MATWIYOFF, NICHOLAS ALEXANDER August, 1937- February, 2015 Beloved husband and father, devoted grandfather and father-in-law, eminent scientist, superb raconteur and conversationalist, and good friend and colleague, Nick quietly passed at home on Saturday, February 21, 2015. His boyhood was spent in Rogers City, MI. He earned his BS in chemistry from Michigan Technological University in 1959 & received his MS/Ph.D. at University of Illinois, Champagne/ Urbana graduating in 1962. He and Janet Hogberg Matwiyoff married that same year and went to Stanford University, for a year of Post-Doctoral studies, then joined the Penn State chemistry faculty for five years, mentoring many graduate students and publishing widely in nuclear magnetic resonance and spectroscopy. Summers were spent consulting at Los Alamos National Labs and in 1968, he accepted a position at CNC division at LANL, eventually moving into life sciences for studies and applications for magnetic resonance. In those years he and his family lived in Santa Fe, making many friends there. He was asked by Gov. Bruce King's Science Advisor and innovator to help set up NM Centers for Technical Excellence around the state. He was most influential in establishing the UNM Medical School's Center for Non-invasive Diagnosis in 1981 (now The Mind Research Network) using one of the earliest and largest magnets for what would become known as MRI for research and medical application. He encouraged interdisciplinary studies among medical and basic science departments nationally and internationally and created the earliest short courses and materials in how MRI could be interpreted and used for patients. At the same time, he represented the United States several times at IAEA special meetings in Vienna and Leipzig for cooperation in using stable isotopes in agricultural endeavors, Leipzig afforded many hair-raising experiences for a man of Russian origins behind the Iron Curtain! Among positions held at UNM were CNID Director, Deputy Director of the earliest Cancer Center under Tom Tomasi, MD, and later Chair of Cell Biology. His last professional decade was spent as a neuroscientist, chairing the National Institutes of Mental Health's Neuroscience Committee. In his years since retirement, he has been a voracious student of world economy and finance and how politics shapes those institutions. Nick is survived by his wife of 52 years, Janet, his son Gregory N. Matwiyoff, MD. Commander, Medical Corps, US Navy, daughter-in-law, Shannon Matwiyoff, the lights of his life grandchildren, Cassidy and Nicholas, all of San Diego; the cousins he was raised with as a brother, Yuldine Bellmore, of Rogers City, Delphine Budreau (Frank) of Kennebunk, ME, Delbert Jachcik of Detroit; and his brother-in-law, David K. Hogberg Ph.D. (Patricia) of Marshall, MI. He and Janet were blessed with the steady care and support of George Comerci, MD, friend and colleague, Walter Forman, MD, care givers for many months Barbara and Christy, and in his last months, Alliance Hospice nurses, Tammy and Denise and other Alliance staff. Cremation has taken place, and family, oldest friends and colleagues will attend a private Remembrance Gathering in the family home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Nicholas Matwiyoff Endowed Scholarship, and mailed to: Office of Development/ Michigan Tech Fund, c/o Eric Halonen, 1400 Townsend Dr., Houghton, MI 49931-1295, or to a charity of your choice. BELLMAN, LOUISE E. Long-time Albuquerque resident Louise E. Bellman passed away on February 13, 2015 after a long battle with pulmonary disease. She resided at La Vida Llena Retirement Community in Albuquerque. Daughter of Julius C. Prinz and Rose Prinz (nee Weinstein), Louise was born in New York City on April 21, 1934. Louise Prinz was recognized from an early age as a talented pianist and graduated from the High School of Music & Arts (NYC) in 1952 and subsequently attended Fredonia State Teachers College where she studied to be a music teacher. Louise married Walter Bellman in 1952. They were the proud parents of three sons, Peter and David (who were born in Bronx, New York) and Charles, who was born in Los Angeles where the young family had moved in 1959 as Walter started his career as a computer programmer/ analyst. In 1967, the young family relocated to the Northern Virginia area. In Virginia, after the children became more independent, Louise explored a new career path; she trained to work in a medical records library and was employed by Fairfax Hospital as a medical records technician. By 1994, both Louise and Walter had retired from their respective careers and they chose once again to relocate, this time to Albuquerque. With their new-found free time, they enjoyed together a great deal of music (life-long passions for them both), traveling and soaking in the rich cultural scene and natural beauty of their adopted home. Louise's love of nature and especially birds was easily satisfied in NM. Other activities that Louise cultivated were competitive table tennis and crocheting and knitting. She freely gave of her time at libraries, senior centers and donated her crocheting work to the sick and needy. Playing the piano was always a major part of her life, and in Albuquerque, Louise renewed her piano studies and especially enjoyed duet playing with friends. Louise was widowed in 2014 after 61 years of marriage to Walter. She is survived by sons Christopher J. Leighton (ne Peter), David (Ingrid) and Charles and granddaughter Lilly Bellman (Tim Barribeau). A memorial service will be held in the chapel at La Vida Llena (10501 Lagrima de Oro Rd. NE ABQ, 87111) on Wednesday, March 4 at 2:00 pm. (Contributions in her honor may be made to the charity: "Guiding Eyes for the Blind.")

