Obituary for Barela

Ray Barela Sr., 73, beloved father, grandfather, and brother, was called home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, May 16, 2000. Mr. Barela was born in San Mateo, NM to the late Jose Dario and Benita Barela. Ray served our country proudly in the U.S. Navy during World War II; he was a member of the American Legion Post 13, Disabled American Veterans, and Veterans of Foreign War; a parishioner of St. Anne's Catholic Church; he retired from the City of Albuquerque as a truck driver; he loved camping and family gatherings. He is survived by his loving children, Anthony Lovato of Rio Rancho, Ray Barela, David Barela, Grace Barela, Michael Barela, Jennie Barela, all of Albuquerque; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are one sister, Susie Sanchez; and one brother, T.J. Barela. He will be greatly missed by his loving family. Visitation will be today, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., in the chapel of Garcia Mortuary, located on 8th and Iron, where a Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m., this evening. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, 9:00 a.m., at St. Anne's Catholic Church. Interment will follow at San Jose de Armijo Cemetery. Casket bearers will be David Barela, Ray Barela, Michael Barela, Jose Dario Barela, Anthony Lovato, and Paul Chavez. Honorary bearers will be Junior (Jr.) Marquez and Archie Lucero. Funeral services are in the care of Garcia Mortuary, 717 Stover Ave. SW, 243-5222.
