BARELA -- MARY F. Age 77, a resident of Albuquerque for eight years and a former resident of Chimayo, passed away Wednesday, December 7, 2011. She is survived by her daughter, Veronica C. Apodaca and husband, Lawrence; son, Jack A. Barela; granddaughter, Monique N. Apodaca, all of Albuquerque; grandsons, Anthony Barela and wife Kim of Boulder, CO, Chris F. Barela and Gabby of Santa Fe; great-granddaughters, Faith Kateri and Keirgan; sisters, Maria Cora Gibson and husband, William of Los Alamos, Veronica Ortiz of El Rito; and brother, Andrew Jose Ortiz of La Jara, CO. Mrs. Barela was preceded in death by her husband, Crestino F. Barela, daughter, Angelina Elizabeth Barela, her first husband, Henry C. Kahl, parents and ten brothers and sisters. Mary was a member of Holy Family Church, Chimayo NM, Risen Savior Catholic Church, and The Choral Group. BUGOS -- ROBERT MERRILL Age 48, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, December 12, 2011. He was born in Homestead, PA on January 2, 1963, to Michael and Jean Bugos. Mr. Bugos graduated from Grove City (PA) High School in 1980. He attended and received a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Penn State University. He was a diehard fan of the music group, Rush! Employment at Sandia National Laboratories brought him to New Mexico in 1984 where he was employed at the time of his death. He was a brilliant engineer whose insight and innovative spirit enabled many important technological advances, and there wasn't a problem he couldn't solve once he put his mind to it. He was a leader and mentor who will be deeply missed. Though he never served in the US Armed Forces, his contributions to their safety can only be matched by his deep and abiding patriotism. His greatest joy came from his family. Mr. Bugos was affectionately known as the "Dance Mom" and "Sound Man" for his daughters' dance productions at Elite Dance Studio in Albuquerque. His computer skills allowed him to engineer the music for their dance routines. He, also enjoyed coaching his sons' soccer teams. A man of few emotions, the birth of his grandson, Mason, and the love he has for his children could bring tears to his eyes. He was so proud of his family. Mr. Bugos, also enjoyed remodeling his home and fixing cars. All who know him will forever remember him as very generous and kind. His presence will be deeply missed. There is a huge hole in our hearts that not even the million memories we have of him can fill. He was preceded in death by his father, Michael Bugos in 1984. Robert is survived by wife of twenty years, Donna J. (Lawlor) Bugos of Rio Rancho, NM; mother and stepfather, Jean and Dewey Rearick of Grove City, PA; children, William, Wesley and Chelcie Hammond, and Jacob and Allyson Bugos, all of the Albuquerque and Rio Rancho area; beloved grandson, Mason Hammond, of Rio Rancho, NM; sisters, Diana Gray and her husband, Barry, and Dorothy Densmore; brother, Rev. Alan Bugos and his wife, Karen; sister-in-law, Katherine Olds and her husband, Brandon; brother-in-law, Rev. Michael Lawlor and his wife, Terry; nieces and nephews, Leslie and Michelle Decker, Kristen, Stephanie and Jessica Bugos, Andrea Laughridge, Terri and Robert Densmore, Megan and Bailey Olds. DOMINGUEZ -- GEORGE L. Family and friends mourn the loss of George L. Dominguez, a resident of Albuquerque since 1943, who passed away on December 11, 2011 at 95 years of age. Mr. Dominguez is survived by his wife and devoted companion of 76 years, Josephine. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Dominguez retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Albuquerque District in July, 1970 after 35 years of distinguished service. During his years with the Corps he held many and varied assignments in the areas of administration, engineering and construction. Mr. Dominguez joined the Corps in 1936 at the Tucumcari District, working on the construction of Conchas Dam. He rose through the ranks and for the 17 years prior to his retirement he served as Personnel Officer for the District. Mr. Dominguez received many awards and citations for his outstanding service to the Army Corps of Engineers. In 1992 he was inducted into the Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees for the Corps of Engineers. In his significant contributions in placing women and minorities in positions with led to upward mobility long before the establishment of formal Equal Employment Opportunity programs. Mr. Dominguez was