Hayden -- Jeanne G. Hayden, 58, a resident of Albuquerque, died Monday, May 15, 2000. She is survived by her husband, Carol Hayden of Albuquerque; sons, David of Fairbanks, AK, and Brian of Albuquerque; step-daughters, Terri Bruing and Sandra Feldhake, and their families of Effingham, IL; father, Sylvester Gabrich and wife, Rose of Koppel, PA; sister, Crystel Gabrich and her family of Pittsburgh, PA; and brothers, Robert Gabrich and his family of Ashtabula, OH, and Richard Gabrich and wife, Charlotte of Vero Beach, FL. While still in high school, she knew she wanted to teach. And what a teacher she turned out to be. For more than 25 years, Jeanne Hayden found a multitude of ways to pass on her love for learning and her quest for knowledge. As a full-time teacher, parent-volunteer, and free-lance writer, Mrs. Hayden encouraged hundreds of students to read more, write clearly, and pursue their academic dreams. Alaine Daly, friend and fellow teacher said,"Whenever friends visited Jeanne, they were sure to find"little" stacks of books parked on end-tables, the coffee table, the dining room and kitchen tables, in addition to the collection on the floor to ceiling bookshelves in her study. She read everything from fiction to nonfiction. The library of her mind was a rich garden, which she shared with friends and students. In addition, she often hosted foreign exchange students from France, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe." A wife, mother, writer, and financial planner, Mrs. Hayden died after a ten-year battle with cancer. Mrs. Hayden was born July 19, 1941 in Koppel, PA, the daughter of Anne and Sylvester Gabrich. After attending local schools, she enrolled at Indiana University of Pennsylvania where she earned a Bachelor's of Science in 1963, and a Master's of Science in Social Studies Education in 1965. Mrs. Hayden began her career teaching elementary school in Pennsylvania for two years before taking a position with the Department of Defense schools in Germany where she taught for four years. There she met and married Carol Hayden, a major in the U.S. Air Force in 1969. They returned to the States to live in Florida and Illinois before moving to New Mexico in 1977. While living in Illinois and raising her family, Mrs. Hayden continued her passion for learning and taught elementary school for two more years. She also earned a Bachelor's degree in English Literature in 1974, and Master's degree in International Relations and Politics in 1978 from Southern Illinois University. From 1977-1996, Mrs. Hayden taught in Albuquerque Public Schools. She spent the last 11 years of her teaching career teaching English at Del Norte High School in Albuquerque. Her colleagues praised her as a helpful, enthusiastic instructor who pushed her students to do their very best. She was an excellent role model and mentor to her students, as well as to new teachers. Mary Juzang, Executive Director of Excel Educational Enterprise, said,"Jeanne was an excellent teacher. She was dedicated, extremely fair, and demonstrated the kind of tough love that today's kids need to keep on track. I admired her energy and ideas, and cherished our friendship." For the past 12 years, Mrs. Hayden also worked as a Registered Representative for Waddell and Reed Financial Planning Services. Her love for education and life-long learning were reflected in her wide and varied interests. Mrs. Hayden was a voracious reader and free-lance writer, whose works were published in popular magazines and local newspapers. She finished a novel and was working on a book for breast cancer patients. Her love for travel to foreign and exotic places gave her opportunities to practice her fluent French and German. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially skiing. She was a member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority and Phi Delta Kappa Educational Fraternity. Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, May 20, 2000, 11:00 a.m., at Prince of Peace Church, 12500 Carmel Ave. NE, with Father Antonio Mondragon, Celebrant.
