principal chemist in 1943, and worked there until he entered graduate school in 1946. Upon completion of his Ph.D. in 1949, he joined the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory's Analytical Chemistry Group, where he remained until his retirement in 1990. He continued to work with that group as Senior Advisor until 1994. During his career at the laboratory, his contributions were focused on the measurement of actinide elements including plutonium, americium, uranium and other heavy radioactive elements. A recognized authority on plutonium, he served as leader of a project to measure plutonium-238 in heat sources for use in artificial hearts. He also participated in the design and testing of a device to measure the uranium content of large quantities of fuel elements, which he presented at a symposium sponsored by the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna. In recent years, he served as advisor for an archeological dig, working on detecting fossilized dinosaur bones by measuring their natural uranium content. He was a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemists and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Professional memberships included the American Chemical Society, American Nuclear Society, New York Academy of Sciences and Iowa Academy of Sciences. A longtime member of the United Church, George joined Trinity-on-the- Hill Episcopal Church in 1998. He was a Master Mason at Pajarito Lodge #66 AF&AM, and a member of Chapter #63, Order of Eastern Star. George took great pleasure in hiking, photography, fly fishing, fly tying, and all kinds of music. He was a member of The Four Fifths folk music group, Los Alamos Choral Society and Los Alamos Sinfonietta. His resonant baritone voice graced the United Church choir for many years. He also participated in Los Alamos Light Opera and the Don Juan Playhouse Group. A widely respected curmudgeon, he was known for his gentle ways of helping resolve difficult situations among people. Preceded in death by his youngest son, Allyn, he is survived by his beloved wife, Meredith; children, Nancy Williams of Logan, Utah, Christine Ward, Blooming Prairie, Minn., and Martin, Cedar Crest, New Mexico; his brother, David Wolcott Matlack of Los Angeles; grandchildren, Elisabeth, Johannah, Patrick, Anna, Jeremy and Nicholas; and great-grandchildren, Luke, Ruth, Ian, Kade and William Allyn. A Memorial service will be held at Trinity-on-the-Hill Episcopal Church on Friday, May 12th, at 11:00 a.m. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to Los Alamos Visiting Nurse Service Inc., 116 Central Park Square, Los Alamos, NM 87544.

Sandoval -- Mrs. Esther Sandoval died Saturday in Albuquerque at the age of 72. Mrs. Sandoval was preceded in death by her sister, Margarita Jaramillo. She is survived by her son, David Sandoval and wife, Maria; daughters, Mary Armijo and Jennie Charrette; brother, Joe J. Jaramillo; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral services for Mrs. Sandoval will be held on Wednesday at the San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church, where the Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Sandoval, Joe Jaramillo, Santino Armijo, Juan Gonzales, David Gallegos, David Leyva, David Cabrera and Orlando Gomez. Warchol -- Denise"Dee Dee" Warchol, 39, a resident of Albuquerque, died following surgery on Friday, May 5, 2000. She was born in Tucson and had lived in Albuquerque since 1997. She is survived by her husband of 11 years, Joe Warchol. He was her soul mate and best friend, just as she was his. She is also survived by sons, Evan Brown and Kristofer Mortensen and daughter, Alex Mortensen of Albuquerque; father, Dennis Mortensen of Tucson, AZ; brothers, Craig Mortensen and wife, Lynne of Phoenix, AZ, Michael Mortensen and wife, Susan, Ben Mortensen of Tucson, AZ;"adopted" sister, Anita Vasquez of Phoenix, AZ; four nieces and three nephews; uncle and aunt, James and Jeannine Nunez of Tucson, AZ. Dee Dee will be remembered as a loving, cherished and devoted wife, mother and friend. She was a gentle person and a friend to all whom she touched. She enjoyed being active in her children's lives. She loved flowers, quilting and sewing. Dee Dee left us very suddenly and unexpectedly, carried in the arms of angels and laid to rest in God's hands. A service celebrating her life will be held on Tuesday, May 9, 2000, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, with Pastor Rick Donaho officiating. Wolfe -- Bowyer Lee Wolfe, 74, longtime resident of Albuquerque, passed away on May 7, 2000. He is survived by his children, Randall, Lloyd, Kim, Bowyer Jr., Milo, Warren and James Wolfe, John Hubbell and Sandie Hubbell Nicodemus; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Bowyer served honorably in the Pacific Campaign during World War II. We thank God for the many year He gave us our father.
