Montoya -- The family of Deacon Alfonso Montoya wishes to thank all their relatives and friends who were in attendance of the Rosary and Funeral services Deacon Alfonso. They would also like to express their gratitude for all the love, care and compassion that has been shown to them. Padilla -- Mrs. Adelina"Lina" Padilla, 58, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on December 15, 1999. Mrs. Padilla was the beloved wife of 36 years to Willie Padilla. She is also survived by her three sons, Alex, Jason and Adam; two sisters, Rosa Montoya and Patsy Chavez and husband, Tito; two brothers, Eugene Padilla and wife, Anna and Larry Padilla and wife, Alice; four grandchildren, Alexus, James, Jason and Dominique; two aunts, Ola Jennings and Luticia Archuleta; mother-in-law, Lucia Padilla; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mrs. Padilla was a member of the Catholic Church and a life member of the Altar Society. A Rosary will be recited by Tito and Patsy Chavez, Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 5415 Fortuna NW, with visitation at the church after 2:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, 11:00 a.m., at Holy Rosary Church with final viewing at the church from 10:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bernie Tapia, Frank Ware, Dwayne Romero, Eric Padilla, Richard Padilla and Eddie Padilla. Honorary will be Larry Padilla, Alfred Padilla and Rodney Padilla. Montoya -- Deacon Alfonso Montoya, a resident of Albuquerque, went to be with Our Lord on Tuesday, December 14, 1999. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Clorinda Saavedra Montoya; one son, Lawrence Mendoza and wife, Sandra of Albuquerque; three daughters, Cathy Castillo and Benny of Albuquerque, Eileen Garcia and husband, Ben of Los Alamos and Enedina Anabelle Miller and husband, Ben of Yorktown, VA; eight grandchildren, Brian Miller and wife, Heather, Senior Airman Jason Miller and wife, Felicia, Mark Zamora, Matthew and Nicholas Garcia, Clorinda Jo Torrez and husband, Gabriel, Lance Corporal Christopher Mendoza and Steven Mendoza; four great-grandchildren, Alex Miller, Dustin Miller, Dominik and Arianna Torrez; one brother, Orie Montoya and wife, Nellie; two sisters, Viola Ekdahl and husband, Bill and Genevieve Miller and husband, Robert; two sisters-in-law, Stella Giron and husband, Florian and Eloisa Montoya; one brother-in-law, Eliseo Saavedra and wife, Jennie; and several nieces, nephews and close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Octaviana Montoya and brothers, Alfred and Eugene Montoya. Deacon Montoya was born August 22, 1928 in Casa Colorada, New Mexico. He served in the U.S. Army and in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. He retired as a Master Sergeant from the New Mexico Army National Guard after 40 years of military service. He received numerous personal decorations and unit citations. He was a life member of the American Legion and a Third Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus. He had worked for the NM State Fair Security for several years. He retired as a Civil Service employee after 35 years. He was presently employed by ADC Limited Security. Deacon Montoya was a member of Sacred Heart Church and ordained Deacon on May 19, 1979. He served as Deacon at Sacred Heart Church for 20 years. He was a member of La Fraternidad de Nuestro Padre Jesus de Nazareno in Veguita, New Mexico. Deacon Montoya and his wife had been foster parents for 41 years to numerous children. Rosary for Deacon Alfonso will be on Thursday, December 16, 7:00 p.m., at Sacred Heart Church, 412 Stover Ave. SW, with visitation beginning at 6:00 p.m. Archbishop Sheehan will celebrate Mass at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, December 17 at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Brian Alfonso Miller, Jason Randolph Miller, Mark Patrick Zamora, Christopher Lawrence Mendoza, Steven Robert Mendoza, Gabriel Martin Torrez, and two of his Godsons, Patrick Anthony Giron and Gary Michael Montoya. Honorary pallbearers will be Los Hermanos de la Fraternidad de Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazereno. Hayes -- Joseph Paul Hayes died peacefully asleep in his home on Monday, December 6, 1999, due to heart failure related to diabetes. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on July 30, 1931. He was a graduate of Columbia University. He had been a licensed Physical Therapist and a pilot in the United States Air Force. He spent the latter half of his life in Albuquerque, where he owned a successful medical supply business and for the past nine years, served in the Public Service with the Social Security Administration. He is survived locally by his immediate family, his former spouse, Elaine; their son, Eric; and two daughters, Shannon and Kelly; as well as four grandchildren, Amanda and Katherine Hayes and David and Amber Rael; and many cherished personal friends. His surviving family member in New York include his brother, Richard and his wife, Alby; his brother-in-law, Charlie George; and nieces and nephew, all of whom he adored. Visitation will be held this Sunday, December 12 at Fitzgerald and Sons Mortuary, 3113 Carlisle NE, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Memorial services will be held Monday, December 13 in the Chapel of Fitzgerald & Sons, at 10:30 a.m., presided by the Reverend Myron White. Pallbearers will include John Dungan, Donald Rael, Loretta Montoya, Chrissy Salazar, Doug Smith and Dave Slocum. Baca -- Ben Baca, 33, a resident of Bernalillo, passed away Sunday, December 5, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Tasha Baca; his father, Juan Baca and wife, Bertha of Los Lunas; his mother, Viola Baca of Bernalillo; two sons, Dominic Valdez and Vicente Baca; one daughter, Francina Baca, all of Albuquerque; two brothers, Andy Baca and Juan E. Baca and wife, Jessica, both of Bernalillo; two sisters, Mary Arrellano and husband, Joel, Veronica Gurule and husband, Greg, both of Bernalillo. Also surviving are nieces, Ashley Arellano, Michele Gurule, Danielle Gurule; and nephews, Jerome Baca, Jesus Gurule, and Ricky Arellano; his special friends, Tony Riboni, Antionette Riboni, Brandon Hershey; and many uncles and aunts. Ben attended Bernalillo High School and also served in the Army National Guard. Ben also loved football and card collecting. He was a member of the Calvary Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted this morning at the Calvary Chapel of Albuquerque at 11:00 a.m. with interment to follow at the San Carlos Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Andy Baca, Juan E. Baca, Greg Gurule, Joe Arellano, Edward Gurule and Brandon Hershey. Honorary pallbearers will be Tony Riboni, Kevin Stewart, Roger Romero, Lawrence Montoya, Lorenzo Montoya and Monico Baca. Devargas -- Damiana DeVargas, 92, a resident of Rio Rancho, passed away on Sunday, December 6, 1999. Damiana was born April 15, 1907 in Vallecitos, New Mexico, the daughter of Jose A. and Reyecitas Martinez Gallegos. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dionicio DeVargas; a son, Querino DeVargas; and a sister, Estefanita DeVargas. Damiana is survived by her children, Arthur and Rosemary DeVargas of Albuquerque, Dana and Ray Montoya of Rio Rancho, Gail and Felix Gallegos of Antonito, CO, Rae Ann and Carlos Setein of Kansas City, MO, Fidel DeVargas of Salt Lake City, UT; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Damiana brought much love and joy to her family. We were all blessed with the time she shared with us and we will all miss her. The Rosary will be recited on Friday, December 10, 1999 at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Rd., at Meadowlark Ln., Rio Rancho. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 11, 1999 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Rio Rancho with the Rev. Msgr. Douglas Raun as the Celebrant. Interment will follow in Vista Verde Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Carlos DeVargas, Ray Ed Montoya, Michael Montoya, Gary Gallegos, Felix Gallegos Jr., and Shawn Lease.
