ANDERSON -- Viola Phelps Anderson, 90, died on Thursday, August 30, 2007 at her home in Albuquerque. Mrs. Anderson was born March 26, 1917 at her maternal grandparent's homestead near Flasher, ND, to Clyde and Elsie (Johnson) Phelps. She was the eldest of seven children. She grew up in North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota. Mrs. Anderson graduated from Flasher, ND High School in 1935. In 1946 she became a widow with two young daughters to raise. She was left to operate the family business and in doing so she became first woman in the state of North Dakota to obtain a license as a motion picture projectionist. Mrs. Anderson also taught grades one through eight in a rural North Dakota Schoolhouse. In 1962 she married James D. Anderson in Tacoma, WA, where they resided until they retired to Albuquerque in 1991. She was very active in her church, Immanuel Presbyterian, where she was a deaconess. Mrs. Anderson was a 60-year member of the Eastern Star and a Past Worthy Matron; a recorder for Daughters of the Nile, and a Past Noble Grand of the Rebekahs. She was also an avid bridge player and enjoyed traveling. She is survived by her husband, James D. Anderson of Albuquerque; two daughters, Joan Siburg of Puyallup, WA, and Carolyn Stewart and husband, John of Grand Island, NE; sister, Ruth Ferguson and husband, Richard of Yakima, WA; brother, Wendell Phelps and wife, Ione of Phoenix, AZ; sister-in-law, Mrs. June Madlener of Albuquerque; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; 11 nephews; six nieces; and several grand-nieces, nephews; and seven foster children. Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, September 4, 2007, 2:00 p.m., at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 114 Carlisle Blvd. SE. Interment will take place in Flasher, ND. Cremation has taken place. BIERSTEIN -- John Robert Bierstein, 100, a resident of Albuquerque, NM for 22 years, died August 28, 2007 at La Vida Llena Retirement Center, Albuquerque. He is survived by his two daughters, Anne Grenfell of Westminster, MD and Susan Director of Leesburg, VA; three grandchildren, Jennifer Boniface of Temple Hills, MD, April Newton of Havre de Grace, MD, and Benjamin Finzel of Washington, D.C.; and three great-grandchildren, Jenna, Jeffrey, and Gunnar Newton of Havre de Grace, MD. Mr. Bierstein, a native of Pennsylvania, graduated from Temple University in Philadelphia, did graduate work at the Pennsylvania School of Social Work, and was a member of the National Association of Social Workers. He began his career as a social worker in the Pennsylvania State Welfare Services. He retired from a 38-year career with the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole where he had been Director of Probation Services from 1956-1971. For 21 years, Mr. Bierstein was also a lecturer on parole at the State Police Academy in Hershey, PA and he taught part-time in the correctional field at Harrisburg Area Community College. Mr. Bierstein served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of St. Chad's Episcopal Church in Albuquerque, the American Legion Post #49, and President of the Residents' Association at La Vida Llena from 1987-1989. A Memorial Service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 31, 2007 at Carter Hall, La Vida Llena Retirement Center. Interment will be at Santa Fe National Cemetery. BOND -- Joleen Marie Bond, died on Monday, August 27, 2007 in Tucson, AZ. She was born December 1, 1988 in Albuquerque. Joleen spent her young life in Northfield, OH. She attended high school in Nordonia, OH and graduated in 2007. Joleen worked at the Nordonia Best Buy as a sales associate. She is survived by her parents, Amy and Eric Bond of Northfield, OH; brothers, Travis and Jason Scholer of Las Vegas, NV; grandparents, Jim and Eleanor Caughren of Albuquerque; Karen Bond and Bill Standerwick of Rio Rancho and Wayne and Melissa Bond of Albuquerque; and numerous other relatives and friends. CHAVEZ -- Amarante "Monty" Chavez, age 87, passed into the loving arms of our Lord Jesus Christ on Tuesday, August 28, 2007. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Lucy; one daughter; two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren. He is survived by his children, Genieva Ronan (Frank), Josie Brown (Ray), Norman Chavez (Irene), Chico Chavez (Veronica), Pat Chavez (Dolores), Daniel Chavez and Rachel Vigil. Also four grandchildren he raised, Ben Garcia (Janice), Michael Garcia (Charlotte), Richard Garcia (Diane) and Tina Garcia. He is also survived by his brother, Bernardino Chavez and sister, Eva Sandoval. He was blessed to have 26 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren. He was a wonderful father and grandfather and will be greatly missed. DUARTE -- Jane Duarte passed away on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 in Las Cruces at the age of 52. Jane leaves behind her husband, Fred, of Las Cruces; son, Danny Roybal and wife, Patricia of Albuquerque; and daughter, Angela Roybal of Las Cruces. EDWARDS -- Joseph P. Edwards, age 72, of Albuquerque, passed away Wednesday, August 29, 2007 at a local hospital. He was born February 17, 1935 in Tupelo, MS to Joseph O. Edwards and Ollie Mae Hunt. He married Edith B. Schon on May 12, 1956 in Germany. Mr. Edwards was a retired veteran of the United States Army Special Forces, he served during Vietnam receiving two bronze stars. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Edith B. Edwards of Albuquerque; his daughter, Darleene K. Edwards and her husband, Anthony J. Giancola; his sons, Larry A. Edwards, Gary B. Edwards and his wife, Karen J., all of Albuquerque, Terry R. Edwards and his wife, Debra S. of Tupelo, MS; and his grandchildren, Holly N. Edwards, Nicholas L. Jackson and Robert K. GRIFFITH -- Richard D. Griffith (Dick) 80, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, died at home on Friday, August 24, 2007 following his battle with cancer. Richard was a veteran of both WWII and the Korean War. He was a member of the New Mexico Faceters Guild and enjoyed creating jewelry. Among his other interests were wine making, flying, sky diving, bridge, and golf. He leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Katherine Marchant Griffith, and three children: a daughter, Donna and husband, Perry Skufis of Florence, KY; a son, Mike and wife, Linda Griffith of Winchester, CA and their children, Christina, Michelle, Tim and Rebecca, and one great-grandson, Dylan; a son, James and wife, Renee Griffith of Lake Jackson, TX and their sons, Brenden and Kristopher; two biological sisters, Gatha Williams of Braham, MN and Glenna Ulseth and husband, Ed of Akron, OH; two half brothers, Bob Marshall and his wife, Debbie and Bill Marshall and his wife, Faye; and many cousins. Richard was preceded in death by his biological parents, Forest and Mattie Marshall of Valley Head WV, and his adopted parents, Pop and Della Griffith of Elkins, WV, where Richard was born. He always wanted to come out west and moved to Albuquerque after graduating college in 1955 with his wife, Katherine and daughter. He worked for 32 years at Sandia National Laboratory until his retirement in 1988. His wish was to be cremated and a family memorial will be held at a later date. HOWELL -- James Craig Howell November 11, 1980 - August 29, 2007 The world has lost a shining light, heaven is one star brighter. Jimmy Howell was born in Glendale California, lived three years in Tennessee and grew up in Placerville California after his family moved back West. At the age of 20 he enlisted in the United State Air Force. He felt honored to serve his country, he was a true American. Jim was stationed in Albuquerque and loved it here so much that he purchased his first home. He received his Bachelor's Degree from The College of Santa Fe in 2005 and in June 2007 he received his Master's from The University of Phoenix. Jimmy convinced his little brother to move here and share his home with him, as the two were not only brothers, but best friends. A year later his mom and step-dad followed from California to be near the boys. Jimmy was a 'people magnet'. He loved his Lord Jesus, he loved his family and friends, he served in Sunday school at his church Hoffmantown, he helped everyone he could by giving to those in need or taking people in who had no place to go. Jimmy was the epitome of unselfish love. His gifts to this world will be sorely missed. Jimmy is survived by his mother, Barbara Tankersley and his stepdad, Tom Tankersley; his father, Craig Howell and his stepmom, Therese Howell; his grandma, Irene Bailey; his brothers, Jason Howell, Troy Tankersley, Charles Greco, and Shawn Harry; sisters, Theresa Greco, Angie Harry, Megan McNamara, and Ali McNamara; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends who were family to Jimmy. KLOSS -- MARGARET L. Mrs. Margaret L. Kloss, 89, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on August 29, 2007. Mrs. Kloss is survived by her four loving children, Glenn Kloss and wife, Shirley, Randolph Kloss and wife, Barbara, Gary Kloss and wife, Cindy, and Margaret