ARROYO, VICENTE F. JR. October 4, 1925 - January 16, 2015 Vicente Francisco "Rocky" Arroyo Jr. was born on October 4, 1925 to Austreberta and Vicente Arroyo in El Paso, TX. The youngest of three sons, he was an accomplished athlete, gifted student, and successful businessman. He was also extremely dedicated to his family. Vicente graduated from El Paso High School at the age of sixteen and attended the University of New Mexico (UNM) where he received a degree in electrical engineering. He also lettered in basketball, baseball and football at UNM. During that time, Vicente was given the nickname "Rocky" by the UNM athletic director Blanco White. Because he had a background in both basketball and mathematics, he was hired in 1947 at Our Lady of Sorrows High School in Bernalillo, NM as a teacher and coach. He built a basketball team that, despite the school's small size and lack of resources, won the District 3 championships three years in a row (1951, 1952, 1953). During this time he continued a semi-professional athletic career in Mexico, traveling to Cuba to play against the Harlem Globetrotters and to London to represent Mexico in the 1948 Olympics. He was the very first basketball coach at Valley High School, where he again taught mathematics. Although he loved teaching and athletics, Vicente chose to pursue a career as an engineer at Sandia National Laboratories. After retiring from Sandia, he had a very successful business career and founded several companies. He continued to be involved with athletics in various roles as a coach, educator and referee. He refereed high school championship games and also officiated numerous college football bowl games including the Peach, Japan, Fiesta, and Rose Bowls. Though Vicente was known for athletics and his careers, what he cared about most and what gave him the most pride was his large family. He married Alice Hernandez in 1948 and together, they had seven children. He lost his beloved Alice in 1974 to breast cancer. He later married Leonella Ortiz who had two children of her own, and then together they had one child. Surrounded by family in his home, Vicente peacefully passed away on January 16, 2015. Vicente will be remembered as a family man, mentor, coach and friend. He was recognized everywhere he went, and acclaimed for bringing victory to a school that did not at the time have an indoor basketball court. His family has always been especially gratified by the love shown to him by the people of Bernalillo, where he continues to be remembered as a hero. Vicente was also an avid golfer and a recognized figure in the local golfing community. He will be inducted into the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame on March 1, 2015. Vicente is survived by his loving and caring wife of 39 years, Leonella Arroyo; children Vince and Ruby Arroyo, Kathy and Eli Padilla, Sylvia and Rudy Nolasco, Bill and Joyce Arroyo, Aileen Arroyo, Carmen and Rick Trujillo, Andrew Arroyo, Chris and Sarah Arroyo, Martha Arroyo, Stephany and Jeffry Jones; as well as 23 grandchildren; eight great- grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Additionally, he is survived by a large, extended family who live across the country. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Ernesto and Hector Arroyo, his daughter Carmen Alicia Arroyo, his wife Alice Arroyo, his son Craig Anthony Arroyo & granddaughter Laura Kathleen Padilla. A Rosary will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 7:00 pm at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church, 5712 Paradise Blvd. NW, Albuquerque, NM 87114. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 10:00 am, also at St. Jude Catholic Church. She is survived by daughter, Glendora "Glennie" Brown and husband, James; her granddaughters, Loni Farzad and husband Anthony, and Leanne Sloan and husband Lance; seven great grandchildren, Jeremy Sloan and wife Sarah, Staci Narducci and husband, August, Amanda Torres and husband Chris, Shauna Durkin and Steve Garcia, Katie Hibbard and husband Danny, Conner Durkin, and Lili Farzad; 11 great-great-grandchildren, Evelyn and Lucca Narducci, Benjamin, Abraham, Judah and Grace Sloan, Isaiah and Hannah Torres, Haley Hibbard, Michael Rosley, Natty Garcia, and one on the way; brothers, Bill Isaacs and wife, Juanda and Vernon Isaacs and wife, Pat; and sisters, La Vada Archer, and Geneva "Neva" Rodgers. Audrey was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Oron "Ode" Joseph Coursey; son Michael Joseph Coursey; and eight brothers and sisters. She was born in 1922 to Jesse and Ida Isaacs in Konawa, Oklahoma, the fifth from the oldest of 13 children. Audrey was born and raised on "the farm" which is a major part of our heritage. Along with her brothers and sisters, music was at the heart of everything. Many, many wonderful days and nights the instruments and voices of the family and their beautiful music could be heard around the bend, and still can be to this day. Audrey (Nana) was raised to love Jesus, have a hard work ethic, and a servant's heart. Anyone that has ever known her well or met her for the first time would tell you that Jesus was first and