ABBIN -- Thomas John Abbin, Sr., 60, a life long resident of Albuquerque, died Sunday, May 16, 2004. He is survived by his wife, Lonnie Abbin of Albuquerque; daughters, Barbara Abbin and Brenda Repichowski and husband, Joe of Albuquerque; son, Tommy Abbin and wife, Dianne of Rio Rancho; five grandchildren, and a brother, Joe Abbin of Albuquerque. Tom was a graduate of St. Pius X High School, class of 1962. He was an award winning retail store manager for Piggly Wiggly and later a top salesman for the McCormick Company. "Smiling Tom" as he was often called, was a hard working, dedicated family man who inspired trust and confidence in his family, friends and co-workers. ANAYA -- Valentin "Tiny" Anaya, 63, passed away at UNM Hospital in Albuquerque, NM on Friday, May 14, 2004 following an automobile accident. Tiny was born August 3, 1940 to Felipe and Maria Eslinda (Gonzales) Anaya in Socorro, NM. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Yvonne (Gallegos) Anaya of their home in Socorro; children: Valentin Jr. and wife, Gloria and their daughter, Elena; Sefie and fiance, Talitha; Manuel and wife, Magdalene and their three children, Julia, Manuel and Isaiah; and his only daughter, Eslinda; six brothers and three sisters and their families also survive him. Tiny dedicated his life in service to his Church and community. A devout Catholic, he served as an usher for the Old San Miguel Mission much of his adult life. A career public servant, he served as City Clerk for the City of Socorro under Mayor Tony Jaramilllo for many terms. Tiny was the Civil Defense Officer for Socorro County and most recently, he was serving his second term as Socorro County Assessor. He will be remembered most for his advocacy for the people of Socorro County, whether it be on a one-to-one basis, helping City or County employees with job concerns or lobbying in Santa Fe for any issue that would better the community. He was well known and well respected in Santa Fe, especially with his long-time friend, Governor Bill Richardson. Tiny touched many lives, as witnessed by the literally thousands of well wishers that have visited the family. He died just as he lived, on duty and in service to the people of Socorro County. A Rosary was recited on Monday, May 17, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. at the Old San Miguel Mission, 403 El Camino Real, Socorro, NM. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at San Miguel with Father John C. Daniel as Celebrant. Burial will be in the San Miguel Cemetery. Pallbearers are his brothers: Paul Anaya, Louis Anaya, Phillip Anaya, Narciso Anaya, Gilbert Anaya and Leroy Anaya. BACA -- Frank S. Baca, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away on May 16, 2004, at the age of 78. He is survived by his wife, Rose G. Baca, with whom he had 63 years of marriage; his children, Rick Baca, (Edie), Patrick Baca, (Lupe), Johnny Baca, (Betty), and Victoria Paulos; his brother, Willy Baca, and twelve grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one great-grandchild, Boo-Boo. Frank retired from the Bureau of Reclamation after thirty years of service. He was an avid dancer and enjoyed playing the accordion. BETTS -- Katherine E. Betts; 91 passed away at a local hospital on Sunday, May 16, 2004. Katherine a long time resident of Albuquerque is preceded in death by her husband, Ervin O. Betts and one grandchild, Patrick. Mrs. Betts is survived by her daughter, Norma Jean Whalen of Leesberg, Fl.; and son, Ervin Betts of Westport, Conn.; grandchildren, Tim Betts, Tim Whalen, Anna Louise Whalen, Emily Whalen-Wells, Kevin Whalen and Andrew Betts; great- grandchildren, Blair and Zoey Betts, Michaela Whalen, and Cambria and Max Wells. Katherine was a member of the First Christian Science Church. Mrs. Betts was an administrative assistant with the U. S. Navy in Rhode Island. BRYAN -- Captain George R.Bryan,Jr. USN, 83, passed away quietly on Tuesday May 11, 2004. George was born and raised in Cleveland,Ohio. He spent the last 32 years of his life as a resident of Albuquerque. He was proceded in death by his mother and father, Hazel and George Bryan Sr., and by his brothers, Jack and Dick and his sister, Betty. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jeanne Bryan; sons, Pat and Bill Bryan; daughter, Kathy Baldwin; and his grandson, Michael Baldwin. George attended Ohio University and the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD. He served his country as a naval officer for more than 30 years, seeing combat in both WWII and the Korean Conflict. More importantly, he served his fellow man everyday of his life - always giving far more than he took. There were no clouds in George's world - only silver linings. Every single person whose life was touched by George was better for that experience, from young sailors under his command to the countless charitable endeavors that he undertook to the widows at his church that he took grocery shopping. Devoted Catholic, father and husband, humanitarian, avid baseball fan, spinner of Irish jokes and stories, and purveyor of human joy, George would ask that we not grieve his passing but that we celebrate his life by helping others everyday of our own lives. Come visit George and say goodbye on Tuesday, May 18th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Fitzgerald and Sons Funeral Home, 3113 Carlisle NE. CORDOVA -- Maria Veneranda Cordova, age 89, passed away May 16, 2004 at the Laurel Meadows Nursing Home in Belen. Maria was born February 25, 1915 in Puerto De Luna, NM to the home of Marcelino and Doloritas Padilla Ocana. She was reared and attended schools in Puerto De Luna. Maria married Agapito Cordova on June 2, 1931 in Puerto De Luna. She and her husband made their home in Puerto De Luna where they farmed and ranched for many years. Maria was a member of Nuestra Senoria de Refugio Church in Puerto De Luna and St. Rose of Lima Church in Santa Rosa and the Sacred Heart Sodality. Maria loved to play bingo, scrabble and loved to go dancing with her husband Agapito. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Agapito, her son, Phil Cordova, her brothers and sisters, Charles Gerhardt, Jessie Gerhardt, Ben Gerhardt, Frank Ocana, Francisquita Luna, Isabel Abeyta and Juan Ocana. Survivors include her children, Orlando Cordova and wife, Louise of Phoeniz, AZ, Alfredo Cordova of Santa Rosa, Zulema Flores and husband, Santiago of Phoenix, AZ, Robert Cordova and wife, Mary of Santa Rosa and Lucille Zamora and husband, Rudy of Belen; her sister, Teofila Lopez of Puerto de Luna. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchldren and four great-great- grandchildren along with numerous nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends. EICHWALD -- Max Eichwald, age 91 a resident of Pe¤asco and lifelong resident of Cuba, passed away on Sunday, May 16, 2004 following a short illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Aron (Augustine) and Isabel Eichwald; wife, Quirina Eichwald; daughters, Mariquita and Mary Louise Eichwald; sisters, Emma, Carmelita, Lucilla and Genoveva; brothers, Augustine and Bart. Mr. Eichwald was a member of the Senior Citizen group in Cuba and Chamisal. He was a champion pool player for the Senior Olympics, a Deputy Sheriff and was a Volunteer Fireman in Cuba. He served as an elder in the Cuba Presbyterian Church. He loved fishing and hunting. He loved to travel, he loved his wife dearly and they were great dancers. He attended Menaul School in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is survived by his daughter, Joanna Valerio and husband, Eloy of Ranchos de Taos, Esther Martinez and husband, Roberto "Tony" of Cuba and Laura Eichwald of San Diego, California; sons, Aaron Eichwald and wife, Roselyn of Peasco and Eric Eichwald and wife, Sherri of Los Lunas; sister, Ida Valdez of Cuba; brother, Alex Eichwald and wife, Serafina of Corrales; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren along with numerous other relatives and friends. GARCIA -- Trinidad Garcia, 97, passed away on May 14, 2004. Trinidad was born and raised in Magdalena, NM. She attended Loretto School in Las Cruces, NM and later attended Stanford University graduating cum laude. She is preceded in death by her father, Lorenzo Garcia and mother, Encarnacion