AGUILAR -- JUAN SR. Born August 12, 1958, his soul was set free into Eternity on Friday, March 2, 2012 at the age of 53. Juan was preceded in death by his father Lazaro Aguilar, and mother Elida Garcia-Aguilar. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Brito-Aguilar; three sons Joshua Antonio Aguilar, Juan Aguilar Jr., and Isac Jerome Aguilar; daughter-in-law Erica Chavez-Aguilar; grandchildren, Marisa, Joshua, Josue, Angel, Adrianna, Angelica, Izabella, and Gabriel James; sisters, Susanna Sisneros, Nora Munoz, Elva Breedlove, Esther Aguilar; along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many loved and cherished friends. A Memorial Service celebrating Juan's life will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at New Life Church, 52 Unser SE, Rio Rancho, NM 87124 beginning at 2:00 PM. A Memorial Service where his ashes will be laid to rest with his mother and father will be held in Slaton, Texas on Saturday, March 17, 2012. Juan lived life to the fullest. APODACA -- LEROY LEE Age 61, beloved father, grandfather, son, and brother passed away in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Saturday, March 3, 2012. He was born July 16, 1950, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Lee was preceded in death by his father, Cipriano Apodaca; his mother, Albertina Santillanes-Lopez; his brothers, Joe Apodaca, Lawrence Apodaca and Benny Apodaca. He is survived by his children, Naomi Swallows, Joe Apodaca, Yvette Wyskocil, Gabriel Apodaca and Monica Duran; his brothers, Adam Montoya, Daniel Apodaca, Albert Apodaca, Rick Apodaca, Rudy Apodaca, Marvin Apodaca and Robert Apodaca; his sisters, Hazel Fulgham, Cipriana Cake, Theresa Hernandez, Gloria Markham, Angela Brownsburger and Fermina Apodaca. Lee was a proud father and grandfather who loved his children and grandchildren. A free spirit, with beautiful hazel eyes, who loved to dance, fish, tell jokes, laugh, oldies, read, animals and life. A vet who joined the army while he was still under age and served his country with honor in the US Army; a welder who excelled at his trade; and a talented artist who also cared for those who have a free spirit. Caring, passionate, energetic, Lee will be deeply missed but forever remembered. A Memorial Service, celebrating his life, will be held at Calvary Chapel of Albuquerque HUB, 4001 Osuna Road NE on Friday, March 9, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. A private ceremony, where his ashes will be spread, will take place on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. in Algodones, NM at his favorite fishing spot. BOYLE -- VIVIAN ELAINE A long-time resident of Albuquerque, passed away, surrounded by her family on Thursday the 1st of March. Born on September 13, 1924 in Elizabeth, NJ, Vivian was a proud member of the US Navy, stationed at Corpus Christi, TX as a Yeoman 2nd class. She went on to get her under graduate degree in French from Colorado College and then at age 55 continued her education at the University of New Mexico, from which she received a Masters in Public Administration. Vivian was active in democratic politics and worked for many women's issues throughout her life. She worked tirelessly with other women to help get the Equal Rights Amendment passed in NM, winning the Dorothy I. Cline award for her efforts. Vivian was dedicated to the League of Women Voters of Central NM and very involved in Planned Parenthood of NM, NARAL, NOW, and several other organizations over her life time. She also served on the Institutional Review Board for Presbyterian Hospital for over 20 years and was a volunteer for many years at UNMH (then BCMC). Vivian loved her life with her family and her beloved husband, Gerald. She was a fierce tennis player, walked Altura Park daily with dear friends and neighbors, and enjoyed swimming. In fact, she worked out twice a week with her personal trainer until she was 85. One of her favorite sayings was, "Abs in, chest, up, shoulders down and back!" And boy did she love a good joke - hearing and telling! She is survived by her three children, Michael, Joseph and Juliana, their spouses; Susan, Christina, and Michael, and her five beautiful granddaughters; Piper, Maggie, Emily, Cassie, and Juliana. There will be a memorial to her remarkable life at the UNM Alumni Memorial Chapel (nearest major intersection is Las Lomas and University) on Sunday, March 11 at 2:00PM with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest memorial gifts be made to the Gerald and Vivian Boyle Memorial Fund in Economics at UNM. BURKHOLDER -- JOHN Age 35, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away suddenly on March 4, 2012. John's primary parent was Cindy Smith who raised him from the age of nine until her death when John was 27. He grew up with three foster siblings, Kelley, Tanya, and Anthony, and attended Manzano High School. When John was 20, he became a member of a residential community for people