LUJAN, BEN SPEAKER Ben Lujan ended his beautiful journey in this world with his beloved wife Carmen of 53 years and his pride and joy, his children and grandchildren by his side. He made the transition to begin his spiritual journey home peacefully on Tuesday evening at 10:45 at CHRISTIS St. Vincent's Hospital. Ben was born to Nestora and Celedon Lujan on July 12, 1935. His father was a sheepherder and was one of the first laborers recruited for the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos. Ben Lujan grew up in very humble beginnings in the Nambe valley where he was born and where he lived all of his life with his wife and children. The original home built by his father remains an intimate part of the family home in Nambe. Ben attended St. Michael's and Pojoaque High Schools. It was there in Pojoaque that he met his sweetheart who would become his lifelong companion and soul mate, his wife Carmen. He was a basketball player and she was a cheerleader. Ben fell in love with Carmen and they were married for 53 years. After graduating from high school, he started college, but finances were tight and because he could not afford to finish college he went off to work. It was this disappointment early in his life that would be the seed that that gave birth to a career in public service. That short-lived dream of becoming the first college graduate in his family forced him into the workforce, and he began his career as an ironworker, which he continued until the day he retired. Ben and Carmen started a family with Shirley, Jackie and Jerome. And as Carmen shares the story, then came our miracle baby, Ben Ray, now Congressman Ben Ray Lujan. Their children blessed them with nine grandchildren and one great-grandson. Ben loved the time he spent with his children, grandchildren, and recently, his great-grandson. They live in Nambe near an acequia that Ben fondly reminded his family, "el agua es la vida." Alongside the river of life is a huge majestic cotton wood tree reaching toward the sky planted by the family over 50 years ago that symbolizes the deep and strong cultural and traditional roots that defined a set of core values. Water, land, family and faith in God defined those core values that guided Ben's life. He would say, "You have to work the land to raise your children and be good parents." Ben followed his passion to be in the service of others, which was central to his core values and upbringing. The greatest gift in life he would share "is our ability to use what God gave to us to help make this world a better place." His passion, faith and service converged when he discovered elected office as the vehicle to fulfill his spirit of giving. He was elected to the Santa Fe County Commission in 1970. In 1974, Ben was elected to the New Mexico House of Representatives. He is the only member of the House to serve all three leadership positions. Ben served as the Majority Whip, the Majority Floor Leader and became the second longest Speaker of the House until his passing. He was preceded in death by his parents Celedon and Nestora Lujan; brothers, Ramos, Gustavo and Nestor; and sisters, Olivama and Josie. He is survived by his wife Carmen; daughters, Shirley and Jackie (Marvin); sons, Jerome (Johnell) and Ben Ray; grandchildren, Miranda (Eric), Jason, Dominic, Allison, Benjamin, Joseph, Nathaneal, Jordan and Janae; great-grandson, Shane; brothers, Felix (Vera) and Ernesto (Carrie); sister Matilda; sister-in-law, Celia; and many other family and friends. Ben will lie in state in the Rotunda of the New Mexico State Capitol from 11:00am to 2:00pm on Thursday, December 27th. A public viewing is scheduled at 5:30 pm and a Rosary at 7:00pm on Friday, December 28th at the Ben Lujan Gymnasium at Pojoaque High School. A Mass of Resurrection is scheduled for 9:00 am on Saturday, December 29th at St. Francis Cathedral Basilica in Santa Fe and Ben will be laid to rest in Nambe following Mass. A reception is scheduled at the Ben Lujan Gymnasium following interment. The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude for all the prayers, support and encouragement during Ben's illness. Ben would often say, "It is by the prayers of so many that I remain strong physically and spiritually. Prayers are very powerful." In Lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the UNM Cancer Center or to the Speaker Ben Lujan Scholarship Memorial Fund at any Century Bank Branch. Carmen and the family have entrusted their care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Espanola Valley. 505-747-7477 or www.devargasfuneral.com

