Coy Edwin Whitten III, 65, passed away at home on Monday, December 22, 2008 after battling a long illness. He is preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Coy Evans Whitten II, and by his nephew Christopher Evans Todd. He is survived by his sister Barbara Todd, and her husband Rick Todd of Phoenix, Arizona, nephew Kevin Todd and wife Jamie of Durham, North Carolina, and by his beloved canine companion Sunny. A graduate of Texas Tech, Coy moved to Albuquerque in 1973 and ventured into the world of buying, polishing and selling turquoise stones with partner Vance Coffman. Pursuing his creativity with jewelry, he produced a stunning line of original bracelets of sterling silver and inlaid stones that he sold to independent buyers and jewelry stores. Coy was a master model maker for metal and wax castings fabricated for jewelry companies in N.M. and throughout the Southwest. He joined forces in the 1980's with a leading jewelry manufacturer of Black Hills gold, Coleman Co., creating original metal fabrications for their own line of tri-color gold and stone settings. Coy's "laid back" nature provided the patience to ensure exquisite detail in everything he created and pursued. His talent and proud accomplishments will be dearly missed.
