She married Nicholas in 1957 and together they spent many years overseas while Nicholas served with the U.S. Army for ten years and for 30 years with the U.S. Department of State. Betty raised her five children in places like Iran (three years), Greece (five years), Germany (seven years), Spain (two years), Philippines (four years), and Thailand (four years). She took part in programs which actively promoted better relations between the American community and that of the host nation. In the Philippines, for example, she was actively engaged in supporting fatherless families in several villages in the vicinity of Clark Airbase and in programs to raise money to buy food for several orphanages. In Thailand, she worked with an embassy group which provided medical and other support to U.S. citizens, many in their late teens or early 20's being held in Bangkok prisons. In many cases, she was a surrogate mother to them. She was an active member of the Roman Catholic Church, serving as a Lay Eucharistic Minister in various parished across the globe and always enjoyed teaching CCD to young members of the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Christian Children's Fund. Donations may be mailed to CCF, 2821 Emerywood Parkway, Richmond, VA 23261-6511. Heartfelt thanks are offered to Dr. Takiyyuddoin, Dr. Boedeker, Dr. Diamandidis, and Dr. Norris for their great humanity and the love they always showed Betty.
