AFFELDT -- Mary Susan Affeldt, 76, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2003. Born July 12, 1927 to Hungarian immigrants, Paul and Susan Curtas, in Toledo, Ohio, Mary earned a Bachelor's degree and an M.B.A. from the University of Toledo. While studying, she served as Secretary to two Presidents of the University and married law professor, Robert J. Affeldt in 1959. Mary taught business courses for many years at Maumee High School in Maumee, Ohio and then served as Office Manager and paralegal for her husband's civil rights law firm in Sylvania, Ohio. There, they successfully prosecuted several class action discrimination cases on behalf of minorities and women against some of the country's largest companies, including McDonald's, Jeep Corporation, and Owens-Corning Fiberglass. After retiring and moving to Albuquerque with her husband in 1991, Mary became active in the local community, serving as Secretary to the Academy Park Homeowners' Association, a representative on the District 4 Neighborhood Coalition, a member of Albuquerque's Peace and Social Justice Commission, and an active member of the Aquinas Newman Center at UNM. Mary is survived by her husband, Robert; daughter, Elizabeth of Santa Fe; son, John and his wife, Karen Hoy, of Emeryville, California; son Robert, Jr., of Edinburgh, Texas; & sister, Helen Bordner of Toledo, Ohio. A funeral mass will be held Mon., Dec. 29, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at the Aquinas Newman Center, 1815 Las Lomas, NE,with reception for family & friends to follow.

AKEY -- Mary M. Akey, 67, a resident of Albuquerque since 1968 died from complications of Multiple Sclerosis with her family at her bedside on December 27, 2003. She is survived by her husband of 47 years Allen P. Akey; son, Gary A. Akey and wife Susan of Little Elm, Texas; daughter, Connie M. Foshee and husband Tim of Fayetteville, Arkansas; grandsons, Dr. Chris L. Akey and wife Taisa of Elkins, Arkansas; Peter J. Akey of Charlottesville, Virginia; Kenneth B. Biesterveld of Fayetteville, Arkansas; Thomas A. Akey of Hamilton, Ohio and Jeffrey James Byrd of Little Elm, Texas; great-granddaughter, Maria Luisa P. Akey; great-grandson Noah P. Akey both of Elkins, Arkansas; grand-dogs Luc, Mandy, Bryndle, B.J. and grand-cat, Ivy. Mary is the youngest of 13 children of a well established dairy farm family in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. She is survived by 8 brothers and sisters. Cremation has taken place. Interment of cremains will be at a later date in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. BEWLEY -- Troy D. Bewley, 77, a resident of New Mexico since 1958, died Tuesday morning, December 23, 2003. Troy was born in Foss, Oklahoma on May 12, 1926. Troy is survived by sons Robert Bewley and Tim Bewley; daughter Marilyn Johnson; three grandchildren, Bradley Kistler, Matthew Bewley and Kayla Severin and brothers Royce Bewley, and sister Treva Hill of Albuquerque. Troy was preceded in death by daughter Kathy Austin and infant grandson Clay Bewley. Troy served in the U.S. Army from November 1944 to November 1946 in infantry and Medical Corps. He worked as a NC Machinist for Sandia Laboratories, retiring on January 31, 1984 after 25 years of service. He was a member of the machinist union. Troy was also a lifetime member of Trail Riders Horse Club where he served as the arena director. A visitation will be held on Monday, December 29, 2003 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Strong-Thorne Mortuary. BOYER -- Olga Boyer, 64, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, died Saturday, December 27, 2003. She is survived by her husband of 33 years, William Boyer, of Albuquerque; mother, Lidia Beltran; sisters Blanca Hasbun, Elena Mejia and husband Mauricio, Alicia Velasco and husband Antonio, Gladis Castillo and husband Roberto; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends. Mrs. Boyer attended The Shrine of St. Bernadette Catholic Church. She worked in real estate with Prime Realty and managed rental properties as well. Mrs. Boyer loved animals, especially her dogs, Smokey, Chico, Angel, and Fancy. She and Mr. Boyer enjoyed traveling together. Olga was very giving and often helped the elderly people she had met. CARTER -- John (Jack) Michael Carter, age 80, passed away December 26, 2003 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Mr. Carter was born August 22, 1923 in Bakersfield, California to Michael J. Carter and Susan Finnegan Carter. He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1941 and join the United States Navy in May of 1942- June 1946. During his time in the Navy he served aboard USS Essex in the South and Central Pacific. