ARCHIBEQUE, TILLIE SANCHEZ 3/8/14 One long year without you. The silence in the house is deafening. Your presence and voice, I miss, is unrelenting. On year ago today our lives did change. You for going and me for staying. You didn't cry and carry on, you were so very strong. You looked at each one of us with your beautiful eyes, just long enough to say goodbye. You are my mother forever, no one can take that away. I love and miss you so, with every passing day. They say time heals all sorrows and helps us to forget. But, time so far has only proved how much I miss you yet! Forever in my heart, mom. Till we meet again. Christine

MATWIYOFF, NICHOLAS ALEXANDER August, 1937- February, 2015 Beloved husband and father, devoted grandfather and father-in-law, eminent scientist, superb raconteur and conversationalist, and good friend and colleague, Nick quietly passed at home on Saturday, February 21, 2015. His boyhood was spent in Rogers City, MI. He earned his BS in chemistry from Michigan Technological University in 1959 & received his MS/Ph.D. at University of Illinois, Champagne/ Urbana graduating in 1962. He and Janet Hogberg Matwiyoff married that same year and went to Stanford University, for a year of Post-Doctoral studies, then joined the Penn State chemistry faculty for five years, mentoring many graduate students and publishing widely in nuclear magnetic resonance and spectroscopy. Summers were spent consulting at Los Alamos National Labs and in 1968, he accepted a position at CNC division at LANL, eventually moving into life sciences for studies and applications for magnetic resonance. In those years he and his family lived in Santa Fe, making many friends there. He was asked by Gov. Bruce King's Science Advisor and innovator to help set up NM Centers for Technical Excellence around the state. He was most influential in establishing the UNM Medical School's Center for Non-invasive Diagnosis in 1981 (now The Mind Research Network) using one of the earliest and largest magnets for what would become known as MRI for research and medical application. He encouraged interdisciplinary studies among medical and basic science departments nationally and internationally and created the earliest short courses and materials in how MRI could be interpreted and used for patients. At the same time, he represented the United States several times at IAEA special meetings in Vienna and Leipzig for cooperation in using stable isotopes in agricultural endeavors, Leipzig afforded many hair-raising experiences for a man of Russian origins behind the Iron Curtain! Among positions held at UNM were CNID Director, Deputy Director of the earliest Cancer Center under Tom Tomasi, MD, and later Chair of Cell Biology. His last professional decade was spent as a neuroscientist, chairing the National Institutes of Mental Health's Neuroscience Committee. In his years since retirement, he has been a voracious student of world economy and finance and how politics shapes those institutions. Nick is survived by his wife of 52 years, Janet, his son Gregory N. Matwiyoff, MD. Commander, Medical Corps, US Navy, daughter-in-law, Shannon Matwiyoff, the lights of his life grandchildren, Cassidy and Nicholas, all of San Diego; the cousins he was raised with as a brother, Yuldine Bellmore, of Rogers City, Delphine Budreau (Frank) of Kennebunk, ME, Delbert Jachcik of Detroit; and his brother-in-law, David K. Hogberg Ph.D. (Patricia) of Marshall, MI. He and Janet were blessed with the steady care and support of George Comerci, MD, friend and colleague, Walter Forman, MD, care givers for many months Barbara and Christy, and in his last months, Alliance Hospice nurses, Tammy and Denise and other Alliance staff. Cremation has taken place, and family, oldest friends and colleagues will attend a private Remembrance Gathering in the family home. ROCKWELL, SANDRA In Memory of Sandra Rockwell 3/25/37-3/6/14 Sandra, Sandy, Miss Rock, Coach Rock was a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, daughter, sister, cousin, aunt, teacher, coach, mentor, friend, and confidant. She had a wonderful marriage for over 52 years to the father of her two children, she had four amazing grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. She led a life full of loyalty and giving. A teacher at Rio Grande High School, substitute, and coach for 26 years, she guided and influenced countless students and athletes to strive beyond what they thought possible, and was proud of each individual success. She earned many accolades for her coaching skills, and was even named National High School Softball Coach of the Year in 1982. Lessons she taught in and out of the classroom and practice ingrained themselves into the hearts and minds of her pupils long past their high school years and into their adult lives. As a friend, she listened and helped innumerable people through hardships, and for this was blessed. Her friends and family grew to count on the impossibly wonderful combination of loyalty, kindness, generosity and humor that made up her soul. The laughter and sincerity that followed her through life ensured that no one around could ever feel anything but cared for. This led to the expansion of family to include friends that became integral to the network of support that evolved around her. Sandra is missed by four generations of people who loved her dearly, and whose capacity for caring and acceptance have everything to do with the lessons that she taught them. The positive influence she had upon the world around her carry on through the actions and memories of the people she left behind. We miss her gullibility, and let's not forget her pasole. This last year we miss you her sparkling eyes and warm smile, and so much more, every day. She is with us in our hearts and we feel her touch us and guide us every day. Any remembrances can be sent to Stars for the Cure, PO Box 6023, Bend Oregon, 97708. A nonprofit group of walkers made up of cancer survivors and those left behind.

