RONEY -- GLORIA MURILLO Passed away on December 10, 2011. She was preceded in death by her parents Rita and Juan Murillo and brother John Murillo. She is survived by partner, Nancy Jo Archer; daughter Rita Brockhoff and husband Peter, daughter Linda McAteer and husband Jack; son Joe Roney, son Randy Roney; brother Frank Murillo and wife Beth, brother Robert Murillo and wife Caroline; ex-husband Paul Roney; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Gloria came into this life with a determination to learn, to act and to make a difference and she accomplished all three. Her most important role was as a mother. Her children were always first and foremost in her life and she always was immensely proud of them, their uniqueness and their many accomplishments. While raising her four children, she returned to school at the University of Texas at Austin where she obtained a Masters Degree in Social Work and graduated magna cum laude. Upon her families return to Albuquerque, Gloria obtained a position at Hogares Inc., a treatment center for children and adolescents. Based upon her skills and commitment she quickly became the Clinical Director, a position she held for over twenty-five years. During this time she developed a number of programs which were new concepts at the time which included: community based Residential Treatment Centers, Treatment Foster Care, and Transitional Living to name a few. Gloria imparted her philosophy of youth and families always came first. She dedicated her career to Hogares and thousands of youth, hundreds of staff and countless other professionals were impacted by her leadership. Throughout her life, she loved being with her family, learning, traveling, music, and dancing. She competed in ball room dancing and often won in her class. After retirement her last years were spent confronting the dilemmas of Alzheimer's. Typical of Gloria, she handled this devastating disease with grace, dignity and humor. Gloria was a woman with a beautiful soul who touched everyone whose lives came into contact with hers. She was smart, a life long student, courageous and committed to making our community a better place for children and families. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hogares Inc., 1218 Griegos, NW, Albuquerque, 87107 or the Alzheimer's Association. The family is deeply grateful for the wonderful staff and excellent care provided by The Retreat operated by Lena Smith, PhD.