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation, and 8 Battle Stars. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church, live member of DAV. He was the organizer and International Representative for Machinist Union IAMAU until retiring in September of 1985. John was preceded in death by one daughter Susan and wife Anita Palladino Carter. Survivors include one son Michael Carter and wife Regina of Phoenix, AZ; two daughters Lorraine Carter of Albuquerque and Theresa Carter of Montgomery, AL; one brother Thomas Carter of Santa Clarita, CA; two sisters Mary Kearns of San Clemente, CA and Theresa Koenig of Newbury Park, CA; one grandson Brian Carter and one granddaughter Elizabeth Carter. CLARK -- Ramona "Rae" Sachs Clark, 89, was called home by our Lord and Savior on December 27, 2003. She was a good and honest person and will be missed. She is survived by five children: Pilar Sanchez, Angie Carlson and husband Rodger, Jerry Sanchez and wife Estelle, Milton Sanchez, and Patricia Flavian and husband Bill; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. For the last ten months Rae has been lovingly cared for at Wellesley Home Care, 3209 Wellesley Ct. NE in Albuquerque, NM 87107. As per Rae's wishes, cremation has taken place at Sunrise Funeral Options. EGGER -- Hazel M. Egger, 89, a resident of Farmington, NM for 14 years and a former resident of Albuquerque, NM for 45 years, died Thursday, December 25, 2003. She is survived by son, John Hamilton and wife, Darline of Cortez, CO; daughter, Margaret Lightle and husband, Mark of Farmington, NM; 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Hazel was preceded in death by husband, Edwin T. Egger and son, Sgt. Richard Hamilton. She retired from Levi Strauss in 1973. GIBBS -- Donald M. Gibbs, 92, passed away on December 27, 2003. A life long resident of New Mexico, Don was born on November 25, 1911 in Roy, territory of New Mexico. Mr. Gibbs is survived by his wife of 54 years Lola; sons Dr. Meyler Gibbs and wife Geri of Washington, Kansas, Brad of Albuquerque, two grandchildren, and a nephew Hank Wendland of Albuquerque. Donald is preceded in death by sister Dorothy Chauvenet and brother Meyler Gibbs. Mr. Gibbs served as a first class pharmacy mate in the U. S. Navy, South Pacific during World War II. Mr. Gibbs was owner operator of Gibbs Pharmacy and a licensed pharmacist for 50 years. HOGSETT -- Clara W. Hogsett, 92, a longtime resident of the Quemado area, died Sunday, December 28, 2003. Clara is survived by her daughters, Ida Belle Davis and husband, Tom, Naomi Haynes and husband, Gene all of Albuquerque and Barbara Adams and husband, Burl of Quemado; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Gordon Woods of Bentonville, AR; sisters, Agatha Davis of Chester, AR, and Lillian Denton and husband, Dale of Wichita, KS; and numerous other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Hogsett in 1973 and her granddaughter, Twuana Haynes. Clara and her husband, Joe were longtime ranchers. She was a master quilter and loved cooking and gardening. She was a member of Quemado Presbyterian Church and the Quemado Senior Citizens organization. JONES -- Thomas D. Jones was born on December 3, 1930 in Enid, Oklahoma and died on December 23, 2003 in Peoria, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Howard and mother, Lillian E. MacDonald Jones. Tom served in the Korean War as a Marine. He attended UNM where he played basketball and baseball. In 1953 he married Sue Cooper and they had a daughter, Julie of Albuquerque. They divorced in 1953. Tom worked as a sales engineer for 