BOYER -- Olga Boyer, 64, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, died Saturday, December 27, 2003. She is survived by her husband of 33 years, William Boyer, of Albuquerque; mother, Lidia Beltran; sisters Blanca Hasbun, Elena Mejia and husband Mauricio, Alicia Velasco and husband Antonio, Gladis Castillo and husband Roberto; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends. Mrs. Boyer attended The Shrine of St. Bernadette Catholic Church. She worked in real estate with Prime Realty and managed rental properties as well. Mrs. Boyer loved animals, especially her dogs, Smokey, Chico, Angel, and Fancy. She and Mr. Boyer enjoyed traveling together. Olga was very giving and often helped the elderly people she had met. Rosary will be recited Monday, December 29, 2003, at 7:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, Lomas Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE. CARTER -- John (Jack) Michael Carter, age 80, passed away December 26, 2003 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Mr. Carter was born August 22, 1923 in Bakersfield, California to Michael J. Carter and Susan Finnegan Carter. He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1941 in Los Angeles, California and joined the United States Navy in May of 1942- June 1946. During his time in the Navy he served aboard the USS Essex in the South and Central Pacific. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation, and eight Battle Stars. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church, life member of DAV. He was the organizer and International Representative for Machinist Union IAMAU until retiring in September of 1985. John was preceded in death by one daughter, Susan; and wife, Anita Palladino Carter. Survivors include one son, Michael Carter and wife, Regina of Phoenix, AZ; two daughters, Lorraine Carter of Albuquerque and Theresa Carter of Montgomery, AL; one brother, Thomas Carter of Santa Clarita, CA; two sisters, Mary Kearns of San Clemente, CA and Theresa Koenig of Newbury Park, CA; one grandson, Brian Carter; and one granddaughter, Elizabeth Carter. A Rosary will be held Monday, December 29, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. at Fitzgerald & Son Funeral Directors Chapel. CHAVEZ -- Lupe G. Chavez was born November 9, 1906 in New Mexico. She passed away Sunday, December 28, 2003 in Albuquerque. Lupe is preceded in death by her husband, Solomon Chavez; daughter, Priscilla Dauber; sister, Molly Tafoya; brother, Adolfo Majalca and wife, Celsa. She is survived by her children, Frances Romero and husband, Audie, Jacob Chavez and wife, Mercy, Bernie Chavez and wife, Eva, Peter Chavez and wife, Flora, Robert Chavez and wife, Flora, and Anna Maes; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; many other family and friends who loved and will miss her. CLARK -- Ramona "Rae" Sachs Clark, 89, was called home by our Lord and Savior on December 27, 2003. She was a good and honest person and will be missed. She is survived by five children: Pilar Sanchez, Angie Carlson and husband Rodger, Jerry Sanchez and wife Estelle, Milton Sanchez, and Patricia Flavian and husband Bill; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. For the last ten months Rae has been lovingly cared for at Wellesley Home Care, 3209 Wellesley Ct. NE in Albuquerque, NM 87107. As per Rae's wishes, cremation has taken place at Sunrise Funeral Options. DUPREY -- Paul Duprey, 76, passed away on Wednesday, December 24, 2003. Survivors include two daughters, Donna J. Gutierrez and husband, Robert of Albuquerque and Linda J. Perea and husband, Thomas of Bernalillo, NM; son, Robert A. Duprey and wife, Robin of Farmington, NM; three sisters, Bernice Pecor of Burlington, VT, Helen Duprey of Chicopee, MA and Gloria Beaudry of Clermont, FL; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by son, Timothy P. Duprey. Paul was a wonderful man with a great sense of humor. He was hardworking, honest and completely devoted to his children. He was always a caring and concerned father to his two girls. He enjoyed the warm and sunny weather in Florida, which was conducive to some of his favorite pastimes, which included fishing, golfing, watching wrestling, and telling jokes. He loved to watch movies and always knew dialogue. Paul has always had a special affection and place in his heart for Elizabeth Ankeney. Services will be held on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. in Palm Chapel of Strong-Thorne Mortuary, with Thomas Perea officiating. GARCIA -- Bernie J. Garcia was called to our Father's heavenly home on Monday, December 22, 2003. He is survived by his loving wife, Laura; sons, Bernie V and wife, MaryBeth of Taos, NM, Steve and wife, Linda of Lander, WY, Bill and a daughter, Loretta of Albuquerque; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter; three brothers, Robert, Richard, Ernest; and a sister, Irene. A special cousin, Lorraine and husband, Fred Baca; a special uncle, Sam and wife, Arcie Chavez; special friends, Mary and Phil Blea. