Thomas -- Paul A. Thomas, 89, died Sunday of congestive heart failure at is home at Vista Del Rio in Albuquerque. Known to his friends ad Pat, he was a sociology professor at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, from 1946 until 1975. During his tenure at DePauw, Pat was actively involved in the civil rights movement and enjoyed playing the washboard with the Ducks of Dixieland, a small jazz combo. A 1932 graduate of Oberlin College, he was a Glen Gray scholar and quarterback of the college football team. Later, after serving in the Navy in World War II, he earned his Ph.D. at Indiana University. His wife, the former Margaret James Eaton, died in 1988. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Lucy and John Maret of Mohegan Lake, NY; son, Andy and daughter-in-law, Marit S. Tully of Albuquerque; son, Russell of Austin, TX; and two grandsons, John and Russell Maret. A private memorial service is planned, and Pat's name will be placed next to his wife's on a headstone in Marblehead, Ohio. Trujillo -- Barbara Trujillo, 58, a resident of Bernalillo passed away Tuesday in Albuquerque. She is preceded in death by her mom and dad. She is survived by her mother, Virginia Cordova, of Llanita, NM; her loving husband, Amado Trujillo; four sons, Gerald Trujillo and wife, Renee, stationed in Guam, Tim Trujillo and wife, Yolanda of Algodones, NM, Danny Trujillo and wife, Tina of Rio Rancho, NM, Robert Trujillo and wife, Jennifer of Rio Rancho, NM; two daughters, Emily Vasquez and husband, LeRoy of Bernalillo NM, and Monica Trujillo of Bernalillo NM. Also surviving are four brothers, Randolph Mirbal and wife, Marie of Bernalillo NM, Rey Mirbal and wife, Sandy of Las Cruces, NM, Pete Martinez of Bernalillo, NM, Jerry Martinez and wife, Norma of Placitas, NM; nine sisters, Bonnie Garcia and husband, Alex of Albuquerque, NM, Romie Marquez of Llanito, NM, Ruth Goltia and husband, Charlie of Tuscon, AZ, Helen Miller of Albuquerque, NM, Patty Espinosa and Richard of Corrales, NM, Tillie Tenorio and husband, Rudy of Bernalillo, NM, Angelina Schwerkoske and husband, John of Albuquerque, NM, Jeanette Lopez and husband, Jim of Belen, NM, and Lucy Valencia of Bernalillo NM. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren. She has several special brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, and many friends, cousins, nieces, and nephews. She enjoyed collecting and creating doll houses and pottery. She helped and never forgot anyone. She loved her grandchildren and always had time for them. She was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church where the Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 11:00 a.m. also at the Church. Interment will be at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Cemetery. pallbearers will be John Paul Trujillo, Joseph Garcia, Gabe Archibeque, Christopher Marquez, Jeffrey Tenorio, and Rick Moreno. Trujillo -- Martin S. Trujillo, born April 28, 1933, passed away on Sunday, December 26, 1999. He is survived by his sister, Tonu A. Sanchez and her husband, Richard; ten sons and daughters, and their spouses, Daniel and Ida Trujillo, Gerald and Teresa Trujillo, Debbie and Richard Hollingshead, Martin and Leticia Trujillo, David and Annabelle Trujillo, Karen Trujillo and Jesse Maestas, Jesus Trujillo, Carleen Trujillo, Martin Trujillo and Gilbert Trujillo; 26 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Memorial services are scheduled for Tuesday, December 28, 1999 at 7:00 p.m. and Wednesday, December 29, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. both at First Baptist Spanish Church, 2801 Belair NE, Albuquerque, NM. Cremation arrangements were by Sunrise Society of NM.