with developmental disabilities run by ARCA. At the age of 28, he moved into a new home run by Maxcare. After Cindy's death in 2003 her surviving partner, Dr. Christina Vento, became his Guardian and parent. For the last seven years Dr. Vento has shared the joys and responsibilities of parenting John with her current partner, Chris Snyder. John had a keen sense of humor and touched numerous lives in his community. He had a zest for living and enjoyed movies, singing, dancing, bargain shopping at garage sales, fishing, and doing charity walks. John was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and Watermelon Mountain Ranch. He was employed part time through A Better Way of Living and received case management support with Selena Emener through Amigo Case Management. Cremation is planned and a Celebration of John's Life will be held at French - Lomas Chapel at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, 2012 with a light reception to follow. DAYHOFF -- METTA JEAN Age 87, a resident of Albuquerque, NM went to be with the Lord on March 7, 2012. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Herbert E. Dayhoff; children, Eric E. Dayhoff of Rio Rancho, NM, Brenda Smith and husband Roger of Albuquerque, NM; three grandchildren, Amber Dayhoff, Christopher Smith, Jordan Castillo; one great-grandchild, Nevea Clinton; brother, Sanford Bushman and wife Alice of Leavenworth, KS; sister, Juanita Chriestenson of Neosho Falls, KS. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Iva Bushman; grandson, Jarrod Castillo. She was born on the family farm near Neosho Falls, KS. She attended Pittsburgh State Teachers College, Pittsburgh, KS. After a short teaching career in a rural school she moved to Topeka and studied to become a dental nurse, working several years in a hospital dental clinic in Topeka. Along with her husband, Herbert, they owned and operated Dayhoff Shoes in Clovis, Gallup, Roswell and Albuquerque. She was a cherished wife, loving mother, grandmother, and best friend. Jean leaves a legacy of strength, courage, compassion and most of all...Love! GALLEGOS -- FORTUNATO G. Age 95, a resident of Villanueva, NM, died Tuesday, March 6, 2012. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Frances Gallegos; daughter, Eileen Gallegos-Lewis and husband, Ross; sons, Richard "Eugie" Gallegos and wife, Shariy Schuler, Anthony "Gary" Gallegos and wife, Pauline, and Charles "Chuck" Gallegos. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; brother, John Gallegos; and sister, Luciana Lucero; and many other family members and friends. Mr. Gallegos was preceded in death by his parents, Porfirio and Respecia Gonzales Gallegos; his brother, Piedad; and sisters Otilia and Cipriana. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Villanueva, NM. Forgee served our country honorably during WWII in the African and European Theater. He was the owner of Tito's Bar , a rancher, and was the first State Park Superintendent for the Villanueva State Park. GONZALEZ -- MERLINDA M. Age 89, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, died March 6, 2012. She is survived by her daughter, Olinda Gonzalez of Washington, DC; and son, Tom Gonzalez of Albuquerque; twin sister, Tillie Arrellano of Albuquerque; sisters-in-law, Ramona Martinez of Mora, and Hevila Montoya of Truchas; and many other nieces, nephews and friends. Mrs. Gonzalez was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend Tomas C. Gonzalez. In addition to her longtime services as a Presbyterian minister's wife, Merlinda was an elementary school teacher for many years in Columbus, IN and with the Albuquerque Public Schools. She attained a Bachelor's Degree from Highlands University and a Master's Degree in Education from Indiana University. Through the years, she was active in many roles connected to church activities including traveling with a nationally represented church group to Australia in the early 90's. She also served in leadership roles with the ADK Teacher's Sorority for many years in Albuquerque. Her other interests included poetry and her special concerns focused on social justice issues. Merlinda was known for her intelligence, and for her gracious extending to others. A Memorial Service and Celebration of her Life will be held Saturday, March 10, 2012, 1:00 p.m., at French - Wyoming Chapel. Rev. Rob Woodruff and Rev. Jaime Quinones of the Second Presbyterian Church will be officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park for family members and friends who wish to attend. HAWKES -- JAMES H. Age 75, passed away Monday, March 5, 2012. He was born in Albuquerque, NM on September 19, 1936, to Priscilla and James H. Hawkes, Sr., and was raised in Belen, NM. Among his many accomplishments, he was the Golden Gloves Boxing Regional Champion. He had a 10th Degree Black Belt in Shorin Ryu and was co-director of the United States Karate Alliance and the owner of Jim Hawkes Karate