HERNANDEZ -- Tony "Googie" Hernandez, age 84, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away February 14, 2011. He was preceded in death by his mother, Faustina; and father, Jose Hernandez; four brothers, Tiburcio, Guadalupe, Catarino V. (Joe) and George Hernandez. Tony was retired from the city of Albuquerque Police Department after serving 32 1/2 years as a patrol officer. He started his employment with the police department in January 1951 and he retired in June 1983 as a sergeant. He was also employed by New Mexico Title Company from January 1984 to January 1990 and later he worked for French Mortuary from October 1990 to June 1995. Tony served in the US Army during World War II from March 1945 to November 1946 and he was honorably discharged as a Tech. 5. Tony is survived by his wife Ursinia DeLaO Hernandez of 59 years; one brother Ignacio Hernandez and his wife Mary; one son, Anthony Hernandez and his wife Geri; three daughters, Elizabeth Ernst and her husband Walt, Barbara Studerus and her husband Ted, and Victoria Apodaca and her husband Leo; nine grandchildren, Phillip Ernst, Michael Ernst, Angelina Maldonado, Teddy Studerus and girlfriend Stephanie Dineyazhe, Kassandra Studerus, Anthony Hernandez, Jessica Candelaria, Teresa Apodaca, and Xavier Apodaca; two Great-grandchildren, Isabella Maldonado and Mackenzie Ernst; three brothers-in-law, Frank DeLaO and wife Celia, Roger DeLaO and wife Rachael, and Albert DeLaO and wife Dorothy. The Rosary will be recited Thursday, February 17, 2011 at 7:00 p.m., in the St. Charles Borromero Catholic Church, 1818 Coal Place SE. The Mass will be celebrated Friday, February 18, 2011 at 10:00 a.m., in the St. Charles Borromero Church. Pallbearers will be Phillip Ernst, Michael Ernst, Angelina Maldonado, Teddy Studerus, Anthony Hernandez, Kassandra Studerus, Jessica Candelaria, Teresa Apodaca, Xavier Apodaca, Isabella Maldonado and Mackenzie Ernst; honorary pallbearers will be Frank DeLaO, Gerald DeLaO, Bennie Martinez, Mike Romero, Billy Zamora, Celso Montano and Tony Lovato. Interment will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. PELLEGRINO -- Nunziato (Nunzy) Pellegrino, passed away Saturday, January 29, 2011 at the age of 76 after he lost his battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife Priscilla; son, Michael Pellegrino; daughters, Terri Spence and husband Duane, Lisa Pellegrino and Larry Grimes, Wendi Pellegrino, Lara Sena, Antoinette Wallace and husband Dennis, Gayle Jaramillo and husband Luis; 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; surviving siblings, Michael Pellegrino, Lily Flamio and Marie Fitzpatrick of NY; and many more relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place; Services will be held February 3, 2011 Rosary at 9:30 a.m., with mass following at 10:00 a.m., at Santuario de San Martin de Porres Catholic church. VALENCIA -- Josie Valencia, age 91 beloved and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister was called to eternal life with the Lord on January 30th, 2011. Josie was born in San Luis, NM on September, 27th, 1919. Josie was a resident of Bernalillo, NM. She will be fondly remembered as a kind hearted, loving and caring woman who was adored by her entire family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years Mariano Valencia; her father Felix Lovato; and her mother Florinda Jaramillo; her brothers, Edumenio, Mel, Amarante and Solomon Lovato; She also was preceded in death by her son Mario Valencia, daughter Carla Valencia and grandsons, Grant Estrada and Gabriel Valencia. Josie is survived by her children JoAnna Matthews, Arthur Valencia and wife Georgina, Tommie Leyba, Joseph Valencia, Michael Valencia and Gloria Lovato, Elizabeth Valencia and daughter-in-law Christine Valencia. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and 11 great- great- grandchildren; and one on the way. She is also survived by her siblings Sylvia Reed and husband Pete, Dolores Olivas and husband Manuel, Rafaelita Taylor and husband Robert, Alex Lovato and wife Ruth and Reina Miera and husband Joe. She is also survived by sister in laws Tillie Tafoya, Betty Salas and husband Ralph and last surviving aunt Delfina Castillo. Her flight is a motion of freedom and calmness. And is so beautiful to see. Let death be a butterfly with our loving Grandma soring in an existence of liberty and beauty that is to wonderful for us to comprehend. A rosary will be recited on February 4, 2011 at 12:30 p.m., at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Bernalillo. Mass will be celebrated immediately following the Rosary at 1:00 p.m. Interment of her ashes will be in San Luis, NM at a later date.

