He was assigned to the U.S. Army Paratrooper Division. In 1943 he and his troop were assigned a reconnaissance paratrooper drop over Sicily, which was occupied by enemy troops. During the high risk drop, several men were killed. Gabriel was one of eight men from his squad who was captured by the Germans. Upon being captured, the Germans marched him for five weeks across the Italian Straights into Germany. He was placed into a German Prisoner of War (POW) Camp called"Stallog II". He spent two years fighting the problem of just surviving. He was tortured, beaten and mentally tormented. Each day Gabriel had to use every bit of his mental and physical strength just to see the next day. From the original eight men who where captured with him, only three survived. Upon release, Gabriel continued duty with his Paratrooper Division. He received many medals and citation, one of which is the purple heart.
