Jeter -- Lois E. Jeter - (Pat) - AC5RM, 60 years old, born March 16, 1939, passed away unexpectedly on March 9, 2000 in Albuquerque, NM. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Fred (Bud) Jeter; her mother Lois Long; her daughters, Dorothy Jeter, Karen Hubert and husband Louis, Lorene Rivera, and Freda Thomas and husband, Chris. She is also survived by nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild due in October. The family will have a private service. A memorial service is pending, you may contact the family. Kettering -- Eunice Lea Kettering, age 93, passed away in her sleep on the 9th of March, 2000. Born April 4, 1906 to the Rev. and Mrs. James D. Lea in Savannah, Ohio. An orphan by age three, she was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Adam Kettering of Ashland, Ohio. A graduate from Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Oberlin, Ohio, in her last years there she became the first woman in the U.S. to pass the tests to become a Fellow in the American Guild of Organists. Graduating from the School of Sacred Music of Union Seminary, NYC, she studied one summer in Austria with Bela Bartok; later with private lessons from Dr. Normand Lockwood and Dr. Felix Labunski. After three years' teaching at Madison University in Virginia, she taught for 23 years at Ashland University in Ohio as Professor of Music and Composer-in-Residence. Upon early retirement to devote full time to composition, she moved to Santa Fe in 1959, then to Albuquerque in 1962. She had written over 300 compositions in all categories. Her work has been widely performed and 36 works have been published. Her compositions are on file at the Fine Arts Library of the University of New Mexico and at the Music Library of Ashland University, Ashland, Ohio. She was a MacDowell Colonist; a member of ASCAP (Amer. Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers); a member of the New Mexico Women Composers' Guild; past member of the National Guild of Organists, and a Life Member of the National Federation of Music Clubs. Affiliated with the Unity Church of Christianity. Coupled with her love of music was a strong religious faith, desiring to write only music that would heal and bless. She is listed in eight biographical dictionaries. Surviving are one sister-in-law, Mrs. John Lea of Wooster, OH; and eight nieces and two nephews. Five brothers and two sisters are deceased. Burial will be private. Cremation arrangements by the Sunrise Society of NM, 891-8200.

Martinez -- Mela Martinez, age 86, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque died on Saturday, March 11, 2000. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Jose A.C. Martinez; sons, Crescencio Martinez and wife, Lydia; Rueben Martinez and wife, Maggie of Albuquerque; Flavio Martinez and wife, Delores of Rush City, Minnesota; eleven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and brother, Joseph A. Duran of Albuquerque. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Mrs. Martinez was a member of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church. Visitation will be held Monday, March 13, 2000 at 6:00 p.m. followed by a Rosary to be recited at French Mortuary Lomas Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. N.E. at 7:00 p.m. with Sophia Gurule reciting. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 14, 2000 at 11:30 a.m., Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, Lomas at Tennessee, N.E. with burial following at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Navarro -- Emilia V. Navarro, a resident of Albuquerque for 60 years, died Friday, March 10, 2000, on her 97th birthday. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews, and many close friends who will greatly miss her love and generosity. Emilia was preceded in death by her husband, J.J. Navarro in 1986. She was a member of Ascension Catholic Church. Visitation will be held Sunday, March 12, 2000, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., at Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Ave. SE. A Rosary will be recited at 5:00 p.m., Sunday, March 12, 2000, in the Fern Chapel of Strong-Thorne Mortuary. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, March 13, 2000, 10:00 a.m., at Church of the Ascension, with Father Edmund Savilla as Celebrant. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Olguin -- Betty Alice (Berg) Olguin, Servant of God, Holy Woman, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law went to her Maker on Friday, March 10, 2000 after a prolonged illness. She is survived by her husband, Nicholas; sons, Peter, Timothy and Christopher; daughters, Valerie, Elizabeth and Anastasia; three grandchildren, Sean, Nicholas, and Jacob; daughter-in-law, Ann, wife of Peter and mother to Nicholas; sons-in-law, Randy, father to Sean and Jacob and Kennedy, husband to Elizabeth. Betty was born in Sugarite, New Mexico in 1937. She attended elementary schools is Raton, NM and San Francisco, CA, junior and high schools in Albuquerque, NM. She married Nicholas in 1957 and together they spent many years overseas while Nicholas served with the U.S. Army for ten years and for 30 years with the U.S. Department of State. Betty raised her five children in places like Iran (three years), Greece (five years), Germany (seven years), Spain (two years), Philippines (four years), and Thailand (four years). She took part in programs which actively promoted better relations between the American community and that of the host nation. In the Philippines, for example, she was actively engaged in supporting fatherless families in several villages in the vicinity of Clark Airbase and in programs to raise money to buy food for several orphanages. In Thailand, she worked with an embassy group which provided medical and other support to U.S. citizens, many in their late teens or early 20's being held in Bangkok prisons. In many cases, she was a surrogate mother to them. She was an active member of the Roman Catholic Church, serving as a Lay Eucharistic Minister in various parished across the globe and always enjoyed teaching CCD to young members of the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Christian Children's Fund. Donations may be mailed to CCF, 2821 Emerywood Parkway, Richmond, VA 23261-6511. Heartfelt thanks are offered to Dr. Takiyyuddoin, Dr. Boedeker, Dr. Diamandidis, and Dr. Norris for their great humanity and the love they always showed Betty. Equal appreciation is extended to many of the nurses and staff at Valley Hospital who did likewise. Visitation and Rosary will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 pm. at Palm Funeral Home on Eastern Avenue. Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Las Vegas Church on Alta Drive at 1:00 p.m. followed by interment services at the Palm Memorial Gardens on Eastern Avenue.

