CHAVEZ -- JON PAUL 7/7/1985 - 3/28/2011 Today we awake with sadness in the air, for it has been one VERY LONG YEAR... We ask our Lord, "Why did you take him away?"... he had only begun to make his own way. It has been so hard to let him go, especially when the memories start to flow. There have been so many tears, and the pain is always oh so near... We pray to our Lord to help us get through this day; please make this HEARTACHE go away!!! As the darkness of night approaches there is sadness in the air as our Jon Paul hasn't been anywhere near... We refuse to say "Goodbye" for that only makes us cry. Goodnight my love for now we must rest because tomorrow is yet another qwest. We must worry not, that in God we will trust, that we will all be together again and that is a MUST. Jon Paul may your soul be resting in peace. Love forever!!! Mom, Dad and Jacob

DUNLAP -- CLYDE A. Age 91, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on March 25, 2012. Clyde was born December 18, 1920 in Trinidad, CO to Opal S. and Carl C. Dunlap. He lived as a young boy in the now "ghost town" of Dawson, NM. He moved to Albuquerque during the Great Depression and lived with his parents and three brothers on a small farm in the southwest valley. He graduated from Albuquerque High School where he set the state of New Mexico record in the 100 yard dash. This record stood for over 10 years. Clyde joined the Army Air Corps as a member of the 8th Air Force and served in World War II. He was stationed in Polebrook, Northamptonshire, England and became an engineer/top turret gunner on the B-17 "Flying Fortress" bomber aircraft. On the 14th mission (February, 1944) of then S/Sgt Dunlap's B-17, aka the "Pistol Packin' Mama" (508 Bomb Squadron, 351 Bomb Group H), the aircraft was attacked as it returned from a bombing run over Germany. After a furious gun battle with several Nazi aircraft in which all of the attacking enemy aircraft were destroyed, S/Sgt Dunlap's plane was forced to ditch into the wintry North Sea. As the crew struggled to exit the aircraft, S/Sgt Dunlap kept his poise and somehow found a way to release the aircraft's life raft, one of which had been heavily damaged by enemy fire. S/Sgt Dunlap and his fellow crew members were battered for several hours by 20-foot icy waves. While several crew members drowned or froze to death that day, S/Sgt Dunlap was able to save other lives besides his own, including that of crewmate S/Sgt "Red" Rawdon. He did that by holding Red's head out of the water for several hours as they all struggled in the one damaged, yet marginally usable life raft. He also slapped Red's face continually; something which Red later said kept him alive. When all hope of rescue had been lost, a British Air Sea Rescue vessel finally appeared on the horizon and rescued the surviving crew members thinking they were Germans, but were delighted to find they were "Yanks." These "Yanks" included S/Sgt Dunlap. Clyde was the last surviving member of this crew. Clyde spent the bulk of his professional career, over 40 years, at Sandia National Laboratories. He was a member of New Covenant Church. Clyde lived a full and wonderful life of gentleness, kindness, honesty, and honor. He married the love of his life, Doris M. Jurgensen, in 1946 and proved himself to be a faithful, loving husband to her until she passed away in 2007. He loved and missed her daily until he died. This beautiful love story included one child, his beloved daughter, Judith. Clyde was the ultimate husband and father and loved his family above all else. Clyde was also preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Ronald Dunlap and Carl Dunlap Jr. He is survived by his daughter, Judith (Judee) Dunlap Blaich and her husband, L. Mason Blaich; his beloved grandson, W. Parker Bryant and wife, Annie Bryant; great-granddaughter, Elison Ann Bryant; best friend and brother, Roy L. Dunlap; and numerous nieces and nephews. Special thanks go out to Clyde's brother, Roy L. Dunlap, his nephew, Roy Dunlap Jr., and his niece, Carla Beitler for the loving kindness extended to Clyde during the last several years of his life. Cremation has taken place and Memorial Services will be held Friday, March 30, 2012, 11:00 a.m., at the Chester T. French Memorial Mausoleum Chapel, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Please visit our online guestbook for Clyde at: www.RememberTheirStory.com FRENCH 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE (505) 823-9400

STEGMAIER -- RICHARD G. Age 83, passed away Friday, March 23, 2012 surrounded by his family. He had been a resident of Albuquerque since 2002. Richard was born June 6, 1928 in Heidenheim, Germany to Georg and Barbara Stegmaier. Trained as a machinist, he came to the US in 1952 as part of an exchange program designed to teach young Germans democratic principles and return them to Germany to assist in the rebuilding of the country after WWII. Fortunately for us, he met Jean Borkowski in Buffalo and returned to Germany just long enough to say his goodbyes. Jean and Richard were married in Buffalo on August 29, 1953. Their first child, Marguerite, was born in 1955. A year later, Richard became a US citizen with Marguerite at the ceremony. Twins, Michael and Mary Ellen followed in 1958. Richard used his German training to become a top-notch Tool and Die maker in the US. He was very proud of his work and had a career that spanned well over 50 years, helping to produce things as diverse as the Polaroid SX-70 camera, Fischer-Price Toys and Chevy Carburetors. By day a Tool and Die Maker, by night, a swimming instructor. Richard had a successful career swimming competitively in Germany and parlayed that skill into certification in 1968 as a water safety instructor, a trainer of lifeguards and teacher of swimming. He taught nights at Lancaster High School for over 30 years, specializing in turning water-phobic non-swimmers into swimmers. Well over 2,000 people can trace their swimming heritage to Richard. With Jean's death in 2001, Richard decided it was time for a change and retired to Albuquerque where two of his children had earlier transplanted. Drawn by the blue skies and warm days, Richard, always an outdoor enthusiast, flourished. Skiing at Sandia Peak and Taos, hiking the Sandias, roller blading, he did it all. He joined the Albuquerque Breakfast Civitan Club shortly after his arrival here and contributed to many projects, building wheelchair ramps, maintaining wagons and wheelchairs for rental at the State Fair and helping to maintain the booth there. Richard developed an interest in model trains in recent years and turned his backyard into a railroader's paradise. He was joined in this enthusiasm by his special friend, Judith Hatheway. Richard and Judith met at a church function six years ago and have been inseparable since. Richard is survived by his daughters, Marguerite Lappin and her husband, Allen of Albuquerque and Mary Ellen Lorenzo of Buffalo, NY; his son, Michael Stegmaier and his wife, Barbara of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Amanda Lorenzo of Buffalo, NY, Emily and Molly Lappin of Albuquerque, NM and Rachael Stegmaier of Albuquerque, NM. Richard is survived by nieces, Susan D'Anthony (Joseph) of Buffalo, NY and Noreen Javornik of MD; nephew, Dave Slowik (Charlene) of Buffalo. Richard is survived by cousins in Germany and countless friends made over the course of his long life. Richard is also survived by his friend and companion, Judith Hatheway of Albuquerque. The family wishes to thank Judith for the happiness she gave Richard the past six years. We thank all of you for the joy you brought to him. Richard loved life and lived it to its fullest and encouraged others to do the same. He will be missed. Friends may visit from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Thursday, March 29, 2012 at French Lomas. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 9:00 a.m. on Friday, March 30, 2012 at The Shrine of St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 11401 Indian School Road NE, Albuquerque, NM 87112. Interment will take place at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Contributions may be sent to a charity of your choice. Please visit our online guest book for Richard at www.RememberTheirStory.com.
