ROBERTS, JOAN went peacefully to rest with Jesus, after a brief hospice in her home in Albuquerque, on November 28, 2014 at the age of 77. She was born Joan Lou Williams on August 11, 1937 in Winslow, Arizona, to Hurchell Raymond and Dora May Brizendine Williams. After having lived all of her life "standing on the corner" in Winslow, Arizona, she fell in love with a handsome itinerant carpenter-cowboy who was passing through town, Leslie Jewel Roberts. They married in Holbrook, Arizona on July 29, 1955. They followed the work and the rodeos until Joan said they had to settle down somewhere to raise their family, JoDee Lee Ann, born July 1, 1956, Toy Omega La Rue, born December 10, 1958 and Melodee Theone, born June 19, 1960. They made their home in Phoenix, Arizona, where Les and Joan made their profession of faith July 31, 1960 and became active in the Southern Baptist Church. Always an avid reader and lover of books, Joan was instrumental in setting up the first library at Love Baptist Church. She and Les also worked teaching preschoolers. It was during this time that they lost their baby Toy to meningitis. The family moved back to Winslow in 1962 and worked toward opening up their own business, Roberts' Roofing and Remodeling, of which Joan was secretary and bookkeeper. Joan and Les held leadership roles in Sunday School, Woman's Missionary Union, Brotherhood and deaconship at First Baptist Church. Again, Joan led out in revamping and refurbishing the existing library, while taking church library courses. Joan and Les felt led to leave the main church to establish a mission church in a suburb that was being built. Of course, Joan established the first library in the new Desert View Baptist Church. She also began taking courses by mail to complete her secondary education. In 1973, Joan and Les relocated the family and the business to Portales, New Mexico, to be closer to his aging mother. Joan graduated with her high school diploma from National Schools in 1974 and enrolled in Eastern New Mexico University to study Library Science. She attended three years at the university and was a New Mexico Certified Librarian - Level I and II, working at the Portales Public Library from 1973-1978. While putting herself through college, she graduated one daughter with a teaching degree and another with a nursing degree. At the same time, she continued to do the books for her husband's business, manage a home and lead, teach, and organize the library in the University Baptist Church. When Les' mother needed caregiving, Les and Joan moved to Tucumcari, New Mexico to be with her. Joan found great joy in providing that comfort to her mother-in-law until she passed away. She continued to be the office manager for their business, a total of 30 years, 1965-1995. She continued to be active in Women's Ministries, in Sunday School and as a Deacon's wife at three different churches, First Baptist Church, Trinity Baptist Church and Immanuel Baptist Church. She even served as a custodian at FBC from 1998-2002. Even with this busy life, she somehow managed to enjoy a good book and a cup of tea. These accomplishments would be amazing enough, yet Joan persevered in the face of being a three-time cancer survivor, having open-heart surgery, back surgery and knee replacements. She was an extraordinary woman. Joan moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2004 to live with her daughter and provide care for Les, who had Alzheimer's disease. When she was widowed in July of 2005, she sold her home in Tucumcari and moved in permanently with her daughter and son-in-law. She became a member of the Promise Community Church, started their Silver Sisters group and was active in church life. She participated in community outreach, benevolent ministries and Bible studies. She volunteered at the John Adams Middle School Library. She was part of a movie discussion group at New Life City. She spent time at the Bio Park and Zoo. She enjoyed her friends. She cherished her grandkids and great-grandkids. She loved green chile. She read books. She worked puzzles. She embraced life. This legacy she leaves to her daughter and son-in-law, JoDee and John Scholz of Albuquerque, New Mexico; daughter and son-in-law, Melodee and Jeff Smith of Kellogg, Iowa; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Joel and Tracey Scholz of Wheatridge, Colorado; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Jeremy and LaDonna Scholz of Bennett, Colorado; grandson Sergeant Kevin Nathaniel Smith of Ft. Lewis, Washington; and grandson Aaron Patrick Smith of Austin, Texas; sister-in-law, Patricia Douglas of Modesto, California; and nine wonderful great- grandchildren. Joan Roberts was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie J. Roberts, her baby daughter, Toy Omega La Rue, her sister, Frances Louise McAllister, and parents, Hurchell and Dora May Williams. A Homegoing Celebration will be held for Joan Roberts on Friday, December 5, at the Promise Community Church, 3803 Atrisco Drive NW, Suite A, Albuquerque, New Mexico. There will be a viewing at 9:00 am and the service at 10:00 am followed by a fellowship dinner (potluck). A Homegoing Reunion Celebration will be held on Saturday, December 6 at Noon, Tucumcari Memorial Cemetery, Tucumcari, New Mexico. The graveside service will be followed by a fellowship meal. ROUNDS, URSULA GERDA APPEL The story of the lovely Ursula Gerda Appel Rounds -- to be adequately complete -- must include words such as elegance, class, refinement, tastefulness and many more. Ursula was born in Nuremberg, Germany, on the 9th of February, 1940. Growing up in postwar Germany, she pursued a healthy lifestyle consisting of skiing, swimming, and the ever popular activity of hiking "Wanderungen" through the many beautiful forests of Germany. She was always eager and ready to launch into adventuresome yet wholesome group activities with her friends. And above all, the beautifully graceful and athletic Ursula loved dancing. Being raised as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints faith, she readily embraced the moral code of her religion: chastity, honesty, being charitable to any needy person, thrift, hard work, self-betterment, and above all, love of God and His Son, Jesus Christ. Ursula was the last of the four children of Josef and Gerda Appel. Her sister Marianne, being the eldest, preceded Ursula's arrival by four years. Then in quick succession came Fritz one year later, followed by Rudi the next year, and finally, another year later, the little baby of the family, "Nesthkchen" Ursula arrived. Being active in the LDS church, she participated in all the church activities. And at the age of seventeen, the beautiful Ursula caught the eye of a young LDS missionary from America named Don Wayne Rounds. At the conclusion of his church mission to Germany and his return to the United States, Don wrote a letter to Ursula, who promptly replied. Encouraged, Don quickly sent a second letter, which was followed by yet another eager response from Ursula. Thus an eighteen-month 'pen pal' relationship was born, culminating in his proposal of marriage, and her acceptance. In February of 1959, at the age of 19 years, young Ursula's TWA Airlines Constellation touched down in the dusty town of Albuquerque, NM, and Ursula and Don were married together for "time-and-all-eternity" in the LDS Mesa, Arizona, temple. This marriage was blessed with two beautiful babies -- a handsome boy named Steven Wayne, and beautiful little Deborah, a "spittin' image" of her lovely mother (Later on when Debbie was in her teen years, she and her youthful mother Ursula were frequently judged to be sisters)! Ursula was a devoted mother to Steve and Debbie, and the proud grandmother of 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Sadly, Debbie's twin boys Eric and Paul died at birth. The remaining children from Debbie and Brad Haslam are: Vince Haslam (Erin) and daughters Avery, Molly and Magnolia; Aaron (Danielle) Haslam and sons Oliver and Wyatt; Emily (Matt) Rogers and sons Jack, Charlie and Harry; and Meagan (Adam) Henrie. Steve and his wife Sharon's children are, in order: Danny Wayne Rounds (Kelly); Kimberly (Ryan) Lewis and daughter Dahlia Gerda [named in honor of Ursula Gerda]; and Amanda (Lucas) Maes and daughter Eisley; Ursula, in addition to being a loving, active, hands-on mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and an active member of the LDS church, had a stellar career in the Space and Satellite division of Sandia National Laboratories where her "no-nonsense" work ethic and "attention-to-detail" professionalism earned her great admiration and respect, both from her supervisors, and her peers as well. Ursula, having courageously fought off the deadly cancer Multiple Myeloma for almost 11 years, succumbed to its side effects on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday the 27th of November, 2014. Ursula died just two-and-one-half months short of her and Don's 56th anniversary of their wedding vows, solemnly made in the Mesa, Arizona, temple on Feb 12th, 1959. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, December 1, 2014 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Panorama Heights Ward, 300 Loma Colorado Boulevard NE, Rio Rancho, NM 87124. Interment to follow at Vista Verde Memorial Park, 4310 Sara Road SE, Rio Rancho, NM. In lieu of flowers donations may be given in Ursula's memory to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF).
