LOPEZ RUIZ -- Sara Lopez Ruiz 31 December 1904 - 22 December 2004 "If you follow Jesus you will never be sorry." That was her credo, a credo which she unfailingly obeyed since early childhood. On 22 December 2004, 9 days prior to her 100th birthday, the creator called Sarita to his celestial realm to claim her rewards. Our beloved progenitress expired serenely in her sleep in El Paso, after a brief illness terminating a century of obedience to The Master and abundance of love, compassion, and wisdom. She was born to Apolonio Lopez and Rafaelita Ramirez on New Year's Eve in 1904 in Canyon De La Luz, near Alamogordo, NM; she was the sole survivor of seven siblings. Her parents had migrated to the U.S. in the late 1800s fearing the political climate in an unstable Mexico at the time. In 1908 Rafaelita died during the childbirth of her last daughter, also named Rafaelita. A destitute Apolonio, following a custom at that time, gave Sarita and a younger sister (Natividad) to a local grocer and the infant Rafaelita to a local rancher. As if to prove He works in a mysterious way, during these 4 years Sarita discovered The Word. Eventually Sarita and Nati were reunited with Apolonio but Rafaelita never rejoined the family. Soon after that Apolonio moved his family to Jarales, NM, where Sarita spent the next 15 years in a farming environment and received her education in a one-room school house in Belen. On 12 December, 1929 she married Manuel O. Ruiz in Albuquerque, with the family settling in the Duranes community again in an agricultural setting. The union produced six children: Erlinda Nieto, since deceased (Dennie); Manuel "Nuni" Ruiz (Angie Chavez), Albuquerque; Esther Fox (Ira), Myerstown, PA; Edna Mulkey (Willis) Cartersville, GA; Karleen, deceased at infancy; Reynaldo "Baby" Ruiz (Ester Lopez), El Paso, TX, with whom Sara Enjoyed her later days. She also has a stepdaughter, Lydia Diaz, in Sacramento. In addition, she has a bloodline of 29 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, and 31 great-great-grandchildren. Sarita was among the worshipers that gathered at Monte Calvario Spanish Baptist Church in the early days of the church. She remained faithful there until the Lord called her home. Sarita will lie in state at The Garcia Mortuary, 717 Stover SW on Sunday, December 26 for viewing from 4 pm to 7 pm with services following. On Monday, December 27 additional services will be held at Monte Calvario Baptist Church, 919 7th St. SW with Dr. David Atencio officiating at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be Monday, December 27 at the Fairview Memorial Park, 700 Yale S.E.