Olguin -- 1925-2000 Former County Commissioner Albert Olguin of Peralta and a longtime resident of Valencia County began a new journey on March 10, 2000. He was born on December 9, 1925 and preceded in death by his brothers, Eugenio and Fidel Olguin. Albert is survived by his wife of 48 years, Elizabeth Olguin of the family home in Peralta; eight children, Ronald and wife, Patsy, Carl and wife, Anna and Robert and wife, Maxine, all of Peralta, Debbie and husband, Norbert Gabaldon of Albuquerque, Bryan and wife, Gabby of Peralta, Karon and husband, Paul Viramontes of Farmington, Renee and husband, Billy Bouma, and David Olguin, all of Albuquerque; 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He devoted his energy and persevered to improve the quality of life for people in Valencia County through his philanthropic efforts and civic duties at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, over 20 years at Peralta Elementary's Halloween carnival, the community action program, and as a Little League coach. He was a veteran of the Korean War. His spiritual energy will remain with family and members of the community to continue his promotion for change and personal growth, his family wrote. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Ernest Olguin, Robert Olguin Jr., Norbert Gabaldon Jr., Mark Olguin, Matt Olguin, Paul Ricco Gabaldon. Viewing will be held at 5:00 p.m., Sunday, March 12, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Peralta followed by a Rosary at 6:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m., Monday, March 13, at Our Lady of Guadalupe. Interment will take place at the Valencia Catholic Cemetery. Romero Funeral Home, 609 N. Main, in Belen, is in charge of arrangements.

Richards -- Kent Richards, 58, passed away suddenly in Tucson, Arizona on Thursday, March 9, 2000. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Peggy; sons, Troy (Katarina) Richards and Trace (Monica, grandchildren, Vanessa and Eric) Richards of Tucson; daughter, Tara Richards of Dallas; parents, Rick and Berna Richards of Albuquerque; sister, Janet (Ron, niece, Tamara and nephew, Trevin) Janser of Albuquerque; mother-in-law, Dorothy Donato of Bullhead City, AZ; and brother-in-law, Carl (Nancy) Donato of Scottsdale, AZ; as well as numerous other relatives. Retired since 1996, Kent and Peggy traveled in a RV searching for golf sites and spending their extra time in Angel Fire and Tucson. He impacted many children in Albuquerque through his involvement with sports, including YAFL and Roadrunner Little League. This"gentle-giant" spread love and generosity to his grandchildren and family for years. Kent will remain an inspiration to his family and friends, and will be loved and missed forever. Kent was cremated in Tucson and memorial services will be held at Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 8600 Academy NE, in Albuquerque, on Wednesday, March 15, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. At the families' request, all memorial donations may be made in Kent's name to the Arizona's Children Foundation, 2700 S. 8th Street, Tucson, AZ 85713.

