Obituary for AUSTIN

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday February 22, 2015

AUSTIN, MARGARET IRENE (NEE ALLEN) Margaret 'Peggy' Irene (nee Allen) Ortiz Austin was called home Sunday, February 15, she was 87. She was preceded in death by her son, Charles Ruben Ortiz; her husband Leon Austin known to his grandchildren as 'PomPom'; her father Walter Allen Sr. and mother Lucille (nee Duke) Allen. She was a rebellious towheaded child, second to the youngest of twelve siblings, from Memphis, TN. She was last of the Allen kids. She moved to Albuquerque as a young wife and mother after meeting and marrying Max Ruben Ortiz, deceased, formerly of Pena Blanca, NM. Even though she lived in NM for over sixty years, her southern accent still popped up every-now-and-again. She was rebellious and generous by nature and was never afraid of hard work or speaking up, a genuine person. She often said that if she had ever won the lottery the very first thing she would do was build an orphanage where she would then give porcelain dolls to all the girls. She was an adventurous soul, a protective and encouraging mother and grandmother, a feisty, playful great-grandmother. She was everyone's 'Nanny'. She raised her grandson, Vincent Ortiz, single-handedly. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Lee, and son-in-law, Michael J. Cordaro; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth 'Dolly' Ortiz; numerous grandchildren: Tanya 'Bang-bang' and husband, Jason Brown, and children Averie and Aiden; Tina 'TeeTee' and husband, Mark Cotinola, and children Monique and Marcos; Yvette Ortiz and children Michael Ortiz and Alyssa Romero; Celena and fiance Brandon Mason and children Brandon Jr., B'Angelo and Carmelo; Vincent 'Little Buzzard' Ortiz and children Jaden, Ezekiah and Naysa; and Jennifer and husband, Martin Benavidez and children Jolene and Michael and one great-great- grandchild, Lenaya Romero. Services will be private; her ashes will be thrown-to-winds per her wishes Mama's work is done. Nanny would have it no other way...