Kloss; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephew, cousins, and friends. Mrs. Kloss was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, Mr. Glenn B. MARTINEZ -- Rose Martinez, 83, resident of Albuquerque, died Wednesday, August 29, 2007. She is survived by her daughters, Virginia Woodward and husband, Grant, of Dana Point, CA, and Julianne Leighty of Ft. Worth, TX; sons, Ronald Martinez and wife, Suzy, of Chandler, AZ, and Eugene Martinez and wife, Anita, of Minneapolis, MN; grandchildren, Brett and Ryan Woodward, and Tamara Basford and Megan Leighty; sisters, Frances Chacon, Vi Wilson, Connie Pacheco, and Lucia Arellano; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred G. Martinez; parents, Manuel and Anita Rael; and sisters, Teddy Garcia, and Lupita Garcia. Rose was born in Arroyo Hondo, NM. MCCULLOUGH -- Malcolm Alfred McCullough Sr. A Memorial Service for Malcolm McCullough Sr. was held August 14, 2007 at the Shelton Funeral Home Chapel in Decatur, Alabama. Mr. McCullough passed away Saturday, August 11, 2007 at the Parkway Medical Center. Malcolm was born February 10, 1921 in New Orleans, LA to Malcolm Alfred McCullough and Mildred Frances Kehl. He was a graduate of Mississippi State. He worked with photography, audio/visual and motion pictures for 24 years while serving his country in the U.S. Air Force and spent another 20 years doing the same work in civil service. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Margaret Frances McCullough; sons, Malcolm Jr. and Rodney McCullough; daughters, Janet Murphy, Janie Fletcher, Millie Achramovitch, Patricia Alexander and Kelly Murphy, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Malcolm and Margaret resided in Albuquerque from 1979 to 1994 (for 15 years). Malcolm was a loving, devoted husband, father and friend to all. He will be truly missed and remembered dearly in all our hearts.

MEASE -- Marie E. Mease, went to be with her Lord, August 27, 2007. Born in Erie, PA, June 21, 1913, she was preceded in death by her devoted husband Jack Mease. Marie found her true calling in life as an outstanding homemaker, mouth-watering baker, perfect hostess and a fierce bridge player. She was a constant companion to her husband as she followed him on many Tours of Duty. She never had an unkind word for anyone, was loved by all and will be greatly missed. Her family was truly blessed with her love for them. MONTOYA -- Della H. Montoya, 85, a lifelong resident of Grant County, now a resident of Las Cruces, entered eternal rest Thursday, August 30, 2007 at Desert Willow at Northrise Nursing Home in Las Cruces, NM. She was born January 29, 1922 in Hurley, NM to Ramon Hernandez and Nemecia Trujillo. She was married to Don C. Montoya for 65 years; who preceded her in death December 24, 2005. She was an instrument of peace and support for her husband, children, and grandchildren. She was a successful gardener; will be remembered for her gifts of masterful crocheting pieces and her specialized New Mexican cuisine. She was an avid reader and talented artist. She will be missed dearly by her family. She is survived by one son, Dr. Donald H. Montoya and his wife, Kim of Silver City; one daughter, Betty Jane Burlingame of Las Cruces; seven grandchildren, Stephen Montoya, Deborah Chase, Sean Montoya, Deidre Shonk, Dominque Montoya, Jessica and Alex Hallwyler; six great-grandchildren, Breanna, Paige, Amber, Oliver, Grace, and Oskar. Mrs. Montoya was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Mary Montoya (1952). SWANSON -- Kenneth Lyle Swanson, born April 4, 1940 in Dagus Mines, PA, died August 29, 2007 in Bozeman, MT. Kenneth Swanson has won victory over death in the loving arms of his savior Jesus Christ. Kenneth retired from Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, NM in 1993 after 32 years. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Swanson in MT; mother, Mary Swanson in PA; mother-in-law, Loretta Baum in MT; son Arrick and Bonnie Swanson in MT, son, Aaron and Debra Swanson in TX; daughter, Tamela Swanson in MI; six grandchildren (Kenneth, Lyle, Austin, Mason, Rachael and Marion); and one great-granddaughter (Leyah). The joy of Ken's life has always been family. He also enjoyed fishing and reading. His gift was in sharing his love of God and family through Marriage Encounter. TORRES -- Roger Torres went home Friday, August 31, 2007, surrounded by his loving family. He was a prolific artist and loved by many. Roger was preceded in death by his mother, Josephine Bird and brother, Michael Bird.