PALACIOS -- Genevieve A. Palacios passed on at the age of 77 years old on Thursday, January 27, 2011 from a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Toby Palacios. She was a resident of Albuquerque for the past 18 years. She leaves behind one surviving brother, Raymond Alcantar of Patterson, CA; also five children, Sandra Addams of Hesperia, CA, Gary Palacios, Diane Garcia and Mark Palacios of Albuquerque and Cynthia Palacios of Fresno, CA; 18 grandchildren;13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Viewing will be Wednesday, February 2, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. followed by a Rosary at 6:00 p.m. at Riverside Funeral Home. Graveside Services will be held on Friday, February 4, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at MT. Calvary Cemetery.

BLACKBURN -- Ralph LeRoy Blackburn, 82 years of age, of Albuquerque, New Mexico went to be with his Lord and Saviour, Thursday, January 27, 2011. Ralph was born on September 18, 1928, in Bayard, Nebraska to George and Gertrude Blackburn. Ralph graduated from Bayard High School in 1946; and graduated from Northwestern Bible School Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1949 with a Major in Bible; obtained a B.S Degree from Hardin-Simmons University, Abilene, Texas in 1954 with Majors in Secondary Education, Speech, and Minors in Bible and English; and received a Masters Degree in Counseling and Guidance from Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 1967. Ralph served as a history teacher and counselor in the Battle Creek Public School System until he retired in May, 1990. Ralph also served as pastor of the Rice Creek Community Church in Albion, Michigan from 19971 to 1993. Ralph married Norma Lorraine Hughes on August 24, 1951; and to that union was born son David Ralph and daughter Lois Ann. They shared almost 50 years together in Battle Creek, Michigan; and Ralph cared for Norma who had Multiple Sclerosis with loving grace until she passed on January 18, 1999. He enjoyed bible studies, softball, fishing, gardening, and summer vacations including visits to western Nebraska to see family. Ralph married Karolyn Elizabeth Mosher on June 25, 2002; and joining his family were her four children and grandchildren. They were actively involved in the Sandia Baptist Church and the Young at Heart Choir. They also enjoyed traveling, entertaining friends and family in their beautiful home as well as numerous activities with their church family. He is survived by his wife, Karolyn; daughter Lois and husband Todd Pemberton, their daughter Danielle and son Benjamin of Florida; his stepchildren Danette, Samie, Jerry and wife Lynn, and Wendy, all from Albuquerque; seven grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. Ralph is also survived by sister Verna Korell; and brother Melvin Blackburn both of Nebraska; cousins; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his first wife Norma and son David. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 31, 2011 at the Sandia Baptist Church, Constitution Avenue. Ralph dedicated his life to the service of the Lord since he was 17, and he was considered a Christian warrior to those who knew him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an Animal Rescue facility.

HIRSCH -- Jo Dell Hirsch, 88, passed away January 18, 2011. Born Jo Dell Ruffner on July 16, 1922 in Wichita Falls, Texas. Married in 1942 to Albert Hirsch (deceased). Both were full time residents of Albuquerque since 1946. A loving wife and kind, caring, generous and patient mother of five: David (deceased) Charlene, Stanton, Glenna (deceased) and Lori. She was a special human being who knew how to listen and not judge; a woman who enjoyed the simple wonders of the universe; a person who stopped and smelled the roses. Also an avid reader and researcher who never stopped learning. Jo Dell was a contributor to many charities, and a member of numerous organizations. She will be fondly remembered and sorely missed in the hearts and minds of the many she touched. The Hirsch family would like to thank everyone who was part of her life, and all those who helped us thru her death. The funeral service was held on Friday January 21, 2011. Contributions can be made in her name to the Animal Humane New Mexico.

SANCHEZ -- Nestor Daniel Sanche, age 83, passed away on January 18, 2011 at his retirement home at Buckingham's Choice in Buckeystown, Maryland. Nestor was born on July 28, 1927 to Jim and Clara Sanchez. Born in Magdalena, New Mexico, he earned his bachelor's degree in political science from New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI), a master's degree in geopolitics from Georgetown University and was a graduate of the National War College. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1950 upon graduation from NMMI. In 1951, he joined the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) where he went on to serve with distinction in South Korea, Morocco, Guatemala, Venezuela, Colombia, Spain and various Headquarters assignments. While in Morocco, Nestor married his wife of 53 years, Joan Whitworth Russell. After 30 distinguished years of service as a senior representative of the CIA, Nestor was appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Inter-American Affairs in 1981 and was instrumental in forming U.S. policy in Latin America. He retired from federal service in 1987 and was awarded the Department of Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service and the President's Award for Distinguished Federal Civilian Service. While living in Leesburg, Nestor served as the Executive Vice President of the George C. Marshall Home Preservation Fund where he secured funding vital to keeping the home as a museum for the public. A devoted and loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Nestor is survived by his two sisters; four sons; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Joan. Nestor touched many people with his hard work, humor, dedication, and wise counsel. He will be greatly missed. Services will be held in Buckingham's Choice, Buckeystown, MD on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at 2:00 p.m.