foremost in her life and she was a witness to more people than we could ever know. She married Oron Joe Coursey in April of 1941 and lived in Konawa and Seminole, Oklahoma until 1953 when they moved to Albuquerque so Oron could manage Senator Anderson's ranch. Audrey retired from Sears as an interior decorator with many awards and accomplishments. Ode and Audrey (Nana and Papa) were dedicated members of the Southern Baptist Church where they dedicated their lives to serve the Lord in so many ways. Audrey taught Sunday school classes and sang in the choir and served in many different areas of the church. She taught her family how to love, serve, and be strong, not only by her words but through her actions. Her home always had an open door to anyone. Audrey had hardships throughout her life that would have brought most to despair, she lost her son Mike when he was just 21 years old, and yet she continued to love and serve without complaint. She survived breast cancer and thanked the Lord, and she cared for her husband, Ode (Papa), when he was very ill with an undying love and devotion, knowing that she could do all things through Christ who strengthened her. She loved her family and had more energy than all of us put together! Audrey only had one setting and that was "fast". Whether she was playing basketball with the kids, bowling, or showing us how to dance a jig, she did it with all of her heart. She taught her family the meaning of fun, dedication, and love. Audrey was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. OCCHIALINO, SALLY Sally L. Occhialino, age 70, an Albuquerque resident since 1977, died on January 16, 2015 at her home with her family after battling cancer. Born on January 6, 1945, Sally was the daughter of Joseph and Hazel La Forte. Sally is survived by her husband, Mario "Ted" Occhialino of Albuquerque; her children, Lisabeth Occhialino and husband Bruce Stimpson of Leesburg, VA, Anne Noel Occhialino and husband Jonathan Gannon of Silver Spring, MD, and Edward Occhialino and wife Amy of Portland, OR; her beloved brother, William La Forte and wife Ann of Rochester, NY; and her father, Joseph of Juno Beach, FL. Treasured grandchildren are Charlie and Sally Rose Stimpson, Kate and Nora Gannon, and twins, Mario and Dante Occhialino. Sally graduated from Poughkeepsie (NY) High School and from Mount Holyoke College, where she majored in philosophy and studied ancient Greek culture and language. While at Mount Holyoke, she met classmates Ellen Grove Petrone and Judy Rose Scheibe who became dear, life-long friends. After marrying Ted, a law professor, she worked at Harbridge House Consulting Group in Boston. Ted and Sally then relocated to Syracuse, NY where their children were born. Sally was known throughout the neighborhood as serving the best peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to the children who flocked to her home to play. In 1977, Ted and Sally moved to New Mexico. Although Sally was an East Coast gal, she bloomed in the desert. She served as the president of the Osuna Elementary School PTA, volunteered often at the Albuquerque Academy and with the symphony, was an active faculty wife, and made a wide network of friends. She later became an Academic Advisor at the Anderson School of Management at the University of New Mexico, where numerous students benefited from her wise counsel and warm support. Sally enjoyed traveling, and Ted's academic career took them to Maine, New Hampshire, New York City, Canberra, Australia and Washington D.C. for extended stays. She especially enjoyed visiting France and Ted's ancestral home of Lucca, Italy. Sally loved champagne, raspberries, bunnies, and a good party. She was an avid reader and liked to discuss politics and the New York Times' latest editorial. Sally made everything special; whether a holiday table or a well-wrapped gift, she made it memorable and unique. Sally was a superb cook and a gracious hostess who could whip up a dinner for twelve guests with an hour's notice from Ted. For Sally, Christmas was not just a holiday, but an event! She was well known for her annual Christmas party with traditional off-key singing at the piano, and she thrived on staying up all night wrapping gifts on Christmas Eve and then serving an elaborate champagne brunch on Christmas Day. Sally believed in dining only by candlelight, which is a view several grandchildren now share. Sally lived the last year of her life after her diagnosis the same as she lived all her other years: with dignity, grace and good humor, and on her own terms! Sally was a warm and generous friend; an outstanding wife, mother, sister, daughter, and grandmother; and a joy to know. Although we dearly wish Sally's life could have gone on a bit longer, we are filled with gratitude for the truly wonderful life she led and our chance to be part of it. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, February 1, 2015, 12:00 p.m., at the UNM Alumni Chapel, on the campus of the University of New Mexico with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Sally's name may be made online to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (jdrf.org).