also recognized for his successful recruiting of engineers for the Corps from throughout the country and overseas, during the construction of 12 Atlas Missile Complexes, one of the largest and most important projects in the Albuquerque District's history. Mr. Dominguez's tenure with the Corps was interrupted by a tour of duty with the United States Marine Corps, 6th Marine Division during World War II. Mr. Dominguez served in Guadalcanal, Guam, Okinawa and the initial occupation of Japan as well as the formal surrender of the Japanese at Yokosuka Naval Base on September 2, 1945. Mr. Dominguez was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, 6th Marine Division Association, NARFE and the Society of American Military Engineers. A loving father and grandfather, Mr. Dominguez is survived by his son, Don and wife, Phyllis of Midland, TX, son, Larry and wife, Margaret of Annandale, VA; daughter, Rita Chavez and husband, Lolo; daughter, Barbara Calderon of Albuquerque as well as seven grandchildren of eleven great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Mr. Dominguez's grandchildren, Kathy Kilgore, Michael Dominguez, Kim Dominguez, Marie Therese Dominguez, Christa Gormley, Damian Calderon, Melanie Calderon, and Michael Morrow. A special thank you to Sena Swinney and Lila Howell from the Mesa Arriba Assisted Living Facility for their loving care of Mr. Dominguez. Also, we would like to thank Presbyterian Hospice at Ana Kaseman. GARCIA -- JUAN ISIDRO Age 69, a resident of Albuquerque, went to be with the Lord Friday, December 9, 2011. He is survived by his wife, Beatrice L. Vigil-Garcia of Albuquerque; daughter, Beverly Garcia; son, Robert T. Garcia and wife, Dawn Marie; daughter, JoAnn Garcia all of Colorado; daughter, Victoria Wambaugh and husband, Guy of Michigan; brothers, Nestor Garcia of Puerto de Luna, Esequiel Garcia Jr. and wife, Oma; Arsenio Garcia and wife, Mary; Mike Garcia and wife, Laverne; sisters, Isabel Anaya all of Albuquerque and Tircia Garcia of Puerto de Luna, and family and friends. Mr. Garcia was preceded in death by his parents Esequiel Garcia Sr. and Victoriana Garcia; brothers Luis Garcia and Vidal Garcia; and sister Josefina Nieto Juan was a loving husband and caring father and brother. He was a proud grandfather to Shala, Jared, Blake, Vanessa, Jessica, Nichole, and JC and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Garcia graduated from Santa Rosa High School. He served 20 years in the US Air Force. Juan retired from the NM Department of Labor in 2005. He is best remembered for his kind and loving nature, sweet disposition, his sense of humor, his strength and his support. MCELYEA -- ULYSSES JR. Was born on October 27, 1941 in Ft. Collins, Colorado to Ulysses McElyea, Sr. and Hazel Hall McElyea. Ulysses, affectionately known as "Jr." or "Doc" graduated from Las Cruces High School in 1959. After working as a pharmacist, he decided to follow in his father's footsteps; in 1967 he received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Colorado State University. He then earned a Master's Degree in Animal Eye Diseases. Upon graduation, Ulysses enlisted in the United States Army and was commissioned as a Captain while working in the animal research laboratories in Ft. Detrick, Maryland. After completing his military obligation, he returned to Las Cruces and became a partner with his father at Alta Vista Animal Clinic. He devoted several years to playing in the Big Band on the Rio Grande and in the Mesilla Valley Community Band. During a band trip to Lerdo, Mexico, Ulysses met the love of his life, Natalia Bertha Zarzosa. They were married in Las Cruces on April 29, 2000. His new family included two young children, Ulysses McElyea III and Natalia McElyea. Much of their vacation time was spent in Torreon, Mexico and at their time share in Mazatlan. In 2009 he was named the #1 veterinarian in the state of New Mexico. He is survived by his wife, Natalia; his son, Ulysses McElyea III; his daughter, Natalia McElyea; and grandson Donald. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Ulysses McElyea and Hazel McElyea. Visitation will be at Getz Funeral Home on Thursday, December 15, 2011 5:00 - 7:00 pm. Funeral Services will be held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church Friday, December 16, 2011 at 10:00 am. MCNULTY -- BETTY On December 12, 2011, our mother, grandmother and friend, Betty McNulty left us to join her husband and siblings. Betty loved children and had seven of her own. She was a very strong and independent woman who was loved by everyone she met. Betty will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by all who knew her. She was an extremely caring and giving woman who was always there to help anyone in need. RAGAN -- MARJORIE Born in Monte Vista, CO, Marjorie passed away on Friday, December 9, 2011. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, R.B. Ragan; her mother Dorothy Brawn; and grandson Christopher Caswell. She is survived by her daughters: Cathy Caswell, and husband Bill, along with their son Jeremy, Sandra Ragan of Albuquerque, NM; brother James Seamster, and wife Nancy of Phoenix, AZ; along with several nieces and nephews. She was employed by Albuquerque National and Sunwest Banks both part-time and full-time for 22 years. She was a member of First Methodist Church as well as a member of the Boy's Club Auxiliary, Jaycee Wives, Desert Bloomers Garden Club, and also on the Board of the Albuquerque Rehab Center. She graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1948, and attended Colorado Women's College in Denver, CO. Marjorie was blessed to have many wonderful friends that were all special to her. She is survived by partner, Nancy Jo Archer; daughter Rita Brockhoff and husband Peter, daughter Linda McAteer and husband Jack; son Joe Roney, son Randy Roney; brother Frank Murillo and wife Beth, brother Robert Murillo and wife Caroline; ex-husband Paul Roney; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Gloria came into this life with a determination to learn, to act and to make a difference and she accomplished all three. Her most important role was as a mother. Her children were always first and foremost in her life and she always was immensely proud of them, their uniqueness and their many accomplishments. While raising her four children, she returned to school at the University of Texas at Austin where she obtained a Masters Degree in Social Work and graduated magna cum laude. Upon her families return to Albuquerque, Gloria obtained a position at Hogares Inc., a treatment center for children and adolescents. Based upon her skills and commitment she quickly became the Clinical Director, a position she held for over twenty-five years. During this time she developed a number of programs which were new concepts at the time which included: community based Residential Treatment Centers, Treatment Foster Care, and Transitional Living to name a few. Gloria imparted her philosophy of youth and families always came first. She dedicated her career to Hogares and thousands of youth, hundreds of staff and countless other professionals were impacted by her leadership. Throughout her life, she loved being with her family, learning, traveling, music, and dancing. She competed in ball room dancing and often won in her class. After retirement her last years were spent confronting the dilemmas of Alzheimer's. Typical of Gloria, she handled this devastating disease with grace, dignity and humor. Gloria was a woman with a beautiful soul who touched everyone whose lives came into contact with hers. She was smart, a life long student, courageous and committed to making our community a better place for children and families. The family is deeply grateful for the wonderful staff and excellent care provided by The Retreat operated by Lena Smith, PhD. The Rosary will be recited Thursday, December 15, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. The Memorial Mass will be on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at 9:00 a.m. Both events will be held at St. Therese Catholic Church, 300 Mildred NW, Albuquerque. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. WHITAKER -- FANNIE F. Age 78, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on December 12, 2011. Mrs. Whitaker is survived by her children, Robert Whitaker and wife, Elayne Whitaker, Vanessa Whitaker, and Fred Whitaker and wife, Edna; a special niece, Mischel Crain; her grandchildren, Dee, Cory, Brenda, Rochelle, Erica, Leanne, Tim, Amber, Allonna, and Mariah; twelve great-grandchildren; and many other nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Mrs. Whitaker was preceded in death by her husband, R.P. Whitaker; and her parents, Hubert and Tessie Burnley. Visitation will be Thursday, December 15, 2011 in the Gabaldon Memorial Chapel, from 6:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., Pastor Darnell Smith, presider.
