AUSTIN, MARGARET IRENE (NEE ALLEN) Margaret 'Peggy' Irene (nee Allen) Ortiz Austin was called home Sunday, February 15, she was 87. She was preceded in death by her son, Charles Ruben Ortiz; her husband Leon Austin known to his grandchildren as 'PomPom'; her father Walter Allen Sr. and mother Lucille (nee Duke) Allen. She was a rebellious towheaded child, second to the youngest of twelve siblings, from Memphis, TN. She was last of the Allen kids. She moved to Albuquerque as a young wife and mother after meeting and marrying Max Ruben Ortiz, deceased, formerly of Pena Blanca, NM. Even though she lived in NM for over sixty years, her southern accent still popped up every-now-and-again. She was rebellious and generous by nature and was never afraid of hard work or speaking up, a genuine person. She often said that if she had ever won the lottery the very first thing she would do was build an orphanage where she would then give porcelain dolls to all the girls. She was an adventurous soul, a protective and encouraging mother and grandmother, a feisty, playful great-grandmother. She was everyone's 'Nanny'. She raised her grandson, Vincent Ortiz, single-handedly. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Lee, and son-in-law, Michael J. Cordaro; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth 'Dolly' Ortiz; numerous grandchildren: Tanya 'Bang-bang' and husband, Jason Brown, and children Averie and Aiden; Tina 'TeeTee' and husband, Mark Cotinola, and children Monique and Marcos; Yvette Ortiz and children Michael Ortiz and Alyssa Romero; Celena and fiance Brandon Mason and children Brandon Jr., B'Angelo and Carmelo; Vincent 'Little Buzzard' Ortiz and children Jaden, Ezekiah and Naysa; and Jennifer and husband, Martin Benavidez and children Jolene and Michael and one great-great- grandchild, Lenaya Romero. BLEAKLY, DAVID On February 3, 2015, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, David Lewis Bleakly, 64, passed away due to complications of pancreatic cancer. He was born on August 17, 1950, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, to Richard Lewis and Bernice (Geerlings) Bleakly. He is survived by his wife, Denise (Egolf) Bleakly; son, Evan Walter Bleakly; his mother, of Albuquerque; and his brother Jeffrey William Bleakly, of Farmington, NM. David began his work career as a laboratory technologist at age 16 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, and continued in this field in Farmington, New Mexico, and Albuquerque (primarily the County Hospital then known as Bernalillo County Medical Center and St. Joseph's hospital). While working in the hospitals in 1973 he completed a Bachelor of University Studies degree at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. In 1978, he began building houses, eventually specializing in custom adobe homes while under the employ of other contractors. During the latter few years of this period he had a residential construction license (Raven Design and Construction) and operated with limited success. On June 30, 1985, David and Denise were married in Albuquerque; their only child Evan was born on July 20, 1994. In 1989 he began the third and final phase of his professional career by working in the Biology Department at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. The goal was to get a Master's degree in biology. He entered graduate school in 1990 and was a teaching assistant teaching labs in botany and the flora of New Mexico. During the summers of 1991-1993, he helped complete a biological inventory of the new El Malpais National Monument, south of Grants, New Mexico. Using the plants collected during the inventory he finished in 1994 a thesis called Flora and Vegetation of El Malpais National Monument Area, New Mexico. In 1993, he closed his construction business and started Bleakly Botanical and Biological LLC, a one-man consulting company. Consulting jobs chiefly entailed doing surveys for rare plants before certain construction projects could commence. Eventually, his areas of expertise expanded beyond plant identification to include wetland delineations and a range of other biological specialties. He worked mostly within New Mexico but also had jobs in other states. During the consulting years he collected thousands of plants which are intended to be donated to various herbaria in the state. In the final few years, in addition to his business, he was employed by Tetra Tech, a large international environmental consulting firm. David had widely ranging interests. He had a natural talent in art which unfortunately he pursued only intermittently and very modest ability in music; nevertheless he particularly enjoyed playing the piano for his own amusement. Photography was lifelong passion; in college learned to process and print black and white film and over the years took more than 800 rolls of Kodachrome. Generally on a modest scale he collected many things including books (1000s), minerals, fossils, natural history objects, human artifacts, exotic woods, post cards, old maps and prints. He and his family enjoyed traveling especially in the western United States. Other activities he took delight in were reading and cooking. He was an active member of the First Unitarian Church. A memorial service will be held there on February 22, 2015. At 4 pm. The Church is located at 3701 Carlisle Boulevard Northeast, Albuquerque, near the corner of Carlisle and Comanche. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Roadrunner Food Bank or the church food pantry. His remains are interred at the San Jose de Armijo Cemetery, Albuquerque.

