SANCHEZ, WILLIE DR. age 84, a resident of Las Vegas, New Mexico, passed away Friday, February 8, 2013. He was born on December 20, 1928 in Dixon, NM to Juan de Dios Sanchez and Corita Velarde-Sanchez. He enjoyed reading, writing, fishing, reminiscing and being with his family. A lifetime Catholic, he was a member of Immaculate Conception Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia Marie Sanchez; his parents, Juan and Corita Sanchez; infant sister, Adelaida Sanchez; brother, Ernest Sanchez; and grandson, Juan David Sanchez. He is survived by his six children, William "Billy" Sanchez, Beverly Sanchez and companion Louie Maestas, both of Las Vegas, NM; Lorenzo and Geraldine Sanchez of Arroyo Seco, NM; Mark Sanchez of El Paso, TX; Dolores Sanchez-Sena and Vernell Sena of Las Vegas, NM; and Tim Sanchez and wife Maria Seesz of Alamosa, CO. He is also survived by his four siblings, Corita Rodriguez of Albuquerque, NM; Steve and Judy Sanchez of Dallas, TX; Emily and Bill Kinzy of Albuquerque; and David and Evelyn Sanchez also of Albuquerque, NM; special friend Viola Garduno; and numerous grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Dr. Sanchez was born and raised in Northern New Mexico during the 1930's and 40's in a time when life in this area was rural and pastoral. The language, religion, culture and lifestyle had been unchanged for centuries. Schooled in the nearby St. Joseph Public High School, Willie excelled in all subjects. Music, literature, writing and mathematics became his passion. As a young boy his trumpet playing skills were evident and were often displayed at dances and fiestas in the surrounding towns. The family regularly spent their summers harvesting crops as migrant workers in the fields of the San Luis Valley of Southern Colorado. Before graduation from high school he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fairfield Suisun Army Air Base in Central California. When he was discharged he went straight to San Francisco and began working a day job and "blowing a horn" at night in the skid row bars of San Francisco. At his father's insistence he returned to New Mexico and entered Highlands University on the G.I. Bill. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Julie. She was vivacious, popular and Las Vegas- raised while he was quiet, studious and country bred. Their chemistry was immediate. The two embarked on an adventure of accomplishments, Willie devoured academia while Julie raised the family. Willie started his teaching career in Truchas, NM. He quickly became recognized as an excellent instructor. Willie was soon teaching at Espanola High School and, although he was but a few years older than his students, his influence on them was far-reaching. Accepting scholarship offers from many prestigious Universities including Colorado College and Washington University in St. Louis, MO, Willie and the family moved many times during this period, finally settling back in Las Vegas in 1964 to teach mathematics at Highlands University. Throughout his career as a College Professor and Administrator he was recognized As an innovator and free thinker. The family home became a gathering place for artists, politicians, bohemians and other like-minded types that emerged in this period. During Summer breaks the family would jump in the Volkswagen van and venture deep into Mexico. Avoiding the tourist spots they would sleep out in the trucker camps or small villages off the beaten path, absorbing the atmosphere and lifestyle of the interior. Dr. Sanchez was the first Hispanic Vice President of Highlands and served as Associate Academic Dean in the College of Education at the University of New Mexico. He taught in Quito, Ecuador for the University of New Mexico and spent Sabbatical in Guadalajara while Julie studied dance and art at La Universidad Autonoma. He wrote numerous proposals to garner funding for local educational institutes including the creation of Northern New Mexico College and Luna Community College. All these were done in the spirit of advancing the children and students of Northern New Mexico, who, like him, may not have had the chance at education. Both Willie and Julie believed in the spirit of education and creativity and spent their entire lives trying to encourage people to better themselves by advancing their education. Retiring Professor Emeritus in 1986, watching boxing, fishing, cruising and telling stories of his experiences were his pastime. Dr. Sanchez took sheer enjoyment in "wasting time constructively!" and hanging out at Dick's. He will be dearly missed. The family expresses special thanks to Qu i rina (Kitty) Herrera and all who aided in Dr. Sanchez's care. Rosary and Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 14, 2013 at 9:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church in Las Vegas, NM with Father George V. Salazar as Celebrant. Please visit our website: www.rogersmortuarynm.com to sign the online guest book and send a message to Dr. Sanchez's family or for more information. STRIBLING, MARTHA GOLDEN WILLIAMS Our mom, Martha Golden Williams Stribling left her frail earthly body on a bright winter's day, February 5, 2013. Her dynamic life began as a coal miner's daughter on February 26, 1918. Her parents Frank and Roxie Williams moved from Mt. Sterling, Kentucky seeking better health in Loving, New Mexico where Martha, the oldest of ten children lived and prospered on a farm. Her sister Marge Fate of La Jolla, California, her brother Lindel Williams of Phoenix, Arizona, and her brothers Brady and Colonel of Missouri are her remaining siblings. Her niece Randy Williams Kilman and her children Ronda and Rene were among those with whom mom enjoyed many good times. She had many friends