ROMERO -- JOHN MARTIN Was born in Albuquerque, NM, July 24, 1945. He passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at the age of 66. John graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1963 and attended the University of New Mexico, graduating in 1971. He worked for the United States Postal Service, Social Security, OPM, and USIS. John will be remembered for his love of his family and how he thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents, Hilario and Mary Romero and by his brother, Larry Romero. He is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Frances Romero; two children, Paula and John Jr; sister, Phyllis; brother, Polidor and wife Sandy; three grandchildren, Krishauna, Marisa and Jenae; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and friends who loved and will miss him. A Graveside Funeral Service will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 1900 Edith NE., Friday, August 5, 2011 at 9:30 am. TUCKER -- MILDRED IRENE HOLLINGSWORTH Born April 19, 1915 Died July 27, 2011 96 years of age, Mildred, the daughter of Sadie and Ernest Hollingsworth, was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Basil Simms Tucker. She is survived by her daughter, Marji Tucker and son Ernest (Larry) Tucker together with his wife Sherrie; grandchildren David May (and wife Cheryl), Amber Valliant (and husband George), Melissa, Carlton, Shannon Hernandez (and husband Chris) and Tylor; great-grandchildren, JT, Frank, Alicia, Ashley, Donovan, Caitlyn, Aedyn, Rhiannan, Rachael, Amanda, Aaron and Matthew; and great-great-grandchildren Alexa, Drake and Alenah. Mildred was a self taught pianist and organist. She developed an amazing cake decorating talent, making many beautiful wedding cakes as well an unique birthday cakes. She crocheted, knitted, tatted, was an excellent seamstress and made ceramics. Her daughter and granddaughters benefited from these talents. We wish to thank the staff of Vista Care Hospice at Lovelace Hospital Downtown for their loving care for both Mildred and the family and visitors over the time that she was in their care. OPPERMAN -- FERN DELORES WOLCOTT Was born October 9, 1914 into a Christian family of Frederick Robinson Wolcott and Laura Mae Bradfield in Waterloo, IA. She had three sisters, Joy, Adaline, and Laura. At a young age, the family moved to Albuquerque for the health of her youngest sister. Fern eventually met and married Arthur Opperman, a preacher, from Kansas, on January 1, 1937. They were married for 64 years before his death in 2001. She had four children, daughter, Donna, sons, Robert and Larry, and daughter, Billie. Fern liked to talk about how romantic Arthur was, buying her beautiful cards and putting sweet love notes in them. Fern loved the Lord with all her heart. One of her favorite scriptures was "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord". She was preceded in death by her sister, Laura at age 4; her son, Robert at age 5; husband, Arthur at age 87; and her two other sisters, Joy and Adaline in recent years. Fern is survived by her three children, Donna, Larry, and Billie; six grandchildren, Terri, Shelly, Gina, Eric, and Jennifer; and by eight great-grandchildren, Samantha, Brittanie, Noah, Joey, Ashton, Jaden, Carlee, and Greg. Services will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2011, 10:00 a.m., at French -University Chapel. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE. ORTIZ -- LEO E. Beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, July 21, 2011. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Ortiz; sons, Patrick Ortiz and wife Jill of Coto De Caza, CA, Kirby Ortiz and wife Sara of Boise, ID, Michael Ortiz and wife Diana of San Clemente, CA; daughter, LeeAnn Ortiz of Albuquerque, NM; daughter-in-law, Sandra Ortiz; sister, Rosalie Walsh of Cleveland, OH; brother, Jimmy Ortiz of Charleston, SC; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leopold and Louisa Ortiz; sister, Ida Ortiz; son, Larry Ortiz. He was born in Raton, NM, in 1928, he experienced the depression like everyone else in that generation and came away stronger for it. When he turned 14 he attempted to enlist in the Navy but the recruiter sent him home. He had more success in 1943 when World War II was in full force and the military needed young men regardless of their age. He sailed into the Pacific aboard the aircraft carrier the USS Belleau Wood (CVL24) and for the next three years was a participant in major sea battles of the Asian Pacific war, Kwajalein, Truk, Saipan, Guam, Battle of the Philippine Sea (where planes from the Belleau Wood sank the Japanese carrier Haijo), Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He was the recipient of 12 battle stars. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He married Lorraine Potter and had 4 sons, Patrick, Kirby, Larry and Mike, and one daughter, LeeAnn. In the summer of 1951 and 1952 his search for work took him to Thule, Greenland where he worked on "Project Bluejay" building a military base. On his return the family moved to the shores of Lake Erie in Ohio. Leo was a member of Plumbers Local #55 of Cleveland, OH for 60 years. In 1979 they moved to NM where he retired. Leo was a quiet, un-assuming man. His legacy to his children is his work ethic which continues as an inspiration to all of us. PADILLA -- ROBERT J. Age 62, a resident of Belen, passed away Friday morning, July 22, 2011 surrounded by his loving family. His passion was his career as a car salesman. He loved working with his many customers and was awarded top salesman every year during his career. Robert worked for over 40 years with Hansen-Waldrop Ford, Valley Ford, Casey Luna Ford and Brad Francis Ford. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernesto and Carlota Padilla; brothers, Eloy and Larry Padilla; sister, Lucy Padilla; grandparents, Adolpho and Jesusita Padilla and Eduardo and Bonifacia Barreras; and brothers-in-law, Juan Sanchez and Wayne Johnson. Robert is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Loretta Sanchez Padilla; son, Steven Padilla and wife, Rebecca; daughter, Karlene Cordova and husband, Miguel; and grandchildren, Estevan Padilla and Diego and Mariah Cordova, his pride and joy. GARCIA -- JOHN 73, a resident of Albuquerqe, passed away on July 21, 2011. Mr. Garcia is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Loretta; his children, John Garcia, Lawrence Garcia, Rosemarie Garcia, and Cipriano Garcia and girlfriend, Ebassneska; his sisters, Lucy San Martin and husband, Mario, Amelia Griego, Irene Morris and husband, Pete, Connie Brill and husbad, Arthur, Pat Haslett and husband, Robert, and Erlinda Taylor and husband, Tim; his sisters in law, Rebecca Garcia and Mercy Garcia; his grandchildren, Eric Garcia and wife, Jennifer, Jessica Chavez, and Richard Chavez; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces, and nephews. SCHULZ -- MARY ELIZABETH Age 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 in Rio Rancho, NM. Her home was in South Euclid, OH, until she moved to Albuquerque in 1978. She was a registered nurse who took care of people all her life. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Mabel and Frederick Schulz and her sister, Harriet Speare. Mary is survived by four nieces and their families, Reverends Sue and Bob Haseltine of Stubenville, OH, and their daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Bruce Lancaster; Jan Speare and Bill Looney of Collierville, TN and their daughters, Kelley and Suzanne Stephens; Jennifer Doyle, and Kelley's son, Bradley Brown; Wendy Speare and Michael Rudahl of Albuquerque, and Dr. Mary Jean Speare and Dr. Larry Taylor of Harrisonburg, VA. COINER -- LEONARD LeRoy "BUD" Sr. 1935-2011 Age 75, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away on July 21, 2011. He was born in Kansas City, Kansas, and was a resident of Tome and formerly of Clovis, NM. Bud joined the Air Force in 1957 and served on the Air Police Squadron, specializing in canine training. He was dedicated to his work while with the BNSF Railroad until his retirement. He enjoyed gardening and dancing with his wife. He also loved welding and creating iron work for Bud's Western Art. When he wasn't doing that, he enjoyed watching old westerns and true crime investigations. He was preceded in death by his parents Edith Goff Coiner and William L. Coiner; son, Mark Coiner; daughter, Roberta Coiner; his brothers, Pete and Butch Coiner; sister, Lucille Bell; in-laws, Deluvina and Juan E. Zamora; stepson, Norman Otero; and step-great-granddaughter, Gabriella Otero. He is survived by his devoted wife of 23 years, Cecilia Coiner; his loving children, Cherri Coiner, Debbie Bradley and husband, Jamey, Leonard Coiner Jr. and wife, Beth, Linda Drake and husband, Doug, Teresa Baker and husband, Jim, and Larry Coiner and wife, Jenny; stepdaughters, Shawnee Otero, and Geri Gurule and husband, Randy; 16 grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and 2 step-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother James Coiner and numerous extended relatives and friends. Bud will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
