SCHROEDER -- Christian F. Schroeder, Jr., a long-time resident of Albuquerque, died peacefully on December 24, 2008. He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Jeannette. Chris is survived and will be dearly missed by his daughter, Kimberly Schroeder; his daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Josep Maria Prat; and his son, Mark Schroeder. SIMS -- Betty Lee Sims, age 84, passed away December 12, 2008 in Albuquerque after a long struggle with Parkinsons Disease. She was born to Edmund and Opal Denman in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she graduated from high school in 1942. She graduated from Wooster College in Ohio in 1946, with a BA degree. She enrolled in Purdue University to study for her MS. While there, she met Jim Sims, a WWII veteran returned to Purdue after Army service in Europe. Betty and Jim were married July 14, 1948 and recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in Albuquerque. They had first moved to Albuquerque in 1952. Betty continued her education and obtained a teaching certificate. She taught at APS, Van Buren Middle School from 1969 until 1980. Betty was a volunteer for many community services during her life, including several years at Presbyterian Hospital. When Betty's father passed away in NC, Betty's mother, Opal, soon moved to Albuquerque. Betty lovingly cared for her mother for several years. Opal's family celebrated her 100th birthday at Mission Manor in 1993 in Albuquerque, shortly before she passed away. Betty was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Albuquerque, where she made many friends, and where a private Memorial Service was held December 22, 2008 to celebrate her life. Betty is survived by her husband; her sister Dorothy Blair living in NC; her three children, Ed Sims, Vicki Sims and Barry Sims. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Nate Sims, Jeff Sims, Clara Sims, Jessica Sims, and Amanda Sims. Her cremains will eventually be interred with her beloved husband Jim in the columbarium at the Veteran's National Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church or a charity of choice.

SLATER -- Ronald F. Slater, 76, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2008. He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Elia "Ellie"; two brothers-in-law, Ernie Fresquez and Sam Fresquez, both of Albuquerque; sister-in-law, Mary Louise and husband, Joseph Valdez of Albuquerque; and several nieces and nephews. Ron was born the only child to the late Harwood and Sylvia Slater in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin. He graduated from Sheboygan Falls High School and attended and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Ron served his country in the United States Air Force for four years. Following his military duty, he began his career with the Kohler Company in Sheboygan Falls. He became a representative in the south and southwest areas for the company, retiring from Kohler after 32 years of service. He and Elia were married on June 2, 1962 in Albuquerque. He had been a Shriner for many years. After retirement, he and his wife began playing golf and traveled extensively across the world. Ron loved life and lived it to the fullest. Rosary will be recited for Ron on Sunday, January 4, 2009, 6:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel. Funeral services will be held for Ron on Monday, January 5, 2009, 10:00 a.m., at St. Chad's Episcopal Church, 7171 Tennyson St. NE. Entombment will follow at 1:30 p.m., at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. STRONG -- Marjorie Ruth Foster Strong, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend passed away January 2nd, 2009 in Albuquerque, NM. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Almon, three children, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many devoted friends. Marge was born in Bottineau, North Dakota, on October 25, 1921, to Clark Philo Foster and Mary Margaret (Minnie) Cameron Foster. She graduated from Minot High School and completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Education in 1943 from Minot State University. As a patriotic member of the Greatest Generation, Marge was the Asst. Coordinator and instructor of the Navy V-5 and Navy V-12 cadets at Minot State University during World War II. When the Program was completed in April 1944, Marge was honored with an appointment as commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve, and served in the Personnel Division at the Bureau of Aeronautics in Washington, D.C. While it was unusual for a Navy WAVE officer marrying an Army Captain, she returned home to marry her high school sweetheart, Almon Strong on September 30, 1945. Following the War, Marge and Al moved to Devils Lake, ND where Almon purchased and operated a funeral home. It was there that their two oldest children were born. When the Korean Conflict began in 1950, both Marjorie and Almon were called back to active duty, however with two children, Marge received a permanent discharge. Almon, Marge & family traveled throughout the U.S. & Germany while Almon served a 30 year career in the U.S. Air Force. Their youngest daughter was born at Cheyenne AFB, WY. When the family moved back to Minot, Marjorie completed her Masters in Counseling at the University of North Dakota, and thereafter worked in that field of education until retirement from work. Marge served on the Board of Regents at Minot State University and on May 23, 1991, she was honored to receive special recognition as recipient of the "Golden Award" from Minot State University Alumni Association as the outstanding alumni. Marge was a two time cancer survivor. In 2005 Marge and Almon moved to Manzano del Sol from Sun City West, AZ. Marge was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Chapter AN P.E.O. A memorial celebration of her life will be held at Manzano del Sol Chapel, time and date pending. TAYLOR -- Carol L. Taylor, 83, born and raised in Pawnee, OK and a resident of Albuquerque since 1952, passed unexpectedly although peacefully, at home on Sunday, December 21, 2008 with family in attendance. Beloved mother, she is survived by her sons, Jeffrey S. Taylor, Richard J. Taylor and wife Lynn, and Scott R. Taylor. She was the daughter of Stanley and Lilla Smith. She was preceeded in death by her brother, J.B. Smith, her son, Thomas R. Taylor and her husband Harry R. Taylor. She was a kind and gentle woman, a square dancer, a collector of beautiful porcelain dolls, and last but not least, an enthusiastic animal lover, who often found homes for the many fortunate dogs and cats who crossed her path. WHITTEN -- Coy Edwin Whitten III, 65, passed away at home on Monday, December 22, 2008 after battling a long illness. He is preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Coy Evans Whitten II, and by his nephew Christopher Evans Todd. He is survived by his sister Barbara Todd, and her husband Rick Todd of Phoenix, Arizona, nephew Kevin Todd and wife Jamie of Durham, North Carolina, and by his beloved canine companion Sunny. A graduate of Texas Tech, Coy moved to Albuquerque in 1973 and ventured into the world of buying, polishing and selling turquoise stones with partner Vance Coffman. Pursuing his creativity with jewelry, he produced a stunning line of original bracelets of sterling silver and inlaid stones that he sold to independent buyers and jewelry stores. Coy was a master model maker for metal and wax castings fabricated for jewelry companies in N.M. and throughout the Southwest. He joined forces in the 1980's with a leading jewelry manufacturer of Black Hills gold, Coleman Co., creating original metal fabrications for their own line of tri-color gold and stone settings. Coy's "laid back" nature provided the patience to ensure exquisite detail in everything he created and pursued. His talent and proud accomplishments will be dearly missed. WILLIAMSON -- Theresa Elaine Durler Williamson, 79, a resident of Albuquerque since 1961, passed away Monday, December 29, 2008. With the love, care and support of her husband of 57 years she fought a long and valiant battle with cancer. Her strength and resiliency was an inspiration to her family and all who knew her. She is survived by her husband Charles "Chuck" Williamson; children, John Walter Williamson and wife Susan, Rebecca Williamson/Monette and husband John, Charles Michael Williamson and wife Debra, Debora Lea Williamson/Griffin and husband Bill; grandchildren Christopher and Mikal Monette, Kevin and Caitlin Williamson, and Kayla and Kyle Williamson; sister Mary Ann Jacobson; niece Sharen Durler Pflughoeft; nephews Stanley, Steven and Michael Durler, Paul Jacobson and numerous other relatives and friends. Theresa was preceded in death by her parents John and Marguerite Durler; brother John Durler; and sister Peggy Higgins. She married Charles J. Williamson in 1951 and lived in Los Alamos, NM before moving to Albuquerque. She worked for Mountain Bell for 41 years until her retirement in 1993 as an assignment engineer. She was a member of the Pioneers retirement group. Her true love in life was her grandchildren. Theresa enjoyed following their athletic and academic achievements. She was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Prayer Service will be held at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel on Monday, January 5, 2009, 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE. BAROS -- Isabelle Baros, 85, passed away December 27, 2008. She is survived by her children, John E. Baros, and his two daughters Ashley and Stacie, Elizabeth C. Baros, and her three children, Melissa, Andrea and Allen, Terrie Jorgensen, (Ed), and their two sons, John and Jason, Rosine C. McConnell, (Don), and their three sons, Ryan, Ross, and Riley, Loretta A. House, and her two sons, Cameron and Austin; two other grandsons, Blaise and Anthony Baros; 13 great-grandchildren plus one on the way; one brother; five sisters. Isabelle was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Baros, of over 55 years; two sons, Fred Baros and Randy Baros. She was a lifetime resident of New Mexico. Rosary will be held Sunday, January 4, 2009, at 7:00 p.m., at Risen Savior. Mass will be Monday, January 5, 2009, at 10:00 a.m., at Risen Savior. Inurnment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. BECKER -- Maurice Becker, age 87, of Albuquerque, passed away at Presbyterian Hospital December 28, 2008 with loving family at his side. He was the son of Gordon and Belle Becker, and grew up in the Catskill Mountains of New York State. Following military service in Europe where he was wounded during World War II, he continued college at Cornell University. He married Eugenia Wilkin of Ithaca, New York, and went on to earn a Doctorate from Purdue University in Microbiology. Although left a paraplegic from polio in 1952, Dr. Becker's accomplishments in his chosen field were many, and included setting up and directing State virology laboratories in both Maryland and Michigan. He was well known for his civic contributions in the DeWitt/Lansing, Michigan area where he resided from 1960 to 1987. After his retirement, he moved to Albuquerque, became active in the community and was named Albuquerque Citizen of the year in 1999. He enjoyed traveling worldwide and also pursued careers in writing and art. He published and illustrated numerous articles, and became a well known local artist. His proudest achievement was completion of an 8'x 20' mural at La Vida Llena, the retirement facility where he resided, which depicts many aspects of New Mexico life. Maurice was predeceased by his son Gary; brother Milford; and sister Dorothy. He is survived by daughters Sylvia Pow and Sheryl Savas; son Stan; grandchildren Chris and Lauralie Pow, Tanya Savas and Claudia Marbaix; great-grandchildren Gavin and Matthew Pow; and sister Ruth Moore.
