Navarre -- Billie Navarre, a colorful and prominent area rancher, passed away at age 81 at her Prewitt ranch home in the early morning of December 4, 1999. She came to McGaffey, New Mexico with her family when she was six years old. She was born on November 13, 1918 to Tex and Jo Hargus. She spent most of her adult life in McKinley County. She married Roy"Pistol" Navarre on April 13, 1936. They had been married almost 52 years when Mr. Navarre passed away in 1988. She is survived by her only daughter, Kay Navarre Latham and her husband, Bruce; grandson Brad Navarre Latham and his wife, Jean Ann; granddaughter, Kamey Latham Smith and her husband, Von; one great-great-granddaughter, Lindsey Latham; and her only sister, Mrs. Jack Cooper; two nieces, Mrs. Lee Carver and Mrs. Jon Meyers. Mrs. Navarre was well known for her colorful way of life and her western style hats. She was also a local historian, having written several articles on the early days in this area. She worked with the Forest Service on their research of the logging industry in McGaffey in the early 1900s. In recent years, poor health had kept her confined pretty much to her Prewitt home. And so far as her family and friends grieve and say our farewells, we find comfort in John 3:16, that"whosoever believeth in me shall have everlasting life." She was blessed in knowing where her final ride would take her. There will be a visitation at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Grants Mortuary Chapel and a wake service at 7:00 p.m. that evening. The Funeral will be held at the Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday with the Rev. George Brittain and the Rev. Don Poisson officiating.