RUST, KATHERINE HEFFERNAN Katherine, born January 13, 1928, died on March 1, 2015 following a full life. A devoted mother, friend of nature, animals and the arts with a passion for travel. She'd imagine her best day starts with a walk on the beach, searching for seashells, later swimming in the ocean then surrounding her day with music, reading a good book, sharing scrumptious food and conversation with family and friends. Her motto 'to give back' was learned from her now deceased parents, Amy Burgess and Ralph J Heffernan, while growing up in Bloomington, Illinois - same town as her ex-late husband - John (Jack) Laurence Rust. They married June, 1949 later divorcing 1968, but in-between five children were born (2nd child, Catherine Hollis Rust, died following childbirth). Surviving four are Julia Bowdich (Ray, deceased), Jane Janke (Bill), Amy Donohue (Jim), and John Rust (Jamie); blessed with grandchildren Glenn Janke, Jodie J Maguire (Michael), Erin D Stephens (Adam), Tom Donohue, John Donohue, Kelsey Rust and Taryon Zeleny; plus great- grandchildren: Mikey Maguire, Paxton Stephens, Avery Stephens, Steel Rust and Skylar Rust. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Justin D. Rust, and her sisters Ruthmary Crawford (John), Ann Spierling (Robert), plus her brother John Heffernan (Patti.) Katherine (Katie) adored life, following her passions across the globe; joining the efforts of Jane Goodall, the Orangutans Research and Conservation Project, The Leakey Foundation and the School of American Research, Sir Edmund Hillary's with the Sherpas, Dalai Lama, and the Tibetan people. In 1971 she spoke on the Congressional Floor alongside the Taos Indian Pueblo Governor and Council in their successful efforts when asking the US Government for protection in perpetuity of sacred lands at Blue Lake. A benefactor to Native American Indian students, she'd sponsor their work, encouraging them to pursue their passions as a career. In August 1968, she was a 'Judge' at both the 47th Annual Indian Market and the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial in Gallup, NM She had a gift for fundraising, in the early '60's she helped the United Way, and later the Santa Fe Opera following a destructive fire. She was deeply touched when Project Share attached her nameplate permanently on a closet in appreciation for her help, showing up weekly year after year. She served on the Board of Directors at The Santa Fe Opera, and in 1996 as an Honorary Director on the Board at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA), served on the Board of Trustees at both The Wheelwright Museum as well as The Millicent Rogers Museum in 1986+1987 and the Albuquerque Historical Society. At her request, no service will be held. As a memorial to Katherine, please extend an act of kindness to someone in need and spread the same kind of love and joy that she provided to so many. We'll miss you and thank you for your lessons, laughter and love.

SCHENCK, BETTY LOU Betty Lou (Betsy) Schenck (nee Schade) of Carbondale, Colorado, died on Sunday, March 1, 2015, after a brief illness; she was surrounded by her loving family and her husband of 63 years, Robert "Bob" Schenck. Betty was 87 years old. Betty was born on May 12, 1927 in Trinidad, Colorado to Ruth and Ralph Schade. Betty and her two siblings, Alan and Alice, spent their early years in Albuquerque where she attended Ernie Pyle Middle School before going on to Albuquerque High School (class of 1945). Betty completed two years at the University of New Mexico, before graduating with a BA in Music from Colorado College in 1949. Betty fondly remembered playing at sorority and fraternity parties to offset expenses through college, and she continued to be an entertainer for over 70 years. Betty left for New York to play classical piano, but she eventually moved to Denver where she met her future husband, Bob Schenck, while looking for a place to use as a recital hall. Betty and Bob were married at St. John's Episcopal Church in Denver on December 17, 1951. Betty and Bob then moved to New Braunfels, Texas where all six Schenck children were born. However, Betty and Bob could not stay away from Colorado for long, and they moved the family back to Carbondale in 1968, where they made Missouri Heights their home. Betty spent a wonderful 25 years teaching music at Colorado Mountain College and during her time there she received her M.A. in Music from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1991. Betty was loved by students of all levels and influenced many with her music and stage productions in the Roaring Fork Valley. Fiddler on the Roof, The Mikado, Oklahoma, Cabaret, H.M.S. Pinafore, and The Sound of Music comprise a short list of many musicals performed under the guidance of Betty Lou at the Crystal Theater in Carbondale. Betty also loved Sundays at St. Barnabas Church where she combined worship with her love for music for many years, often playing the organ and always singing during the services. Betty will be remembered professionally as an excellent teacher, a talented performer, and a leading figure in the arts community, but she is best remembered for her loving smile, infectious laughter, and joy for life. Betty is survived by her