Garcia; four sisters; one brother; and one nephew. She is survived by one nephew, Frank Howard, a host of cousins, and long time friends Mary and Prentis Jones. She taught high school in Magdalena, and elementary school in Socorro. Trini was an avid crossword puzzle solver and enjoyed traveling. A Rosary will be held on Thursday, May 20, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary Magdalene Church, Magdalena, NM. GRISWOLD -- Gilbert Ripley Griswold, 92, a resident of Albuquerque, NM, died on Saturday, May 15, 2004 in La Vida Llena Health Care, in Albuquerque. Mr. Griswold is survived by daughters, Miriam Schroeder of San Diego, CA, Martha Griswold of Berkley, CA, and Annette Griswold of Greenbush, WI; four grandchildren; one great grandson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Laura Fast Griswold. Mr. Griswold was born in Greenport, NY on October 3, 1911, the middle son of Clyde and Grace Griswold. He moved to Raton, NM at the age of ten and had been a New Mexico Resident ever since. G.R. Griswold received two Bachelors of Science degrees from NM Tech in the fields of mining engineering and metallurgy. During the years of 1933-39, Mr. Griswold was a topographic engineer with the US Geological Survey, mapping rivers, dam sites, and reservoirs in NM, UT, ID and Montana, as an assayer. He went on to the university of Utah and earned a Master of Science. During World War II he served in the Army and was discharged a full colonel in the Army Reserve. Mr. Griswold was president of Chapman, Wood and Griswold, consulting mining engineers and geologists, with offices in Albuquerque, Africa, Australia, and Canada. HELMER -- Richard S. Helmer, passed away on Tuesday, May 11, 2004 due to complications of diabetes. He was 91 years of age. Surviving are his wife, Gertrude of Albuquerque; daughter, Peggy Forste of Golden City, MO, Delayne Lange of St. Louis, MO, and son Richard Helmer Jr. of St. Martin Island; ten grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. JARAMILLO-VARGAS -- Angie H., was born December 24, 1947. She went home to be with the Lord on May 16, 2004. Her sweet smile will be missed dearly. She is survived by her husband, Faustino (Tio Tino) Jaramillo; two daughters, Anna Instenes and husband, Shawn and Pauline Martinez; one son, Joseph Candelaria and nine grandchildren. Angie is also survived by her two brothers, Frank and Ernest Vargas; four sisters, Eleanor, Clara, Diana and Helen and by many other special relatives who also loved her dearly. PFEIFFER -- Susan Pfeiffer (Conner), 54, died on Saturday, May 15, 2004. She is survived by her husband, Bill Conner, of Algodones, NM; brother, Fred Pfeiffer and wife, Mary Kay, of Wichita, Kansas and many other family members. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Ruth Pfeiffer. Susan and Bill were married on November 21, 1980. Susan was a graduate of Michigan State University. She worked as a Girl Scout Camp Counselor for many years and was an office manager with CAMNET, Inc. for the past 5 years. Susan was a member of Desert Springs Church. QUILLEN -- Ida Marie Quillen, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend passed on to be with her Heavenly Father on Friday, May 14, 2004, in San Antonio, Texas, after a long and courageous battle with emphysema. Ida was born on December 8, 1926, on a farm near Hoxie, Kansas. Ida was the 13th of 14 children from the marriage of Alphonse and Ida Comeau. She graduated from the Girls Catholic High School in Hays, Kansas in 1945. Ida is survived by her husband, James R. Quillen. They were married on November 25, 1947 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays. Survivors also include daughters, Janis Brennan, Jayme Bundrant, and Jacqueline and husband, Ed Neidel; son, James II; 13 grandchildren, Timothy, Erin and husband, Chris Stewart, Kevin and Kerry Brennan, Lindsey and Abby Bundrant, Jennifer, Jeffrey and wife Kimberly, Joel and John Neidel, Tarin, Matthew and Amanda Quillen; sister, Rosemary Karlin and husband, Art; brother, George Comeau and many nieces, nephews and friends. Ida and Jim Quillen lived in Albuquerque for 38 years and