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nevares and Martha Garcia. He served in the Air Force and was in the Berlin airlift in Germany. He retired from Kirtland Air Force Base. GIBBS -- Donald M. Gibbs, 92, passed away on December 27, 2003. A life long resident of New Mexico, Don was born on November 25, 1911 in Roy, territory of New Mexico. Mr. Gibbs is survived by his wife of 54 years Lola; sons Dr. Meyler Gibbs and wife Geri of Washington, Kansas, Brad of Albuquerque, two grandchildren, and a nephew Hank Wendland of Albuquerque. Donald is preceded in death by sister Dorothy Chauvenet and brother Meyler Gibbs. Mr. Gibbs served as a first class pharmacy mate in the U. S. Navy, South Pacific during World War II. Mr. Gibbs was owner operator of Gibbs Pharmacy and a licensed pharmacist for 50 years. HILL -- Ellen Juanita Hill, not a native but in her heart a true daughter of the state of New Mexico, passed away December 25, 2003. Ms. Hill was born July 3, 1924 at Norphlet, Arkansas. She was a writer and reporter for the United Press International, New Orleans, LA and numerous news papers and radio stations. She was a member of the University of New Mexico Alumni Association; various writers' guilds and was a swim instructor at the Red Cross. She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Andrus and a sister, Margaret. Her love continues in her sons, Marc Andrus of Austin, TX and Jeff Andrus of Santa Monica, Ca; sister, Imogene Ruth Hill; cousin, Virginia Hamner and one grandchild. LOFTIN -- Thelma Lois Loftin, 81, known as "Tee," a journalist and author who was a writer at the National Geographic Society, died of congestive heart failure on December 21 at her home in Santa Fe, NM. Ms. Loftin wrote the books Westward Go! (2000) and Contest for a Capital (1989), transcribed and edited Staying Alive in Alaska's Wild by Andy Nault (1980), and created maps of Washington, DC as it was in 1800 and in 1865. She published these through her company, Tee Loftin Publishers, as well as publishing the English edition of Irene?Peace (1979), a children's adaptation of the Aristophanes play, written and illustrated by Sophia Zarambouka. A native of Kinston, NC, Ms. Loftin held a Bachelor of Journalism degree from the University of Missouri (1942) and an M.A. in Journalism from American University in Washington, DC (1965). Ms. Loftin began her career as a writer for radio (KBWD in Brownwood, TX and KMOX in St. Louis, IL). In 1947 she moved to the Washington area, where her early positions included Washington Correspondent for the Kinston Daily Free Press, Press Assistant for Congressman Charles R. Jonas (R-NC), and Editor for the National Academy of Engineering. During the 1960's she was involved in television productions including the quiz show "It's Academic" (WRC-TV), and originated the children's television show "Claire and Coco," which was on the air from 1965-69 (WMAL-TV). She was also an active volunteer for the American Field Service and for the Washington, DC Parent Teacher Association, which awarded her a life membership. From 1967 until her retirement in 1987, Ms. Loftin worked at the National Geographic Society, as a Researcher and then Staff Writer in the Special Publications Division, and briefly for World Magazine. She wrote the book The Wild Shores: America's Beginnings (1974) and chapters for about a dozen other books published by the NGS. In researching the material for these books she traveled extensively and made friends around the world. Beginning in 1992 Ms. Loftin lived in Santa Fe, NM, where she developed a wide circle of friends. She was a member of the Unitarian Church and served on the Board of the Santa Fe Playhouse. Her husband from 1944 until their divorce in 1976, Edwin M. Snell, died in 1994. Survivors include two children, Suzanne Snell Tesh of Bethesda, MD, and James L. Snell of Seattle, WA; a brother, Leonard Loftin of Warsaw, NC; and three grandchildren. SMUDA -- Antoinette Rose Smuda, a resident of Albuquerque for the past 10 years, died on Sunday, December 28, 2003. Antoinette was born and raised in Chicago, IL, and married Frank A. Smuda in 1939. She lived in Crystal Lake, IL until 1958 and then moved to Phoenix, AZ, in where she resided for 35 years, then moving to Albuquerque in 1993. Antoinette is survived by her children, James F. Smuda of Albuquerque, Paul A. Smuda of Stevens Point, WI and Cathleen M. Hawes of Marianna, FL; 8 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Frank A. TOPE -- Dwight H. Tope, born August 29, 1918, died peacefully at home on December 25, 2003. He was born in Grand Junction, CO, to Richard and Elizabeth Tope. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carolyn Stagg Tope; son, Rock Tope and wife, Deborah; son, Col. Chris Tope and wife, Dolores; grandchildren, Michael and Susan Tope; sisters-in-law, Josephine Tope, Marjorie Tope and Marcia Cantrell; niece, Patty Clearman and husband, John; nephew, Michael Eddy and wife, Beth; niece, Carol Ramel, his primary caregiver; other dear relatives on his wife's side of the family; and many wonderful friends. He was one of the good guys and everybody loved him. Dwight was educated in Grand Junction and attended George Washington University in Washington, DC before entering the U.S. Army in 1941. He served as an artillery officer until separating from the service in 1945 as a major. Dwight owned his own insurance business, the Dwight Tope State Agency, until his retirement in 1987 and was active in the Scottish Rite Bodies of Santa Fe, Ballut Abyad Temple of the Shrine, and the Rotary Club of Albuquerque (Paul Harris Fellow). The family would like to thank the dedicated caregivers who helped Dwight, particularly Tina, Conner, Danny, Peggy, Susan and Diana. VALDEZ -- Mr. Luis J. Valdez, a resident of Fort Sumner, New Mexico moved to Albuquerque in 1981 passed away on December 28, 2003. Mr. Valdez is survived by his one sister, Esther V. Garcia; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mr. Valdez was a member of the Catholic Church and a Veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. A Visitation for Mr. Valdez will be Tuesday evening from 6:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 562 Atrisco SW with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. by Juan Sandoval.