SHAHEN, TIMOTHY surrounded by his loving family, made his transition on December 7, 2012 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was born in Brooklyn, NY to Guy and Grace Shahen and was raised in a picture perfect beach village on Long Island. When he met his wife of thirty-nine years, Lori, it was love at first sight. Their adventures included: hiking the Grand Canyon with new boots, Tim's tenure as an Associate Professor at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona, ten years with Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco, Ride the Rockies twice, Ride Oregon and years of adventure travel. Tim received his Bachelor's degree from Notre Dame University in 1965 and was an avid fan of the "Fighting Irish." He received his Master's and Doctorate degrees from Purdue University. For most of his career, Tim was a banker. Having met all traditional definitions of "success," Tim and Lori left Albuquerque and lived their dream of restoring a historic farmhouse property in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and opening a Bed and Breakfast Inn. After selling the Inn in 2001, Tim and Lori made the 500 mile El Camino de Santiago pilgrimage across the northern mountains of Spain. Tim's laughter could be heard for miles and filled the hearts of everyone around him. He will be remembered for his kindness, his generosity, and his willingness to "be there no matter what" in times of struggle, suffering and joy. For Tim, love was a verb not a noun. In recent years, Tim's most satisfying times were spent at the Krain ranch in Colorado. There he strung fences, mothered baby calves and built irrigation systems. Tim's ashes will be taken to this place of beauty and peace where he lived out every boy's dream of being a "cowboy" with his dear friend, Leon. Tim is survived by his wife, Lori; his sister, Patricia Shahen; his nephews, Marcus Lee Shahen and Troy Lee Shahen; and his nieces, Karen Patricia (Yamhure) Frank, Laura Yamhure Thompson, and Kelly Michelle (Shahen) McBride. Tim's parents and beloved younger brother, Thomas Lee Shahen, made their transitions earlier and will welcome him home. In lieu of flowers, donations in Tim's name may be sent to: Albuquerque Reads - a Chamber of Commerce program of volunteer reading tutors who work with kindergarten school children to help them acquire strong reading skills. Donations may be sent to: Albuquerque Reads, attn: Beth Hemmerich, 115 Gold Avenue, SW, Suite 201, Albuquerque, NM 87102 or www.abqreads.com for on line donations. Tim was a founding member of the Rio Grande Center for Spiritual Learning in Albuquerque. Donations (in his name) will fund class scholarships and recognize Tim's love for this vibrant community. Donation details will be posted at: Rio Grande Center for Spiritual Living, 901 Rio Grande Blvd NW, Suite E-130, Albuquerque, NM 87104 or to: www.riograndecenter forspiritualliving.org A Celebration of Life will be on Wednesday, January 26, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Daniels Family Funeral Services, 7601 Wyoming Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM. WELSH, DANA Age 87, peacefully passed away December 18, 2012. Dana was born on November 16, 1925 to Ewald and Lola Jesswein of Gillett, AR. She grew up in this small southern town as a tom-boy and social renegade, with a strong opinion of the reigning social system and place of a woman in society. She played sports, worked at the family farm and, in at least a nod to her place in the social firmament, became an accomplished piano player. Dana went on to become the first woman to earn a Chemical Engineering degree from the University of Arkansas. Following graduation she settled into raising a family in Arkansas, Albuquerque, Santa Barbara, CA, Reno, NV, and, finally, returned to her beloved New Mexico for the final 27 year chapter of her life. Her legacy was as "Grandma" to her five grandchildren. She loved them deeply and they, her. In her later years she willingly adopted the children and grandchildren of her son, Jim's, second family as her own. Dana had a large and accepting heart and left an endearing legacy for all who knew her. If you were her friend, you knew it. Dana was preceeded by her parents, her first child Teresa Arcularius and her grandson Zachary Steele. She is survived by grandsons Jess and Jacob Arcularius; her daughter Lisa Steele and her sons Stephen Wisdom and Paul Wisdom; her son Jim and his wife Carol; and Carol's children and their families - Misti Duffy, husband Heath and children Jacob and Hannah; Justin Ashcraft, wife Lisa and children Maya, Ella and Ian, and; Adam Ashcraft, wife Lisa and children Jordan and Zachary. Dana is also survived by Stella Nowicki, her dedicated and ever-present caregiver and friend. Dana's candle has flickered out, but her light will remain with all of us. No formal services will be held per Dana's direction. The family will host a small remembrance gathering at the home of her son, the afternoon of January 13, 2013. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to your favorite charity. FRENCH 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE (505) 823-9400