Marion was born in 1922 in Las Vegas, New Mexico. She is survived by her husband Sam Goodman; sons, Stuart Goodman of Albuquerque, David Goodman and grandson Jacob Goodman of Nashville, Tennessee; and sister Elaine Taichert Zohn of Denver, Colorado. After graduating high school, Marion pursued her love of theater and enrolled in Pasadena Playhouse, in California. She often mentioned that Raymond Burr, who played Perry Mason in the television series, was her classmate. Marion also attended Ward Belmont College in Nashville, Tennessee. Marion was an accomplished piano player and after hearing a popular song on the radio, could sit down and play it by ear. Needless to say, she was the life of the party. He was transferred to the Army Air Corp Base in West Palm Beach, Florida where they had a military wedding in 1943. They most recently celebrated their 72nd anniversary. Marion and Sam after World War II returned to Las Vegas, where Sam joined the Joseph A.Taichert Company and learned the wool, hide, and pelt business. Marion was a Cub Scout leader and also ran the snack bar at little league. At the annual Paul D. Henry Elementary School carnival, she would dress up as the gypsy fortune teller. She would read the tea leaves and predict that each little girl would become a princess and each boy would get a pony. She loved to play golf. She was also an avid gardener, and had colorful flower and bountiful vegetable gardens. She earned her teaching credentials at New Mexico Highlands University and taught middle school for many years. She enjoyed directing, choreographing, and producing the annual benefit talent show. In 1980, Sam changed companies and he and Marion moved to southern California where it was warm all year. Marion would travel with Sam on business trips to Asia and Europe. She enjoyed playing golf and the accessibility to the many art venues. Marion had a lovely service and was laid to rest at Mt. Sinai Cemetery in the Hollywood Hills. Contributions can be made to a charity of choice that would honor the memory of Marion Goodman.

KUNZMAN, WALLACE WILLIAM age 89, passed away peacefully in sleep, February 11, 2015 in Albuquerque, NM. Wally was born June 14, 1925 to Elva and Samuel L. Kunzman in Selma, IA. Wally grew up in rural southeastern Iowa and like every boy in his neighborhood he had to choose between rooting for the Cubs or for the Cardinals. However, in 1935 an 11th straight win over the Dodgers to put the Cubs in first place sealed Wally's fate as a Cubs fan and he was the best fan a team could ever ask for. Wally was in the Navy during WWII on the USS Bennett, seeing action throughout the pacific, most notably in the battle of Okinawa and Iwo Jima. He graduated from Parsons College with a degree in English and moved to New Mexico in 1958. Wally held several careers throughout his life, including a coach, teacher and most notably as an insurance salesman. He had a series 7 securities license, CLU and CHFC designations. He was beloved by all his clients and was one of the most good-natured people you could ever meet. Wally was a great American and a testament to the human spirit. He had cheated death, most notably when a dud bomb damaged his ship during the battle of Iwo Jima, when a Kamikaze left his destroyer dead in the water during the invasion of Okinawa, and when his ship was caught in a typhoon in the Aleutian Islands right after' the war. More comically, in hindsight, he was trying to beat a train across the tracks when he was driving a truck in the 1950's. Wally said he knew he was in trouble when he realized it was going to be a tie. His tie with the train sent him to the hospital and then to a new career in insurance. Wally had a vision of playing ball with his sons. It took hold. The "Kunzmans" played softball for over a decade with sons, friends and a good recruit or two. They won trophies, had fun and "The Aces" were good. Wally retired from pitching at age 60 and son James took over. Throughout his life Wally always had a positive attitude and saw the brighter side of things. This may have been either the cause or the effect of his being a lifelong Cubs fan, but with Wally hope always sprung eternal and hopefully he can see his beloved Cubs win a World