consider it their home. When I am gone, release me, let me go... I have so many things to see and do. ROBENS-NING -- Christine Robens-Ning, 54, of Albuquerque passed away Sunday, May 16, 2004, after a nine month battle with cancer. She was born on Tuesday, May 16, 1950. She is survived by her husband of 19 years, Jimmy Ning; daughters, Jennifer Vallejos and husband, Alex Jr. and Kari Howell and husband, Zack; stepchildren, Natasha and Jason Ning; mother, Evelyn Carlson; siblings, Bill Robens and wife, Kathryn, Bob Robens, Kathy Robens and husband, David Goldman, and Susan Brannon; in-laws, Mary Chang, Vickie Tusiri, Judy Parnell, David Ning and partner, Elaine Lehmann, Mike Ning and partner, Sherry Jones and Jack and wife, Judie Ning; grandsons, Mateo and Adelicio Vallejos; her close family included, Francis and Susie Chang, Peter and Isabel Chang, many other nieces, nephews and cousins as well as her good friends, Frank and Kathleen Marchi. SAIZ -- Mr. Eusivio T. Saiz, 78, a resident of Albuquerque passed away on May 16,2004. Mr. Saiz is the beloved husband of 52 years to Mrs. Lucille Saiz. SALIANI -- Anthony Saliani, 70, a resident of Albuquerque since 1975, passed away on May 15, 2004. He is survived by his wife of 45 years Jeanne of Albuquerque; son, Dean Saliani and Diane Chase of Peta Luma, CA; daughters, Raegina Naul and husband, J.C. of Lubbock, TX and Angela Vincent and husband, Duane of Le Compte, LA; brother, Frank Saliani and wife, Inathe of Brick, NJ; grandson, Bryan Naul of Lubbock, TX; granddaughters, Brittany Naul of Lubbock, TX and Nicole Vincent of Le Compte, LA. Anthony was a member of St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church. Rosary will be recited on Wednesday, at 7:00 p.m. at French Mortuary-Westside Chapel, 9300 Golf Course Rd. NW. A mass will be celebrated on Thursday, at 9:00 a.m. at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church, 5712 Paradise Blvd., NW with Father John Conway, celebrant. SCHIFANI -- Darlene Diane Schifani. Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Diane was born November 12, 1926 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and died May 14, 2004 of cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Orla Victoria and Clarence Elmer Anderson of Pipestone, Minnesota. Diane is survived by her husband, of 57 years Joseph Daniel Schifani; daughters, Pati Pfeil and husband, Robin Pfeil of Buffalo, N.Y., Cindi Schifani of Albuquerque; son, Ricky Schifani of Santa Fe; two grandchildren, Scott Pfeil and Kim (Pfeil) King, both of Buffalo; three great-grandchildren, Joey, Nick and Alyssa King of Buffalo and several other nieces and nephews. Serving as pallbearers will be Robin Pfeil, Scott Pfeil, John King, Larry White, Ron Jowers and Sonny Pate. Honorary pallbearer will be Ray Kuhn. Visitation will begin on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 6:00 p.m. where a rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. at Berardinelli Family Chapel (visitation hours will end at 9:00 p.m.). Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday, May 19, 2004, 10:00 a.m. at St. Francis Cathedral. Interment will follow at Rosario Cemetery. SPOOR -- Mark A. Spoor, 45, a resident of Albuquerque, died Sunday, May 16, 2004. He is survived by his wife, Wanda Spoor of Albuquerque; daughters, Krista Bennett and husband, Trevor of Albuquerque, Misty Spoor of Albuquerque; mother and step-father, Dottie and Barry Taschner of Scottsdale, AZ, step-mother, Carmen Spoor of Albuquerque; sisters, Robin Grandis of Scottsdale, AZ and Julie Cline of Albuquerque; brother, Joel Cline of Arizona; granddaughters, Morgan and Aspen Bennett of Albuquerque. Mark was co-owner of M & G Enterprises and a member of Promise Community Church. WALLS -- June P. Walls, age 78, a resident of Albuquerque since 1978, died on Saturday, May 15, 2004. She is survived by her daughter, Wendy Barton and husband, Cary, of Albuquerque; two sons, Glenn Wood, Gary Wood and wife, Susan, of Texas; two brothers, Geoffrey Parr and Bryan Parr, of England; 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; and a very dear friend, Louise Christopherson.