BLEAKLY, DAVID On February 3, 2015, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, David Lewis Bleakly, 64, passed away due to complications of pancreatic cancer. He was born on August 17, 1950, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, to Richard Lewis and Bernice (Geerlings) Bleakly. He is survived by his wife, Denise (Egolf) Bleakly; son, Evan Walter Bleakly; his mother, of Albuquerque; and his brother Jeffrey William Bleakly, of Farmington, NM. David began his work career as a laboratory technologist at age 16 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, and continued in this field in Farmington, New Mexico, and Albuquerque (primarily the County Hospital then known as Bernalillo County Medical Center and St. Joseph's hospital). While working in the hospitals in 1973 he completed a Bachelor of University Studies degree at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. In 1978, he began building houses, eventually specializing in custom adobe homes while under the employ of other contractors. During the latter few years of this period he had a residential construction license (Raven Design and Construction) and operated with limited success. On June 30, 1985, David and Denise were married in Albuquerque; their only child Evan was born on July 20, 1994. In 1989 he began the third and final phase of his professional career by working in the Biology Department at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. The goal was to get a Master's degree in biology. He entered graduate school in 1990 and was a teaching assistant teaching labs in botany and the flora of New Mexico. During the summers of 1991-1993, he helped complete a biological inventory of the new El Malpais National Monument, south of Grants, New Mexico. Using the plants collected during the inventory he finished in 1994 a thesis called Flora and Vegetation of El Malpais National Monument Area, New Mexico. In 1993, he closed his construction business and started Bleakly Botanical and Biological LLC, a one-man consulting company. Consulting jobs chiefly entailed doing surveys for rare plants before certain construction projects could commence. Eventually, his areas of expertise expanded beyond plant identification to include wetland delineations and a range of other biological specialties. He worked mostly within New Mexico but also had jobs in other states. During the consulting years he collected thousands of plants which are intended to be donated to various herbaria in the state. In the final few years, in addition to his business, he was employed by Tetra Tech, a large international environmental consulting firm. David had widely ranging interests. He had a natural talent in art which unfortunately he pursued only intermittently and very modest ability in music; nevertheless he particularly enjoyed playing the piano for his own amusement. Photography was lifelong passion; in college learned to process and print black and white film and over the years took more than 800 rolls of Kodachrome. Generally on a modest scale he collected many things including books (1000s), minerals, fossils, natural history objects, human artifacts, exotic woods, post cards, old maps and prints. He and his family enjoyed traveling especially in the western United States. Other activities he took delight in were reading and cooking. He was an active member of the First Unitarian Church. A memorial service will be held there on February 22, 2015. At 4 pm. The Church is located at 3701 Carlisle Boulevard Northeast, Albuquerque, near the corner of Carlisle and Comanche. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Roadrunner Food Bank or the church food pantry. His remains are interred at the San Jose de Armijo Cemetery, Albuquerque.
