KING, SAM Sam King, 92, was born in Stanley, New Mexico to Will and Molly King, on August 4, 1922, just a few years after they homesteaded in the Estancia Valley in 1917. He went to be with the Lord on November 26, 2014 at the Beehive Home in Edgewood. Sam had great responsibilities as a young boy growing up on a farm and running a dairy. In 1932 he started dry land farming and walked behind a horse to plow the land. His family lived bravely through the depression years and helped others when they could. During his years at Stanley High School, he got up very early, milked the cows, delivered the milk to Santa Fe and returned to attend school. Sam graduated in the Stanley High School Class of 1941 along with his high school sweetheart Margaret Lacy. They married in October of 1941. They were married for 2 months when Pearl Harbor was bombed. When the US entered World War II, Sam continued farming to help the war effort and delivered milk to the Japanese Internment Camp outside of Santa Fe. Sam, his father Will, and his brothers Bruce and Don, grew pinto beans on their dry land farm. When his dad passed away in 1949, the brothers carried on with the family farm. Their mother, Mollie, served as the farm bookkeeper for many years. During the early 1950's they were the first in the Estancia Valley to irrigate crops. There was an ocean of water under their land. They also raised beef cattle on the range and in feedlots. Sam supported his younger brother Bruce's effort as he entered public service and through his three terms as governor. Sam, Bruce, and younger brother Don were always together and people in the community saw them riding around in their pick up to check on their large ranch and farm holdings. They hired many local people to help them with the farming and ranching and some of the men stayed with King Brothers for as many as 50 years. Sam and Margaret attended Stanley Union Church where he was Sunday School Superintendent and Church Board President and she played the piano and taught Sunday School. Sam and Margaret raised four children who all graduated from Moriarty High School. Sam served the community in many capacities. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout and went on to become a Boy Scout Leader. Later, Sam served on the Stanley and Moriarty School Board for over 35 years. The Moriarty-Edgewood School District Administration Building is named in his honor. He also served for five decades with the Edgewood Soil and Water Conservation District. Sam was a member of the New Mexico Amigos, enjoying many trips around the country with them. He loved sharing stories and encouraging growth for his native state, New Mexico. Sam was a member of the Rotary Club in Moriarty and was recognized and honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. In 1985, a few years after the loss of his first wife, Sam married Che Sun Kim. He and Che Sun enjoyed many years of travelling, gardening, and fun. They resided in the beautiful rock house in Stanley that he built in 1941. Sam was preceded in death by his father Will; daughter Jeanette; wife Margaret; mother Mollie; and brother Bruce. Those he left behind include wife Che Sun Kim King; sister Leota and husband of Montana; brother Don King and wife Dorothy; son David Will King and wife Marty; daughter Wanda Fishburn and husband Mike; son Sam Lester King and wife Erin. Grandchildren John Fishburn and wife Lara, Michelle Fishburn, David Will King II and wife Melissa, Kevin Sam King and wife Linda, Audra King and husband James Deck, and Tyler King and wife Chauna, and Shannon Moore; Che Sun's daughters Teresa Rembe and husband Matt and Lisa Houser husband Ken. Great -grandchildren include Steven Fishburn, Kara Fishburn, Avery King, Emma King, Daniel Fishburn, Sam Tyler King, Reece Deck, Lily King, Benjamin King and Delaney Clark. Che Sun's grandchildren Mateo and Max Rembe and Ella Houser. He also had many nephews, nieces, and great nephews and nieces. The family wishes to thank the many caregivers who drove to Stanley to help Sam and Che Sun and the caregivers at the Beehive in Edgewood. Their kindness will always be remembered. Pall Bearers will be Mike Fishburn, John Fishburn, Tyler Sam King, David Will King II, Kevin Sam King, James Deck, Bill King, and Jerry King. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you give to the Jeanette King Scholarship fund at UNM. KIRKLAND, DAVID NORMAN Age 66, of Placitas, NM, passed on while surrounded by his loving family on the afternoon of November 18th, 2014 in Albuquerque following an April 2014 diagnosis of aggressive stage four prostate cancer with metastasis to the bone. Born August 10, 1948 to Lonnie "Kirk" Kirkland and Barbara McKinney in his mother's hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana, David, the second of four children, was an "army brat". Living a gypsy lifestyle, along with siblings Carole Sue, Kristie and John T., meant David knew how to adapt to life's changing demands. In his childhood, David lived in the USA as far Southeast as Georgia, North in Idaho and West in California. One of his biggest adventures was living three years in Orleans, France in two old and genuine, but cold, French chateaux. The experience in France was enormously enriching, broadening and developing his worldview before the family moved back "across the pond" to settle in Albuquerque, NM. Early in life David demonstrated his independence and ambition. At age 11, he was a door-to-door "Spudnut" donuts salesman, hawking his sugary wares from a basket slung about his neck. Later, he became a paper boy delivering the Albuquerque Journal by scooter (a motorized privilege he absolutely abused, and in fact boasted about to his children). David graduated from Manzano High School in 1966 and went on to pursue a Civil Engineering degree from New Mexico State University. A proud "Aggie-for-life" in the making, he continued to work odd jobs in order to pay for his tuition, eventually earning his degree in 1973. It was this undeniable work ethic which aided him in acquiring not only success in the business world, but the respect and love of many friends in all aspects of his life. In 1976, his younger sister Kristie decided it was time for David to meet his wife, and introduced him to Rita Sims. Two years later, David married Rita, the love of his life, in a grassy field in the Jemez Mountains. The couple remained married and very much in love until David's passing. Dave's engineering degree allowed him to work with natural gas companies in projects ranging from Utah, New Mexico, Missouri, and Colorado. If your home is heated by natural gas, you've likely benefitted from David's life's work. He loved mentoring young engineers and he also partnered in a private engineering consulting firm with his life-long friend, Jon Jones. Outside of work, Dave loved cooking and was both an avid skier and cyclist. As a younger man, he worked ski patrol in New Mexico and Utah. He clocked countless miles biking with The Samob Bicycling Group, his circle of friends who christened him with the moniker "Downhill Dave" due to his fearless love of racing down steep mountains. The only thing Dave loved more than classic 70s comedy, great bourbon, Grand Funk Railroad, and both Chicago and Delta blues, was his family he considered providing for them his life's proudest accomplishment. Dave is survived by his wife of 36 years, Rita Sims of Albuquerque, NM and his two children, Caitlin Kirkland of Austin, TX and Kevin Kirkland of Albuquerque. Additionally, he is survived by his siblings Carole Sue Roberts (Shannon), Kristie James (John), and John T. He also leaves behind his special in-laws Nancy Cooper, Judith Sims, Edward D. and Therese Sims, Linda Hill, Colleen Bultman, and Scott Sims. Also surviving David are numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, David preferred that you donate to the Limb Preservation Foundation (www.limbpreservation.org) in honor of his good friend Rick Allen. As services have already been held, it's probably best to grab a couple fingers of something sturdy, and throw on The Blues Brothers, Monty Python and The Holy Grail, or any number of classic Saturday Night Live sketches and laugh until your guts hurt. If you prefer music, try Buddy Guy, the Allman Brothers or, of course, Grand Funk Railroad.