some who knew her as Mabel. Martha met her future husband Tom on the tennis courts at UNM and they are now continuing their love of tennis in a heavenly realm. We wish them well! They began their early marriage years after dad's service in WWII and mom's work in the defense industry in San Diego and caring for their first son Tom on a Corrales farm. Dad turned his gift of salesmanship from apples to real estate and soon prospered in Albuquerque. He became an expert in trades and exchanges which he enjoyed more than sales and later both he and mom invested in and developed residential properties. They shared their love of nature and tennis with their seven children. When others would have retired in their 60's, Tom and Martha invested in their first seven Super Cuts shops that have now grown into 20, now prospering and managed by several of their children. All of their children live in Albuquerque. Tom III, Martha Joy, Margie, Steve, George, John, and Joel (departed). Tom and Martha have twelve grandchildren. Mom loved country living and always had many animals including dogs, cats, goats, horses, bunnies, raccons and always chikens on the farm. Martha stongly believed that nonone should ever go to lunch anywhere that did not serve a good martini. Mom loved life, had a wonderful sense of humor, an excellent investment saavy, loved a good scotch whiskey and a great game of tennis! Mom often did the daily chores after midnight listening to talk radio. She loved her kids most of the time. We will miss her! A Celebration of Martha's life will be shared at The Albuquerque Country Club, 601 Laguna Blvd SW, Albuquerque, New Mexico on Sunday February 17, 2013 from 2:00pm until 6:00 pm including a reception. In Lieu of flowers we welcome your donations to any of your favorite charities. Mom supported Joy Junction, The Edgar Casey Foundation and the Nature Conservancy.

WILLIAMS, VIRGINIA ECKHART known as Ginny to her family and friends, passed away at home on February 6, 2013, leaving us after struggling with pancreatic cancer. Throughout her final illness, she maintained remarkably good spirits, thanks to her quiet faith in the afterlife, support from her closely-knit family and her many friends, and knowledge that she had led a long and good life filled with love and achievement. Interment will be private, but there will be a public memorial service celebrating Ginny's life at the First Presbyterian Church, 215 Locust Street NE, at 1 PM on February 14, to be followed by a reception at the Fellowship Hall at the church. Ginny was born M. Virginia Jardine in Malden, Massachusetts, on July 20, 1926. While in high school, she moved with her family to Merchantville, New Jersey, where she made new high school friendships that lasted all her life. She graduated from high school in 1944, and because of her math skills, Radio Corporation of America (RCA) granted her a fellowship to study mechanical engineering drafting and design at Purdue, not exactly one of the more common career paths for high school girls at that time. While working at RCA, she met John Eckhart whom she married on November 15, 1947, and within a year the Eckharts moved to Albuquerque, where they both obtained jobs at what is now Sandia National Laboratories. In 1952, she took leave of her drafting career to give birth to her first child, Douglas (Doug). Though she had intended to return to work, Ginny's wonderful maternal instincts took over and after one look at her new baby boy, she knew she wasn't going to leave him to go back to Sandia. For the next 23 years, she put being a mom first, while giving birth to daughter Sylvia (in 1955), another daughter Audrey (in 1959), and a second son Curtis (in 1965). Once her children were in school, she found time for numerous side activities, including bridge, gourmet cooking, skiing, learning to fly an airplane, and being active in her church. In 1975, John Eckhart died, and Sandia invited her to come back to work. With money being tight and with all her children now being in school or having graduated, she accepted and resumed her drafting career, which later evolved into technical writing. She retired from Sandia in 1992, partly in order to help care for grandchild Chase. On May 31, 1987, she married David (Dave) C. Williams, a nuclear power safety analyst at Sandia, who happily proclaims that Ginny was the best thing that ever happened to him. Ginny's family warmly welcomed Dave and seemed to forget all about the prefix "step" in their relationship. Ginny and Dave shared innumerable family activities as well as a number of adventurous travels ranging from Antarctica to Machu Picchu and the Galapagos Islands to Australia and China to Iceland and Greenland, to mention a few. Ginny is predeceased by father Joseph Jardine, mother Mary Louise Jardine, and older brother George Jardine. She is survived by her husband Dave, her younger brother Chester (Chet) Jardine, her four children, and their respective spouses Jeanne Eckhart, Michael (Mike) Stearnes, Norman Ott, and Kristina Eckhart - all of whom cherish Ginny's memory equally, since Ginny honored her children's soul mates as she honored her children themselves. She is also survived by six beloved grandchildren: Sylvia's four children (Audrey and Arlen Moore with wife Kelly, Chase and Kiersten Stearnes), and Doug's two (Garrett and Terra Eckhart). Great-grandchildren are Landen Eckhart, and Jackson and Logan Moore. As Ginny goes to her final home, it is easy to envision a heavenly host welcoming her with the salutation from Matthew 25:21: Well done, thou good and faithful servant! Donations honoring Ginny in lieu of flowers may go to the First Presbyterian Church and/or the Lustgarten Foundation for pancreatic cancer research.
