Sluga -- Joseph L. Sluga, 87, born in Sugarite, NM, and a resident of Albuquerque for 51 years, died Monday, October 4, 1999. He is survived by his sons, Donald L. Sluga and wife, Carolyn of Windsor, CO and Harold Sluga and wife, Kay of Espanola; brother, Frank Sluga of California; sister, Mary McKnight of Roswell; grandchildren, Shane Sluga and wife, Gena of Phoenix, AZ, Ronney Sluga and wife, Karen of Rio Rancho, and Tambra Nash and husband, John of Albuquerque; and great-grandchildren, Megan Sluga, Allison Sluga, Jeff Nash, and John Nash. Mr. Sluga was very knowledgable about northern New Mexico history and Indian Arts. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of the Cimmaron, NM Masonic Lodge, Elks Lodge in Albuquerque, and a 75 year member of the S.N.P.J. Services will be held Friday, 10:30 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University NE, with Rev. Larry Castillo-Wilson officiating. Eulogy will be presented by Ed Marinsek. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE. Pallbearers will be Shane Sluga, Ronney Sluga, John Nash, Clint Atwood, Gary Atwood and Mark Brozovich. Chavez -- Michael J. Chavez, 46, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on October 2, 1999. Michael is survived by his loving parents, Ramon and Candelaria Chavez; daughters, Bonnie and Erica; significant other, Cathy White; sisters, Connie Jaramillo and boyfriend, Paul Lujan, Ruth Ordonez, Rachel Chavez and significant other, Sergio Rivera, Marie Chavez and significant other, Jeff Page, Stella Gurule, Theresa Aguirre and husband, Ruben and Berna Chavez and husband, Larry; brothers, Raymond Chavez and wife, Susan, Lawrence Chavez and Anthony Chavez and wife, Beverly; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Michael was a member of the Catholic Church. A Rosary will be recited Tuesday evening, 7:00 p.m., at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 5415 Fortuna NW, with visitation at the church after 6:30 p.m. Gabriella Nieto reciting. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday morning, 9:00 a.m., at Holy Rosary Church with final viewing at the church after 8:30 a.m. Deacon Gene Tuma, Celebrant. Other surviving family members include his parents, Leo and Cecelia D'Amour of Albuquerque; his sister, Louise and husband, Larry Turner; brother, Greg and wife, Melanie; brother, Ralph and wife, June; and brother, Ronald. He is also survived by nieces and nephews, Kyle, Brent, Renee, Kelly, Cory, Vanessa, Dustin and Shane. A Rosary will be held on Friday, October 1st at 7:30 p.m. A Memorial Mass, in celebration of his life, will be held on Saturday, October 2nd at 10:30 a.m. Both services will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church (corner of Morningside and Lomas NE, Alb.) Maestas -- Jose Manuel"Melito" Maestas Jr., age 71, passed away September 28, 1999, at an Albuquerque hospital following an illness. Melito was born March 21, 1928 in Colonias, NM to the home of Manuel and Antonia Sanchez Maestas. He was reared and attended schools in Santa Rosa. He served in the United States Army from 1946 through 1948. He married Angela Dimas on April 21, 1952 in Santa Rosa. Melito served as Guadalupe County Clerk for four years, and served as the Postmaster for the Santa Rosa Post Office for 27 years, retiring in 1983. He served as a board member for the Santa Rosa Consolidated schools, and was a member of St. Rose of Lima Parish, where he was active in the adult choir. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council 5146, the VFW, and the American Legion. Melito enjoyed politics, the NFL, playing his harmonica, and cooking. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, and will truly be missed. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Pat Maestas; two sisters, Tonie Serrano and Mary Cordova; a brother, Alfred Maestas; and his mother-in-law, Mary Dimas. Survivors include his wife, Angela of the family home in Santa Rosa; his children, Connie Cave and husband, Dewey of Albuquerque, Michael Maestas and wife, Sylvia of Santa Rosa, Manny Maestas and wife, Cathy of Idaho Falls, ID, Jerry Maestas and wife, Veronica of Las Vegas, NM, Theresa Fresenius and husband, Steve of Seal Beach, CA, Larry Maestas of Albuquerque, Juanita Morales and husband, Victor of Laguna Negal, CA, Anita Hermann and husband, Ira of Seal Beach, CA, Tina Maestas and Victor Anaya of Albuquerque; two sisters, Ramona Gutierrez of Santa Rosa, Helen Cordova of Las Vegas, NV; a step-sister, Evelyn Carter of Albuquerque; and his step-mother, Celia Maestas of Albuquerque; his aunts, Aurora Sanchez and husband, Benny of Santa Fe and Emily Del Bagetto of Daly City, CA. Also surviving are 26 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends. Rosary services were conducted on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. from the Chavez Funeral Home Chapel. A second Rosary will be recited on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. from the St. Rose Church in Santa Rosa. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. also from St. Rose of Lima Church with Father Bill Sanchez officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot at St. Joseph Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are his grandsons, Jose Maestas, Allen Cave, Cameron Cave, Joseph Cave, Christopher Maestas and John Maestas. Padilla -- Vincent Padilla Sr., 68, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on September 30, 1999. Mr. Padilla is survived by two daughters, Mary Olivas and husband, Larry and Rita Silva and husband, Oscar; two sons, Vincent Padilla Jr. and wife, Jeanie, and Michel Padilla; five grandsons, Larry and wife, Monica, Randy and wife, Lynda, Mark and wife, Renee, Amarante (Monte) and wife, Kathy, and Anthony; five great-grandchildren, Jocob, Hayley, RaeAnn, Zachary and Joshua; two sisters, Helen LeBeau and Abelita Roybal and husband, Ernest; one brother, David Padilla; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mr. Padilla was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; and his parents, Felipe and Maria Padilla. Mr. Padilla was a member of the Catholic Church, Veteran of the Korean Conflict, and a member of the American Legion. Visitation will be Friday evening in the Church of the Ascension, 2150 Raymac SW, from 6:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. by the Legion of Mary. Final visitation will be Saturday morning in the church from 9:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m., with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. by Father Edmund Savilla. Interment will follow in the Los Padillas Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Randy Silva, Mark Olivas, Amarante (Monte) Olivas, Anthony Silva, Joseph LeBeau, and Leo Padilla. Collins -- Florence B. Collins, age 96, and a resident of Albuquerque for 43 years, died Sunday in a local nursing home. Mrs. Collins is survived by one daughter, Beverly J. Henting of Minnesota; three sons, Daniel J. Collins of Albuquerque, Harry E. Collins and his wife, Marie L. of Michigan, and Robert H. Collins and his wife, Jan of Minnesota; 18 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry E. Collins and one son, Donald J. Collins. Mrs. Collins was a member of the Lutheran Church and the Macabees. Viewing and visitation will be held Wednesday, September 29, 1999, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Ave. SE. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday in the Fern Chapel of Strong-Thorne Mortuary with Pastor Larry Pierson officiating.