husband, Bob; their loving children, Susan Schenck of Denver (husband Ed Drummond, granddaughter Meriel), Barbara Hale of Grand Junction (husband Russell, grandsons Robert, David, & Jonathan), Bobby Schenck of Albuquerque (wife Tricia, grandchildren Lillian, Augustus, Helen, George, and Marian), Patty Naft of Paonia (husband Skip Naft), Paula Byra of Denver (husband Andy Byra, granddaughter Betsy), and John Schenck of Carbondale (wife Kellie and grandchildren Dara, Rand, Paul, and Dayton); and younger sister Alice Hofer (nieces Laurie, Carrie, and Holly). Funeral services are scheduled for noon, Saturday, March 7, 2015 at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church (546 Hyland Park Dr., Glenwood Springs) with a reception to follow at the Rivers Restaurant (2525 S Grand Ave, Glenwood Springs) from 1:30 to 4:00 pm. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Betty's life. WHITE, LOR June 16, 1923 February 27, 2015 When you read this, I will be at the big beautiful golf course in the sky waiting for my tee time. What a wondrous life it has been. Born in California (second generation) with loving parents and a beautiful sister, Sally, who gave me four handsome nephews. I was married to Samuel Behrens, who came up here much too soon. I have two terrific daughters, Samantha Blauwkamp, married to Rol, making her a stepmother to nine adult children and grandmother to 16 little ones. (He loved to call me his "precious mother-in-law!") Donna Motsinger, married to Ted, a wonderful man of many talents. Those two gave me three special grandsons, Dylan, Luke, married to Rachel, and Jeffrey married to Melissa who gave me my great-granddaughter, Kaileigh. All though living far away from us but very much in our hearts are Raychel, Whitley, Brandon, Nolan, Jeff, Tara, and Hailey. In 1969, while visiting friends in Hawaii I met Van White. Little did I think a year later I would be living in the "Land of Enchantment" married to my precious Van, who became a loving father to my girls. We shared 44 years sharing new adventures, seeing a lot of this world, and a love that was so special. Because of Van's well-known and respected business, Albuquerque Safe Company, I was invited on the Board of Directors of various organizations. What fun it was to be on the Oversight Building Committee for the new Albuquerque Convention Center. What an honor to be the first woman to tour the site (although a hard hat really ruins a hairdo). Being a part of the Navy League, when it was being established in New Mexico, was another great experience. An interesting board was the Better Business Bureau. Amazing what people have to complain about and also how some businesses are run. The Pilot Club had an outstanding membership and was known for giving to the community. The Santa Fe Opera was enriched by an amazing group of women in the Albuquerque Opera Guild. We spent hours preparing and hosting the most exquisite formal holiday dinner parties for several years with all of the proceeds going to the Opera. Knowing my love of theater, I was on and off the Board of Directors of the Albuquerque Little Theater for several years. That was years of fun. The year I was treasurer they would place a large L in the theater window. This would tell me, when I was on my way to the Albuquerque Country Club, that they needed me to come in and sign checks! Being a part of the theater was a grand experience. One of my most rewarding board experiences was working on the Board of Goodwill Industries. Spending 23 years with them and honored to serve three years as President. Van and I re-established the Mercedes Benz Club in 1973 and what fun times we've had all these years. Serving on the Amapola Garden Club Board was a delight. While my illness prevented me from becoming club president, the club made me their Honorary 2015 President. What a great bunch of gals. I was honored to have been involved with the Sun Country Golf Association almost since its inception. The Association benefits and represents all amateur golfers. Being a board member involved traveling to various golf courses around the State and El Paso. They do so much work for tournaments, rules, course measurements and are responsible for our handicaps, among many other duties. Having broken my leg skiing (6 months in a cast), I had to give up tennis and golf became my real passion. In those days, we "girls" from the Albuquerque Country Club (the best country club in the State) traveled all around New Mexico playing in special tournaments including some in Arizona. What a bunch of fun gals. They're all up here now playing lots of golf and bridge, and waiting for me to teach them Mah-Jongg. Being a member of the Women's Golf Association I became a Board Member on and off for years, serving as President in 1984. Those were wonderful years. So many talented women to have as friends and so many golf games, lunches, and parties almost every weekend at the Club. What a life! Gotta go. They just called us, God's "Fearsome Foursome," to the tee box. We're a heck of a team. My partners are Dylan, Bria, and Reva Jo. My favorite caddy is my adorable son, Robin, who is always telling me to keep my head down. See ya, but not too soon I hope. P.S. No funeral. Much too boring.