Series from the other side. Wally was preceded in death by his mother and father, Samuel and Elva, his first wife, Caroline, his son, James S. Kunzman, his grandson, Cole Kunzman, his nephew Douglas Parks and brother-in-law O.R. Parks. Wallace is survived by his wife of 40 years, Doris; his sons Wallace W. Jr. and wife DeeAnn, Jeffrey E. and wife Lucille; his daughter-in-law Deborah; step-children Jeri and husband Lonnie Mowry, Jodene Hanna and Jeff Vallentine; his two siblings, Pauline Parks and Charley Kunzman and wife Shirley; and grandchildren Samuel J. and Mark A. Kunzman, Jamis Kunzman, Ashley Kerr, Babette Cooper, Courtney and Kayla Vallentine, nieces Teri, Jani and Cindy; and numerous great- grandchildren. Wally will be sorely missed. A memorial will be held at a later date, sometime in May.

OWENS, MARGARETHA DAHMEN (PEGGY) passed away on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at the age of eighty-seven. She is survived by her husband, Albert T. Owens; their son, Theodor B. Owens; her brothers Lloyd C. Dahmen, Joseph Dahmen, and David Dahmen; her godchildren Denali, Connor and Maia Schmidt; and a large extended family. Peggy was the niece of Dr. Seuss, the much-loved childrens' book author, whose real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel. Dr. Seuss' book "I Had Trouble in Getting to Solla Sollew" was dedicated to her. She was a graduate of Kathryn Gibbs secretarial school in Boston, MA. Her classmates described her as "vivacious, witty, intelligent" and predicted a fun-filled future for a girl who had "what it takes". After graduation in 1950, she worked for Paine Webber in Boston, followed by three years at the Duke University School of Medicine in North Carolina. Soon after moving to San Diego, California, Peggy found employment at the Navy Electronics Laboratory. This is where she met her future husband, Albert Owens, a Lieutenant in the Navy, and a graduate of Brown University and MIT. In 1952, Peggy and Al were married in La Jolla, CA, home of Dr. Seuss. Shortly thereafter, the couple moved to New York where Al worked for a few months for Peggy's father as an engineering consultant in his furniture-manufacturing business. A few months later the young couple headed back to California where Al began his thrity-two-year-long career in the communications satellite field at the Hughes Aircraft Company in Los Angeles. In addition to being an active member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church in the Westwood area of Los Angeles, Peggy generously served her community in many ways. She was a tutor for the remedial-reading program for children in public schools, and was a volunteer for both the UCLA Art Council and the UCLA Medical Center. At the Medical Center she worked in both outpatient pediatrics and the volunteer office, accumulating over eight thousand hours of volunteer service. After Al's retirement, he and Peggy moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico to be closer to their son, Ted. Peggy was an active member of St. Chad's Episcopal Church for many years, and was a highly dedicated volunteer at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, where she worked in the volunteer office for more than two decades. In 2007, she was awarded "The Presidents's Call-to-Service Award" from the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation in Washington DC. Upon her retirement from the museum in 2012, she had logged 9,523 hoursmore volunteer hours than any other person in the organization's history. The museum created an award in her honor, naming it "The Peggy Owens Lifetime Achievement Award." Peggy was an avid gardener and was blessed with an innate sense of design for home interiors as well as landscaping. The xeric gardens she cultivated at her home were featured on numerous tours. Peggy unfailingly reached out to every person in need, and was known for her caring and kind personality, as well as her intelligence and her mischievous sense of humor. A memorial service will be held at St. Chad's Episcopal Church in Northeast Heights on Saturday morning, March 7th, at ten-thirty. In lieu on flowers, Peggy's family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimers Association of New Mexico.