ROUNDS, URSULA GERDA APPEL The story of the lovely Ursula Gerda Appel Rounds -- to be adequately complete -- must include words such as elegance, class, refinement, tastefulness and many more. Ursula was born in Nuremberg, Germany, on the 9th of February, 1940. Growing up in postwar Germany, she pursued a healthy lifestyle consisting of skiing, swimming, and the ever popular activity of hiking "Wanderungen" through the many beautiful forests of Germany. She was always eager and ready to launch into adventuresome yet wholesome group activities with her friends. And above all, the beautifully graceful and athletic Ursula loved dancing. Being raised as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints faith, she readily embraced the moral code of her religion: chastity, honesty, being charitable to any needy person, thrift, hard work, self-betterment, and above all, love of God and His Son, Jesus Christ. Ursula was the last of the four children of Josef and Gerda Appel. Her sister Marianne, being the eldest, preceded Ursula's arrival by four years. Then in quick succession came Fritz one year later, followed by Rudi the next year, and finally, another year later, the little baby of the family, "Nesthkchen" Ursula arrived. Being active in the LDS church, she participated in all the church activities. And at the age of seventeen, the beautiful Ursula caught the eye of a young LDS missionary from America named Don Wayne Rounds. At the conclusion of his church mission to Germany and his return to the United States, Don wrote a letter to Ursula, who promptly replied. Encouraged, Don quickly sent a second letter, which was followed by yet another eager response from Ursula. Thus an eighteen-month 'pen pal' relationship was born, culminating in his proposal of marriage, and her acceptance. In February of 1959, at the age of 19 years, young Ursula's TWA Airlines Constellation touched down in the dusty town of Albuquerque, NM, and Ursula and Don were married together for "time-and-all-eternity" in the LDS Mesa, Arizona, temple. This marriage was blessed with two beautiful babies -- a handsome boy named Steven Wayne, and beautiful little Deborah, a "spittin' image" of her lovely mother (Later on when Debbie was in her teen years, she and her youthful mother Ursula were frequently judged to be sisters)! Ursula was a devoted mother to Steve and Debbie, and the proud grandmother of 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Sadly, Debbie's twin boys Eric and Paul died at birth. The remaining children from Debbie and Brad Haslam are: Vince Haslam (Erin) and daughters Avery, Molly and Magnolia; Aaron (Danielle) Haslam and sons Oliver and Wyatt; Emily (Matt) Rogers and sons Jack, Charlie and Harry; and Meagan (Adam) Henrie. Steve and his wife Sharon's children are, in order: Danny Wayne Rounds (Kelly); Kimberly (Ryan) Lewis and daughter Dahlia Gerda [named in honor of Ursula Gerda]; and Amanda (Lucas) Maes and daughter Eisley; Ursula, in addition to being a loving, active, hands-on mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and an active member of the LDS church, had a stellar career in the Space and Satellite division of Sandia National Laboratories where her "no-nonsense" work ethic and "attention-to-detail" professionalism earned her great admiration and respect, both from her supervisors, and her peers as well. Ursula, having courageously fought off the deadly cancer Multiple Myeloma for almost 11 years, succumbed to its side effects on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday the 27th of November, 2014. Ursula died just two-and-one-half months short of her and Don's 56th anniversary of their wedding vows, solemnly made in the Mesa, Arizona, temple on Feb 12th, 1959. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, December 1, 2014 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Panorama Heights Ward, 300 Loma Colorado Boulevard NE, Rio Rancho, NM 87124. Interment to follow at Vista Verde Memorial Park, 4310 Sara Road SE, Rio Rancho, NM. In lieu of flowers donations may be given in Ursula's memory to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF). She was the first recipient of a kidney transplant in the state New Mexico and only survivor to this age from that era. Ultimately, her positive outlook on life in general allowed for this. She had numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, which were very dear to her heart. She loved relentlessly. She enjoyed the company of laughter, music, surprising others and most dearly, prayer. She will leave a huge void in many of our lives as she hands off the baton.
