HEIN -- Sarah Ellen Smith, 82, of Albuquerque went home to the Lord on Wednesday, July 29, 2009 surrounded by her family. She was born to Leland Alexander and Leslie Faye Wood Smith, on December 14, 1926 in Sam Fordyce, Texas and was raised in Mission, Texas. Sarah married Carl Richard Hein of Pharr, Texas after stealing his favorite jacket and later his heart. Sarah and Carl traveled the U.S. as an Air Force family in a variety of vehicles and gypsy camp trailers always staying with friends and family. Sarah never met a stranger and had family scattered from Mississippi to Washington State. In 1967 the final Air Force duty station brought Sarah and family from Anchorage, Alaska to Albuquerque, NM where Asbury UMC became their church home for over 30 years. Her life's passions involved her family and church. Sarah was a member of United Methodist Women, rang hand bells, sang in choirs, taught Sunday school and baked many pies for the Asbury Cafe. She ran a tight schedule making sports, music and scout runs long before the age of the hurried child. Sarah was the matriarch of the kitchen whether camping or at home. Mealtimes together usually involved applesauce, spirited discussions and at least one spilt glass. The four children fondly remember chicken potpies, bologna, spaghettios and wooden spoons. Carl, her husband of 51 years, precedes her in death, as do her parents and infant brother Wallace David. Sarah is survived by her brother LTC Harlan Dean Smith (USAF ret.) of San Antonio, TX; sister Betty Lee Trotti of Jackson, MS; daughter Cheryl Lynne and husband COL Stanley W. Johnston Jr. (Army ret.) of Corrales, NM; son MAJ David Richard (USAF ret.) and wife Nancy of Roswell, NM; son William Leland and wife Penny of Rio Rancho, NM; and son MAJ Edward Neal (Army ret.) of Rio Rancho, NM. KELSEY -- Norman Kelsey's amazing life ended in Albuquerque, New Mexico on July 28, 2009 after a short illness. He was 93. Norm exemplified the Greatest Generation, witnessing and participating in events of the last century that drew upon his seemingly limitless strength and helped form his rock-solid character. He was born in Steelton, Pennsylvania on January 21st, 1916, the youngest of five children. He graduated from Steelton-Highspire High School and helped support his family during the Great Depression. Norm enlisted in the Army when the United States entered World War II and rose to the level of Captain with the "Hell on Wheels" Second Armored Division. He participated in the Normandy invasion, helped liberate France, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, served in occupied Berlin, and earned the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and a special citation for distinguished service. Although he rarely talked of his war experiences and never bragged about them, he was truly an American hero, serving his country with honor, sacrifice and distinction. Norm returned home after the War and married Ruth Sheetz. He resumed his career with Central Iron and Steel, later to become Phoenix Steel. During his career Norm worked as a laborer in the Steelton mills, became a salesman and sales office manager in Boston and New York, and in 1966 was promoted to an executive position in the company's Claymont, Delaware headquarters. Norm loved the steel business and regretted the decline of the American steel industry as factories closed and operations moved to other countries. He retired from Phoenix Steel in 1976, moving first to Charleston, South Carolina, and then to Albuquerque New Mexico, where he spent his last 21 years, remaining active and vibrant throughout his long retirement. Norm's greatest passion was his family, with whom he spent many wonderful vacations and visits. While Norm lived a modest lifestyle, he was hardly old-fashioned; in his later years he embraced the use of emails to engage in many debates and exchanges with family and friends, always engaging but never opinionated, eager to hear other points of view. Norm loved people, his quick wit and love of conversation endeared him to all who were lucky enough to meet him. He could talk as easily to people of his own generation as with those a fraction of his age. While Norm drew upon the wisdom he gained through his long life, he never looked back at the "good old days," remaining optimistic and forward thinking, believing that the best was yet to come. Norm was predeceased by his parents Benjamin and Beatrice, his brothers Edward and Benjamin, and sisters Ethel and Edith. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Ruth Kelsey; daughter Diane Hice and her husband Don of Albuquerque; son Michael Kelsey and his wife Cynthia of Wilmington; granddaughters Jacqueline, Jessica, Anne and Elizabeth; and great-grandson Corbin. Contributions to celebrate Norm's rich life can be made to the Presbyterian Hospice at 8300 Constitution Ave, NE. Albuquerque, NM 87110

MCDOWELL -- MARY JANE, 72, was born in August, 1936 in Oklahoma City and passed away in Albuquerque in June, 2009. Mary Jane was a teacher, one remembered fondly by hundreds of former students, those she taught as recently as earlier this year back to her beginning years in Houston in the late fifties. She supported children to be the best that they had it in themselves to be in their terms. Full of humor and surprises as well as lots of reading, social studies and math in her classrooms, every sort of student found a way to learn and succeed. Jane's friends remember her as a voracious reader and a boon companion: one with a great sense of humor ready to do something fun, always aware of the latest cosmetics and collector of great purses. She loved her Basset Hounds, the most recent, Chloe II who was adopted into a loving home. Jane leaves behind many friends in Albuquerque, Oklahoma City, Houston and Terra Haute, IN, the Chi Omegas from Oklahoma State, her dear sister-in-law, Ida McDowell of Houston, and her beloved godson, Jeremy Mallory of Chicago. Her friends will gather to remember and celebrate Jane in the near future. Memorial contribution can be made to the Animal Humane Association.

