Obituary for Thomas

Paul A. Thomas, 89, died Sunday of congestive heart failure at is home at Vista Del Rio in Albuquerque. Known to his friends ad Pat, he was a sociology professor at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, from 1946 until 1975. During his tenure at DePauw, Pat was actively involved in the civil rights movement and enjoyed playing the washboard with the Ducks of Dixieland, a small jazz combo. A 1932 graduate of Oberlin College, he was a Glen Gray scholar and quarterback of the college football team. Later, after serving in the Navy in World War II, he earned his Ph.D. at Indiana University. His wife, the former Margaret James Eaton, died in 1988. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Lucy and John Maret of Mohegan Lake, NY; son, Andy and daughter-in-law, Marit S. Tully of Albuquerque; son, Russell of Austin, TX; and two grandsons, John and Russell Maret. A private memorial service is planned, and Pat's name will be placed next to his wife's on a headstone in Marblehead, Ohio.