School in Albuquerque, which was the first of its kind. He served as an inspiration to young children and adults alike without regard to their background, race, color or creed. He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad as a Locomotive Fireman/Engineer and Lineman. James retired as a Deputy with the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department. He was preceded in death by his parents. James is survived by his wife, Suzanne E. Hawkes; children, John D. Becker and Amanda S. Becker; step-mother, Frances Leah Hawkes "Kika"; siblings, Dykes Leroy Hawkes, Clara Priscilla Hawkes, Dallas Whitney Hawkes, Marlene Genevieve Hawkes-Pisut, Daniel Howard Hawkes, Michael Anthony Hawkes and Elizabeth Ann Hawkes; special nephews, Christopher James Hawkes and Dallas Whitney Hawkes, Jr., whom he took under his wing; and many numerous nieces, nephews and friends. JENKS -- ELIZABETH G. Elizabeth passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 3, 2012, surrounded by her loving family. Elizabeth was born June 10, 1927 in Washington, D.C., and spent much of her youth on the family farm near Gloucester, VA. After graduating from Cornell University, Elizabeth made Albuquerque her home for the last six decades of her life. She loved her family, dogs and birds and was an active dog show exhibitor throughout the southwest. Her adventurous spirit, unique sense of humor and wonderful take on life took her around the world to Africa, Australia, South America, Alaska and Europe. She was passionate about helping people and animals. She did so by devoting many years of support to the Rio Grande Kennel Club, Albuquerque Biological Park, Rio Grande Nature Center, Wildlife Rescue, All Faiths Receiving Home, Doctors without Borders, Animal Humane Society of New Mexico, The Heart and Soul Animal Sanctuary, World Wildlife Fund and The Nature Conservancy. Elizabeth leaves many loved ones who grieve her passing: son Robert and his wife Anita; grandchildren Tony and his wife Susana, David and Phillip; great-grandchildren Anthony, Joshua and Sofia Elizabeth; sister Margaret Spidle; nieces Maggie Noland, Emily Long, Elizabeth Mullendore, Judith Keat, Amy Madison and their families. Elizabeth's family and friends were truly blessed by her presence and will miss her dearly. ROMERO -- EDDIE Our beloved father Eddie Romero, husband of the late Helen Romero, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2012. Eddie was born San Miguel County to his parents Jose Santurnino Romero and Maria De Los Angeles Maes. Eddie was the youngest of fourteen children. He was a Navy Veteran of WWII. Eddie was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and thirteen brothers and sisters. He is survived by one daughter Kathy Marie; two sons Gary and Ron. Our father will be laid to rest with his loving wife of fifty years at the Santa Fe National Cemetery on Friday the ninth at 2:00 pm. Thanks to the many friends and family who have offered support in this most difficult time.

ROMERO -- JOE, PASTOR Was born October 5, 1946 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He joined our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at the age of 65. Pastor Joe Romero was the Pastor of Inspiration Ministries, a Church focused on rehabilitating alcoholics, drug addicts, and helping the homeless, from 1978 to 1980 in an area considered to be the "War Zone". He also was the pastor of Church of Philadelphia from 1989 to present, with a continued focus in rehabilitating alcoholics, drug addicts, and helping the homeless. His ministry grew and Pastor Joe organized his church in providing food boxes for many families in Albuquerque. Pastor Joe had a generous heart for people in need. Pastor Joe Romero's present residence was in Albuquerque, New Mexico for 36 years. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Romero of Santa Fe, New Mexico and his stepfather, James Logue of Albuquerque; grandsons, Joseph Romero III (J.R.), and Westly Calton. He was a loving son to Felicia DelFrate and stepfather, Richard DelFrate; loving husband to his wife of 46 years, Edwina Romero; loving father to Paula and husband Paul Garcia, Sheila Calton, Georgia and husband Logan Garcia, Joseph (Toky) and wife Sally Romero; loving grandfather to Leah, Nathan, Samuel, Shelly, Dante, Shawnya, Jada, Sarah, Logan, Lael, Jacob, Ray, Natalie, T.J., Rebekah, Steven, and great grandchild Kali. He made every effort to sing, play, and cherish every moment with all his of his grandchildren. Pastor Joe was a loving brother to Susan Griego and husband John Griego, Dr. William Logue, Rosie Dixon and husband Jerry, Bernard Logue Y Perea and partner John Howard, Patrica Logue, Joyce Ann and husband Greg Gonzales, Laura and husband Tom White, Pastor Charles Romero and wife Cyndi. SCHARF -- RONALD CARL Age 83, beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully, while surrounded by his loving family on Monday, March 5, 