31 years with General Electric. He married Judith Walton in 1989. After they both retired, they began wintering in Phoenix. The lives he touched were many. Tom had many friends through his business and golf and horse racing activities. Special friends include, Bernie Buhr, Bob Davis, Bob D'lamater, Harry Gamblin, Gary Gross, Monte Newson, Ray Polanis, Bob Rodgers, Bob Tiano, Russ Walker and numerous others. Tom will be remembered as a caring, fun loving, quick-witted person. He is survived by his French Poodle, Sunny; wife, Judith; daughter, Julie; brother, Walter Mac Jones and wife, Betty of Lawton, Oklahoma. LUCERO -- Aurelia H. Lucero, 70, was born March 24, 1933 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and passed away peacfully, surrounded by her family after a brave battle with cancer in her home on December 26, 2003. She was a life-long resident of New Mexico. Helen was a devoted member of Immaculate Conception Church in Albuquerque. She was preceded in death by her parents, Pablo and Eufracia Lucero. She is survived by her daughter, Christine L. Lucero, grandchildren, Josh and Dominic Gallegos, Tara and Jude Sanchez, sisters, Rose Sanchez and husband Abran, Carol Sanchez and husband Jake, Julia Lopez, Dina Atler and Theresa Gabaldon and husband Pete, brothers, Paul Lucero and wife Clara, Julian Lucero and wife Stella, many nieces and nephews and many friends whom she touched with kindness and friendship. Helen will always be remembered for her friendship, thoughtfulness, kindness, unselfishness and great love for her grandchildren of whom she was so very proud of. Helen will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her and will be loved always. A Mass will be celebrated, beginning with a rosary on December 30, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 619 Copper Avenue NW with Father Louis Lambert, SJ presiding. SMUDA -- Antoinette Rose Smuda, a resident of Albuquerque for the past 10 years, died on Sunday, December 28, 2003. Antoinette was born and raised in Chicago, IL, and married Frank A. Smuda in 1939. She lived in Crystal Lake, IL until 1958 and then moved to Phoenix, AZ, in where she resided for 35 years, then moving to Albuquerque in 1993. Antoinette is survived by her children, James F. THORNE -- George Orr Thorne, 86, a long time resident of Albuquerque, died Thursday, December 25, 2003. He is survived by his sisters-in-law, Mildred Furlough of Virginia Beach, VA and Dorothy Joyner of Taverres, FL and several nieces and nephews. George was a play by play Baseball announcer, and owned and operated his own diner. He worked at Sandia National Laboratories in the security department, where he retired. George was a member of the Masonic Lodge and he served his country in the Army Air Corp during WWII. TOPE -- Dwight H. Tope, born August 29, 1918, died peacefully at home on December 25, 2003. He was born in Grand Junction, CO, to Richard and Elizabeth Tope. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carolyn Stagg Tope; son, Rock Tope and wife, Deborah; son, Col. Chris Tope and wife, Dolores; grandchildren, Michael and Susan Tope; sisters-in-law, Josephine Tope, Marjorie Tope and Marcia Cantrell; niece, Patty Clearman and husband, John; nephew, Michael Eddy and wife, Beth; niece, Carol Ramel, his primary caregiver; other dear relatives on his wife's side of the family; and many wonderful friends. He was one of the good guys and everybody loved him. Dwight was educated in Grand Junction and attended George Washington University in Washington, DC before entering the U.S. Army in 1941. He served as an artillery officer until separating from the service in 1945 as a major. Dwight owned his own insurance business, the Dwight Tope State Agency, until his retirement in 1987 and was active in the Scottish Rite Bodies of Santa Fe, Ballut Abyad Temple of the Shrine, and the Rotary Club of Albuquerque (Paul Harris Fellow). The family would like to thank the dedicated caregivers who helped Dwight, particularly Tina, Conner, Danny, Peggy, Susan and Diana. The memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 114 Carlisle Boulevard S.E., Albuquerque, NM.
