SANCHEZ -- John S. Sanchez, born to Felipe and Juana Maria Sanchez, started his life's journey on July 21, 1921 in Belen, New Mexico. John was welcomed into God's tender loving hands January 19, 2010 during the calm hours of the evening. John's wife, Elsie, who preceded him in death, was at the gates of Heaven joyously awaiting John's arrival. John was a dedicated and loving husband of 24 years. His treasured, pure, courageous soul was commended into God's hands surrounded by his family. He was a devoted Father of three children, his daughter and her husband; Sally Sanchez-Vigil and Will; his eldest son and wife; John and Gloria Sanchez; and youngest son and wife; David and Gerti Sanchez. He was the proud Grandfather of four granddaughters: Amy Sanchez-Fonseca, Lilliana Sanchez, Elisia Jaramillo and Lisa Sanchez. John came from a family of six children, of which Anita, Manuela, Van and Horace preceded him in death. Steve Flavio Sanchez is John's last surviving sibling; with whom John had a strong relationship. John was a family centered soul, with a peaceful regard for others, which made him the family "rock" and advisor! John received these wonderful qualities from his parents, Felipe and Juana Maria, who entrusted John into God's hands when John enlisted, to proudly serve America in World War II, as a Corpsman in the European theater. He was in Company B, in the 339th Infantry Regiment of the 85th Infantry Division. For his Courage, after being wounded and taken Prisoner of War for nine punishing months, John was awarded the Purple Heart. After returning from the war, John became an AEC/DOE Security Inspector. He and his wife Elsie settled in Albuquerque, where they raised their three children. John blessed his family with his unique sense of humor! He kept himself well-informed and loved to "sit around" discussing politics. John's knowledge of government and politics could have earned him an honoree degree in political science. His love for this inspired two of his granddaughters to become political scientists. He was an avid boxing fan, and had passions for dancing, musicals, and music. John proudly taught his granddaughters how to dance. John will be greatly missed by his family and the community, but he would not have wanted us to be sad, for John would have smiled at us cheerfully with his beautiful green eyes and said, "Let your smile be your umbrella."