Upchurch -- Dorothea R. Upchurch, 86, a resident of Albuquerque since 1952, died Friday, December 24, 1999. She is survived by her sons, Ken Upchurch and wife, Sherron of Brookings, OR and Lannie Upchurch of Albuquerque; daughters, Judy Slayton and husband, Raymond, and Cathie Upchurch, both of Albuquerque; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; brothers George Baumback and wife, Shirley and Dick Baumback and wife, Cathy; and sisters, Helen Zeiss and Margaret Roetter. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Dewey Upchurch in 1992. Mrs. Upchurch was a longtime member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Services will be held Wednesday, 2:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, with Pastor Wayne Gaton officiating. Varoz -- Ruben T. Varoz, a resident of Rio Rancho passed away on December 26, 1999. Ruben was born on July 31, 1960 to Sarah and Amarante Varoz in Santa Monica, California. Ruben was employed as a customer service representative for Sprint PCS in Rio Rancho. He is survived by his loving parents, Sarah and Amarante, of Rio Rancho; brother, Edward and his wife, Margaret also of Rio Rancho; three sisters, Arlene and husband, Victor Alvarez of Albuquerque, Margaret and husband, Dave Verhaaf of California, and Leslie Varoz of Rio Rancho; nieces and nephews, Eddie, Adrian, Victor II, and Alysha. Ruben will be greatly missed by his family and friends. a Rosary will be recited this evening in the Chapel of Rio Rancho Funeral Home at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, December 30, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at St. John's Catholic Church in El Rito, New Mexico with The Rev. Pat Chavez as celebrant. Burial will take place immediately following the mass at Placitas in El Rito Cemetery. White -- Katherine (Kit) Mae White, 86, of Albuquerque, entered eternal life on Friday, December 17, 1999, at Manzano del Sol Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Albuquerque. She was born November 14, 1913 in Steubenville, Ohio to William T. and Carrie Whitehead Suplee. Kit is survived by her son, Ivan S. White of Las Cruces; and her sister, Betty Saylor of Phoenix, AZ. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, December 29, 1999 in Albuquerque from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a memorial service to be conducted starting 7:30 p.m. at Fitzgerald and Son Mortuary, 3113 Carlisle Blvd. NE. Alvarez -- Edward V. Alvarez, 88, died December 28, 1999 after a long illness. He was born August 4, 1911 to Edward and Rosa Alvarez in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He had a long professional career with the U.S. government serving as a procurement officer in Hawaii during the attack on Pearl Harbor, contract officer in Roswell, N.M. during the installation and update of the missile sights and during the installation of the Minute Man missile sight in Rapid City, South Dakota. His first wife Erma, brother Robert, Albert and sisters Ida and Judy and daughter Rose Marie Jackson and son Armando Garduno, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Carmen Alvarez, sons Edward Alvarez, Frank and Jesse Molinar. Daughters Jeanette Eads, Maria Elena Alvarez, Micah Alvarez and Jessica Eads. Grandchildren, Eddie, Tony and Gail Marie Alvarez, Magdalena and Carmen Sharpe, Tony, Christy and Stephanie Molinar, James and Jordan Eads, Ashley, Frank and Destiny Molinar. Services will be held at the Church of the Risen Savior at 1701 Wyoming NE, in Albuquerque. Rosary is Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. and funeral mass is Monday morning at 9 a.m.

Baca -- Mrs. Gregorita M. Baca went to be with the Lord Tuesday at the age of 59. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and was a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Baca is preceded in death by her husband, Alfred L. Baca; her parents; two brothers and four sisters. She is survived by her son, Lawrance Baca and fiancée, Andrea Maestas; sister, Josie M. Otero; loving grandchildren, Kristie Baca, Jackie Baca and Lawrance Maestas; and many nephews and nieces. Funeral Services for Mrs. Baca will be held on Friday at the St. Anne Catholic Church where the Mass willb e celebrated at 9:00 a.m. by Fr. Tom. Burial will follow at the San Jose de Armijo Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Alvin Sanchez, David Sanchez, Tony Otero, Frank Vigil, Mark Romero and Louie Gallegos. Honorary pallbearers will be John C. Baca, Mike C. Beattie -- James Winston Beattie, age 83, a three year resident of Albuquerque, died Sunday, December 26, 1999. He is survived by daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Liz) and husband, Thomas R. Mann of Albuquerque; granddaughter, Katherine E. Mann of Portland, Oregon; grandson, Michael J. Mann of Albuquerque; cousins in Canada and Great Britain, and treasured friends. He married Mary Lucille Asling on February 28, 1942. Mary predeceased James on September 7, 1991 after 49 years of marriage. James was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine. He served as a flight surgeon for the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. He established medical practices in Santa Rosa, NM, Las Vega, NM, Colorado Springs, CO, and Lake Geneva, WI. He was a member of the American College of Surgeons. After retirement his adventurous spirit took him to unusual, exotic, and sometimes dangerous places all over the world. He spent the last summer of his life learning to fly an ultralight plane. The family wishes to thank Dr. Vigil, Dr. Ortolano, and all the nurses and staff at Presbyterian Hospital, Presbyterian Pickard Convalescent Center, and Presbyterian Hospice. Cremation has taken place and Dr. Beattie requested that there be no services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vieques Humane Society, Vieques, Puerto Rico 00765.
