Haltom -- Shirley Mae Lucado Haltom, 80, died peacefully June 29th, 2000. Shirley, as always, amazed all of us with her wonderful spirit and strong will in fighting her illness. Her family is overwhelmed with her courage and dignity. She was born to Elmina and Dee Lucado in Memphis, Texas on October 25, 1919. The second youngest of nine children. She grew up in Slaton, Texas where she met and married Felix Tucker Haltom on September 25, 1930. They danced a beautiful life together until Felix's death in 1998. With the Sprouse Reitz Variety Co., they managed stores in Truth or Consequences, Artesia, Clayton, and Gallup, New Mexico and in Littlefield, Texas. Shirley worked every day with Felix and took care of their family. She was an amazing lady, so full of love and happiness. Kindness filled her days, as she thought of everyone but herself. After retiring from Sprouse Reitz, Shirley and Felix moved to Tucson, Arizona to open a Toys by Roy store. They loved working in their beautiful store filled to the brim with every imaginable toy, including all the stuffed animals and dolls that Shirley loved. In 1980, they retired after Shirley had a stroke, for sixteen years they lived in their home in Tucson. We will all miss this spectacular lady who was the very model of hope and enthusiasm for life and the future. Shirley has brightened the lives of all those she has known. When we think of Shirley, we hardly remember for the last 20 years she could only say a few words and only walk a few steps. She would take your hand and say"Oh Yes", with such love and understanding that suddenly your burdens were very small. Shirley did have one small flaw, she loved to drive fast. Whether is was her boat, at Elephant Butte, or her yellow Cadillac, or her fire engine red scooter, you had better watch out! And just forget about keeping up. Shirley and Felix have two sons, Bill Reid and Felix Tucker. Their idyllic childhood is due to wonderful parents. Shirley is survived by her son, Bill Reid and his wife, Ann Haltom; and their son, Robb Reid Haltom and his children, Bridget Rose and Brandon Reid; and her son, Tucker and his wife, Donna Haltom and their children, Tanner Justin and Kylee Elizabeth Haltom, all of Albuquerque, New Mexico. In her first family, Shirley is survived by her sister, Christine Reid, whom she loved very much and has been with for the past two years. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews including Betty Upton and family of Canyon, Texas and Pat Rampy and family of Lubbock, Texas, Pam Lucado of Anaheim, California, Jacqueline Wallace and family of Fort Smith, Arkansas, and Joan Carrigan and family of Alaska; nephews to include are Dee Lucado of Andrews, Texas and Max Lucado and family of San Antonio, Texas. Memorial contributions may be made to All Faiths Receiving Home, 271-0329. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, July 3, 2000 at 3:00 p.m. at Woodmark Retirement Community, 7201 Prospect Ave., Albuquerque, New Mexico with Reverend Tony Chavez officiating. Arrangements by Sandia Funeral Care, 7601 Wyoming Blvd., 821-0010.