Shriver -- Viola H. Shriver, 89, passed away February 18, 2000, following a brief illness. She moved to Albuquerque from Cleveland, Ohio, in 1945, with her husband, Al, who was in the jewelry and watch repair business. From 1948 through 1963, Vi held the position of executive secretary to a succession of manager of the Albuquerque Hilton Hotel. She next worked as a legal secretary for several local law firms, including Sutin, Thayer & Browne. The Shrivers were married for over 50 years until Al's death in 1986. They had no children, but Vi was very close to her numerous nieces and nephews. She was an avid correspondent, and kept in close touch with her extended family in Ohio, Florida, and California. Her relatives and her many friends in Albuquerque and elsewhere will miss her sharp mind, her quick wit, and her fierce independence. Following Vi's wishes, cremation has taken place, and no memorial service is planned.

Smyer -- Paul Anthony Smyer, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, passed away on March 3, 2000, after a lengthy illness. Paul was the fifth of six sons born to Winifred DeLaney Smyer and Worth Miller Smyer in Amarillo, Texas. He was preceded in death by his son, Paul A. Smyer Jr.; his parents; and four of his five brothers. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruth K. Smyer; his daughter, Myrna Smyer; son-in-law, Carlton Canaday; his granddaughter, Sherryl Smyer; step-grandsons, Stephen and David Smyer; his brother, Msgr. Francis A. Smyer of Amarillo; brother-in-law, William Klein Jr. of Denver, CO; numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends. Paul was a natural athlete. In his youth, he enjoyed boxing, football and baseball. He was an avid Boy Scout, having become an Eagle Scout only 13 months after joining the Scouts. As a teenager, he was one of the most decorated Scouts in the United States. In Albuquerque as a Scout Master, he is remembered by men, who as boys, were in his troop. Paul was a member of various organizations. He served as President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and was the first President of the first Exchange Club in Albuquerque. He was President of the Albuquerque Board of Insurance Agents, as well as being the co-founder and first Vice-President of the Rose Society. He was an enthusiastic outdoorsman, serving as President of both the Wild Turkey Federation and the New Mexico Trout Association while belonging to Ducks Unlimited and other sport clubs. He was an original member of the Four Hills Country Club, and a member of the Petroleum and Elks Clubs. Paul graduated from Price Academy and went on to Amarillo College, Loyola College in Chicago and he graduated from West Texas A & M. He was in the Army Air Corps during WWII, stationed at various bases in the United States, including Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque. Abroad he was stationed in England and Russia. After the war he established his own insurance and real estate agency. During 50 successful years in business, Mr. Smyer received many business and civic awards. Van Dusen -- Beatrice Julia"Bee" Van Dusen, 81, a resident of Albuquerque since 1993, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000. She is survived by her husband, Roy R. Van Dusen Jr.; a brother, Leonard Strauss of Chicopee, Mass.; and two nieces and a nephew, including Susan Collins of Albuquerque. She was preceded in death by son, Lt. Roy R. Van Dusen III. Bee was born in New York City and grew up in White Plains, New York, where she graduated from high school in 1937. In World War II, she served in the Women's Army Corps at Ft. Benning, Georgia, where she was married in 1945. She traveled widely with her Army officer husband, living in Taiwan, Germany and Hong King. She received her Bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland when she lived in Columbia, Maryland in 1978. Services were private, memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Assn.
