BALL -- Kevin C. Ball, age 53 of Albuquerque, NM passed away Thursday September 18, 2008. Kevin was born September 9, 1955 in Detroit, Michigan. Kevin married Cheryll Smith on May 17, 1980 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Kevin along with his wife operated Standard Machine Co. of Albuquerque, NM since 1989. In 2002, they were the recipients of the Ethics in Business Award. In his spare time, Kevin enjoyed Jeeping, Fly Fishing, Electronic Gadgets but more importantly spending time with his daughter Amanda and his wife. He was happiest when surrounded by his family and friends. Surviving are his wife of 28 yrs. Cheryll; daughter Amanda Ball attending college in Olympia, WA; his brother, Jim Ball of Albuquerque, NM; two sisters, Wendy Reary and her husband Dave and their son, Sam, of Saint Louis, Missouri, and Sue Chura of Michigan. According to his wishes cremation has taken place and a private family gathering will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Shriners, Ballut Abyad Perpetual Fund P.O. GERKEN -- Mary Margaret (Boehning) Gerken, 86, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque passed away on Saturday, September 20, 2008. She is survived by her children Gerry Gerken (Dr.), Janis Wood and husband David, Linda Maybury and husband Rick, Carol Henry, Mark Gerken, Jean Bussemeier and husband Mark and Mathew Gerken; grandchildren Adam Gerken, Erica Voges, (Ph.D), Kevin Henry M.D., Eric Henry, Sarah Henry and Chandra Gerken; great grandson, Bram Gerken; brother, Joe Boehning and various nieces and nephews. Mary Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Don. She attended Monte Vista Elementary School and St. Mary's School and graduated St. Vincent's Academy. She dedicated her life to her family whom she loved very much. She is deeply loved and will be greatly missed. A Prayer Service will be held on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, Wyoming Chapel. Her children invite family and friends to attend a reception in her honor at Risen Savior Catholic Community following the Prayer Service. LOPEZ -- Veneranda "Landa" Lopez went with the Lord September 20, 2008 in Albuquerque at the age of 67. She will be greatly missed. Mrs. Lopez is survived by her husband, Emilio Lopez; daughter, Angela Dominguez and husband, Frank; sons, Joseph Lopez, James Lopez and wife, Karen, Jerry Lopez and wife, Michelle; sisters, Jane Telles, Lorraine Nieto and husband, Steve, Helen Chavez and husband, Joe, Juanita Sandoval, and Roseann Chavez; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation for Mrs. Lopez will be held on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 and Wednesday, September 24, 2008 from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Salazar & Sons Mortuary. NICHOLS -- M.L. (Nick) Nichols, 91, long-time resident of Belen, passed away on September 8, 2008 at his home in Pupukea, HI. He grew up in Wellington, KS, and came to Belen in 1941 where he was employed by the AT&SF Railroad as an engineer until his retirement in 1981. Nick was a Ford enthusiast, who delighted in restoring vintage Fords, and was a member of the Poco Quatros Model A Ford Club, and the Tumbleweed V8 Club. He was an able mechanic and craftsman, loved working with his hands, and never met a challenge too difficult to tackle. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Belen, attended North Shore Christian Fellowship in Haleiwa, HI, and was a member of Bethlehem Lodge No. 56, Masonic Lodge, Jessamine Chapter No. 45 of the Eastern Star, and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. He is survived by his wife Lois, of Pupukea, HI; sister Dorothy Troutman of Wellington, KS; daughter (from a previous marriage) Tharan Schmidt and husband Virgil of Wichita, KS, daughters Pam Steinberg and husband Steve of Monument, CO, Penny King and husband Bob of Pupukea, HI; sons Pat Nichols and wife Robyn of Salamander Bay, NSW Australia, Pete Nichols and wife Carrie of Wailuku, HI; grandchildren Marty Ternes, Michelle Hawk, Cindy Perez, Robin Sneary, Kathy Reynoldson, David Ternes, Nicole Ellis, Jennifer Hefty, Scott Steinberg, Donovan Steinberg, Jackson King, Jillian King, Jarin Williamson, Jesse King, Kearney Nichols, Zack Nichols, Naphtali Kern, Carlee Nichols, Manasseh Nichols; 16 great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend and will be greatly missed. A Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. on October 7, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church of Belen, 75 Manzano Expressway. OLMSTED -- Georgette H. Olmsted, born April 2, 1932 in Yverdon, Switzerland, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, September 