2012. He was born November 19, 1928 to in Aurora, IN and was a resident of Albuquerque, NM. Ronald was a proud veteran of the United States Army. After working for an electric power plant in Indiana for 34 years he retired and moved to Florida for 17 years. Then he moved to Albuquerque in 2005 to be near his family. He enjoyed volunteering and serving with his Churches in Indiana, Florida and Albuquerque. He also spent 15 years helping build houses for Habitat for Humanity in Florida. SHATTUCK -- ROMALDA Was born in Isleta Pueblo, NM on November 12, 1920; the fourth child of Paul and Beatrice (Abeita) Shattuck. She passed away on March 6, 2012. She attended Albuquerque Indian School, graduating in 1939. She then attended Highlands University receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1944. She is survived by sisters Agnes Dill, Isadora Sarracino, Veronica Chapman; brother Paul Shattuck, Jr.; nieces and nephews Woodrow Shattuck, Paula Shattuck, Beatrice Shattuck, Johnnie Wardlow; numerous grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, August and Joe Shattuck. Romalda became a career teacher, working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs for 33 years. She worked at Indian reservation schools in Arizona, Oklahoma and New Mexico. At the Albuquerque Indian School, she was a teacher in the Fifth Year Special Navajo Program for children ages 14-18, who had no previous education. She helped students make the adjustment from reservation life to city life. Romalda also team-taught science and 7th and 8th grade. In the fifties, Romalda was trained by the Air Force to be a civilian volunteer in the U.S. Ground Observer Corps. She received awards for meritorious and distinguished service and was made an honorary member of the U. S. Air Force. For 30 years, Romalda was a member of the New Mexico Council of American Indians. This organization began the Indian Village at the New Mexico State Fair. The New Mexico Commission of the Status of Women honored her for her contributions to the Indian Village. Romalda has also been a board member of the Middle Rio Grande Red Cross. She was very active in the North American Indian Women's Association and she also was a long-time volunteer and board member of the Friends of the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. Highlands University honored her and her family as The Distinguished Family of 2002. A visitation will be held on Friday, March 9, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at French, University Chapel, 1111 University Blvd NE. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on March 10, 2012 at French, University Chapel. Interment will follow at Isleta Pueblo Cemetery, Isleta, NM. YERKES -- VERN PATERSON Age 83, answered the Lord's call home peacefully on March 4, 2012 at his home in Paradise Hills, Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was lovingly surrounded by his family. He was born in Vinton County, Iowa on September 12, 1928 to Dorothy Lenore (Paterson) (deceased) and Leslie Elbert Yerkes (deceased). Vern attended elementary school in a one-room schoolhouse in Vinton County, Iowa. He graduated from Vinton High School and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict. He then went on to obtain his Bachelor's of Science Degree from Colorado State University in May of 1957. Being the type of individual who always strived to continue learning throughout his life, Vern went on to receive his Master's of Science Degree from Oregon State University and his Doctoral Degree from Colorado State University . He spent his career working for the United States Forestry Service from which he retired in 1983. Following his retirement, Dr. Yerkes spent several years in private consulting which took him to many places in the world including Italy, Columbia, Canada, Honduras, South Africa, and the Philippines. Vern was a master leather crafter and enjoyed expressing himself in the craft along with passing it on to the following generations. Vern is survived by his beloved wife Bevy Doreen Leonard whom he married on March 7, 1953. He is also survived by his children Kirk, Terry and husband Michael, Kristy and husband Don, and Mark and wife Debbi; his seven grandchildren Nathan, Aimee, Christopher, Geoffrey, Lucas, Stephanie, and Jennifer; and his two great-grandchildren Dominic and Maddox; and his sisters Virginia Pollack and Evelyn Plache. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers Everett Yerkes and Floyd Yerkes and his sister Marion Studnika. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 10:00 am at First Baptist Church of West Albuquerque. Following cremation, he will be interred at the National Veterans Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Special thanks are extended to the Heritage Hospice Center and all of Vern's doctors throughout this time who answered unfailingly for any help that was needed by both Vern and his family.