RAMOS -- Ralph S. Ramos. My Superman flew to heaven at 7:05 pm on July 29, 2009. He lived a fulfilled and abundantly blessed life with me, his wife, Elaine Ramos, and his two awesome daughters, Mercedes and Miranda. Strong, sweet, kind, loving, and smart were his insignia. He was born on May 17, 1959 in a clinic in Tularosa, New Mexico to his beloved parents Modesto and Maria Ramos. He grew up learning to value hard work while working at the farm and his father's car shops from very early ages until he reached college. He left his sisters; Vivian Murphy, Monica Otero, and brother; Ray Ramos a model of life worth living and one all of us will cherish, honor and respect. He received his Bachelor's in accounting in 1982 from NMSU. His work in accounting was not as rewarding as his time spent at the forest fires all over the country during the last 17 years of his employment at the U.S. Forest Service as an Assistant Director of Financial Management. Retirement began one week from March 6, 2006 after his diagnosis of a devastating terminal illness, ALS. Although severely punished by this disease for the next 3 years and 4 months, Ralph always chose to fight. He pioneered paths for living with ALS that many could not take by being the first ALS patient in New Mexico to elect a tracheostomy and ventilator support to continue life. He only did this for his family as he did "not want to miss anything" and wanted to "grow old with me". Ralph's choices during this fight were always courageous and cutting edge. He never gave up no matter how difficult each day could possibly be for him. He enjoyed living and watching his many family and friends live representing him. His journey was closely shared with many droves of volunteers of family and friends who prayed, cared, loved and supported him in all ways possible. We pray his life and faith will impact all those who loved him. Ralph wants to honor his Tularosa family by reciting a rosary at French Mortuary, 9300 Golf Course Road NW, on August 6, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with a public viewing at 10:00 a.m. to be followed by a memorial procession to Calvary Chapel, 4001 Osuna Rd NE, with a beautiful tribute to his life at 2:00 p.m. and a potluck reception, "like the old days", is what Ralph requested. We want to thank you for all you did for us..God knows those hearts that give without expecting back. Thank you. Please visit our online guest book for Ralph at RememberTheirStory.com. WARD -- Nita Rae, a resident of Albuquerque since 1945 passed away peacefully in her home on July 24, 2009 following a stroke suffered in August of 2003. Nita was born June 27, 1921 in Chicago, IL and attended James T. Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois where she met and married a fellow musician, Harold Ward. After his time in the Army Air Corp during World War II, they moved to Albuquerque, to live and raise their children. Nita was very active in the community. She played the organ (and directed the junior and adult choirs at different times) at Rio Grande Presbyterian Church for 52 years. Nita and Harold also played and sang for weddings and funerals across the city for many of those years. Nita also served the church as a deacon and in many other activities through the years. She sang in the ABQ Civic Chorus and Light Opera, and was a PEO member. She worked on the ABQ Beautification Committee, many garden club events and lead numerous young people's groups: choir, scouts, garden club. She called herself a river rat, because she loved any and all water activities and each spring and summer she'd get at least one raft full of kids and grandkids every few weeks to go down the river (or clear ditch if the river was dry). Nita loved getting together with family and friends and was always planning something. Favorite activities often included everyone gathered around the piano singing while she played, or playing word and card games. She's probably best known for her silly and funny notes to people - she was a prolific writer of notes and fun poetry and communicated with many people. She worked at Sandia National Labs after her children were grown, usually taking classes during her lunch hours and she retired in 1986.