19, 2008. She immigrated to the United States in 1954 and after a few years of extensive travel around the world, she married and moved to New Mexico in 1958. It was in Santa Fe where she raised her family. She was preceded in death by her son, Gregory Olmsted who died in 1986. She is survived by: John Olmsted and his wife Una, Michelle Olmsted and her fiance Michael, Anick Olmsted, Brian Nelson, his wife Tracy and their daughter Elizabeth, her grand dogs Ulee, Emma and Ella, and numerous friends and family including her adopted daughter Michelle Whiffen, her husband Doug, and their sons Matthew, Conner and Sam. We know Georgie is surrounded by all her family and friends who have gone before. We also hope Georgie has a pocket full of treats for all the furry four-legged friends who are surely there to greet her. Brief graveside services will be held Thursday, September 25, 2008, at 11:00 a.m., at Santa Fe Memorial Gardens, 417 Rodeo Road in Santa Fe. RANEY -- Mary Jane Raney, age 79, of Albuquerque, passed away Saturday, September 20, 2008. She was born June 12, 1929 in Effingham, IL to Aloysius and Gertrude Fruchtl. She married James Joseph Raney on June 20, 1953 in Effingham, IL and he preceded her in death on January 31, 2006, after 53 yrs. of marriage. SOTO -- Mabel Soto, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away Friday, September 19, 2008 at the age of 91. Mabel retired from Parkview Baptist Church after 29 years of service. She also worked for St. Anthony's Home for Boys until its closing. Mrs. Soto was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Soto. She is survived by her two brothers, David and Joe Madrid; her four sons, Roland Soto, Oliver and his wife Bea, Ricarte and his wife Susie, Paul and his wife Dolores; one daughter, Louise Padilla and her husband Robert; 19 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; other family members and friends who loved and will miss her. Visitation and a Celebration of Life will be held at Glory Christian Fellowship, 2421 Wyoming NE., on Wyoming two blocks north of Menaul, Wednesday, September 24, 2008. SPENCER -- Carol Rosalie Spencer, 70, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, died Friday, September 19, 2008 in her home. She is survived by four children, Robert Spencer and wife, Laura of Bloomfield, NM, Dennis Spencer of Albuquerque, Wendy Spencer of Albuquerque, and Susan Brace and husband, Robert of Los Lunas; ten grandchildren and one great-grandbaby; one sister, Joan Ellis and husband, Richard of Hereford, TX; two brothers, John Goats and wife, Trish of Pemberton, British Columbia. and Henry Lee Goats Jr. and wife, Louise of Hope, British Columbia; plus many nieces, nephews, friends, and her beloved dog, Miss Rosie. Carol started work at Sandia National Laboratories in 1974 and retired in 2003. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew her. WHALEN -- William Murray (Bill) Whalen, 81, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 19, 2008. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Jean Whalen of Albuquerque; four children, Nancy Whalen, Tom and Rita Whalen, Bill and Missy Whalen, all of Albuquerque, and Patty and Ken Morris of Plano, TX. He was blessed with 12 grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Muriel Whalen of Butte, MT. An Albuquerque resident since 1959, Bill was born in Seattle, WA and was raised in Butte. Following service in the United States Army during World War II, he earned a degree from St. Thomas College in St. Paul, MN in Accounting and Business Administration. He began his career working with the National Cash Register Company in Butte, Seattle and Las Vegas, NV. He was subsequently employed by Sandia National Laboratories, retiring after twenty years in 1982, enjoying 28 years of happy and productive retirement. Bill was a member of Our Lady of Annunciation Church for 17 years, and Church of the Risen Savior for over 30 years. Much of his time was spent volunteering with various charitable organizations including Civitan, Catholic Charities, the Women's Coalition, the Assistance League, Act On Society, and Right to Life. He and Jean have enjoyed traveling and membership in the Thunderbirds and Siglo de Oro RV Clubs, and spending time with family and friends. He will be remembered for his amazing energy, sharp mind, optimism, keen sense of humor, willingness to help anyone in need, and generosity of his time and talent. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends who knew and loved him. Rosary will be recited on Thursday, September 25, 2008, at 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel.
